London's Metropolitan Police Service | New Scotland Yard
About us
The Metropolitan Police Service is famed around the world and has a unique place in the history of policing. Our headquarters at New Scotland Yard - and its iconic revolving sign - has provided the backdrop to some of the most high profile and complex law enforcement investigations the world has ever seen. Founded by Sir Robert Peel in 1829, the original establishment of 1,000 officers policed a seven-mile radius from Charing Cross and a population of less than 2 million. Today, The Met employs 32,000 officers together with specialist support staff and more than 2,500 volunteer police officers in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary. As well as policing London’s 620 square miles and 8.9million population, The Met has national responsibility for a variety of specialist policing units and hosts the UK’s Counter Terrorism Policing HQ. The Met is one of the largest employers in London and with a broad range of roles, from neighbourhoods to firearms. We’re recruiting people who want to make a difference, to help people and begin a career in a brilliant organisation, performing an exciting and extremely rewarding role. Today, now more than ever, is the time to join the Met. www.met.police.uk/careers

Officers tackling armed criminals, running into burning buildings and saving people's lives - we are sharing just a few of the many daily examples of officers "just doing their job" in 2024. Reflecting on a year of unwavering courage, where most officers would say they were just doing what anyone else would do, but these are in fact amazing, incredible feats of selfless courage and commitment to keeping the public safe. 👮 Earlier this year, PC Dan Burdett was on his way into work when he gave emergency first aid to a severely injured man who had been hit by a train. While the man sadly passed away, his intervention meant his family were able to say their final goodbye to their loved one. 🚓 In October, two unarmed police officers were praised for apprehending a violent suspect who attempted to murder two members of the public. PCs Aaron Prayter and Alfie Challis's body worn video showed them entering a nearby shop where they found the suspect on the floor with his hands around the shopkeeper's neck. They managed to distract the suspect enough so he let go of his victim and fortunately both survived - in no small part due to the actions of these officers. 🚨 In November, Inspectors Steph Day and Patrick Allen were commended for their heroism after they improvised using a belt as a tourniquet on a woman whose legs were trapped under a lorry. They stayed with her until the ambulance arrived and, following numerous surgeries, she was able to keep both legs - a large part of that was thanks to these two officers. 🚴 Back in May, PCs Welch, Monaghan and Burn spotted a phone snatcher in Tottenham. The team were able to block the offender and arrest him, but not before recovering four stolen phones and a large kitchen knife. 🐕 In April, PC Colin Chappell and PC Dave Asquith, along with their loyal partners, Police Dogs Remus and Sherpa, received a prestigious award following their response to a firearms incident in Croydon. 📱 In Kingston, PCs Lorraine and John's quick thinking saved the life of someone having a cardiac arrest in a nearby office building. They received an alert via GoodSAM app and jumped into action after grabbing the station's defibrillator. The woman is recovering well and her family expressed their gratitude to the officers who helped save her life. 🧯 Two firearms officers were commended after they tackled an armed suspect who was brandishing a gun randomly at passers-by. Arriving on the scene, they were notified that the man had set fire to his family home prior to making his way on to the street. They could see the fire as they approached so they swiftly detained the man, recovered the firearm and one of the officers started to evacuate members of the public to ensure no one was injured. These examples prove that bravery isn't just part of their job - it's who they are 💙 To be continued in 2025….

Congratulations to the Met Police Officers and staff recognised in His Majesty the King’s New Year Honours. The recipients come from across all ranks of the organisation and show the massive positive impact that policing has on public life and the diversity of the work we do. Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley reflected on the achievements: "In this year’s list we see operational excellence recognised in solving murders, frontline incident management and leadership on issues of national importance – alongside supporting colleagues such as those with PTSD or leading crime prevention efforts with young people." "I am privileged to work with such excellent people and the Metropolitan Police is lucky to have them.” A huge congratulations to them all. https://lnkd.in/emyrx5Qt

Officers overpowered a man moments after he carried out a knife attack On 4 December 2023, a man forced his way into a victim's flat before stabbing her and her mother multiple times. Thankfully, neighbours heard their screams for help and called police. On their arrival, the knife-wielding man was attempting to flee but was confronted by officers as they exited the lift. Covered in blood and still armed with a knife, the brave officers used incapacitant spray when he refused to drop the weapon and then a Taser when he started to stab himself. The officers managed to overpower and disarm him before treating his wounds. He later admitted to attempted murder, grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a knife and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Young voices are not just the leaders of tomorrow – they're the changemakers of today. We are pleased to have partnered with VotesforSchools to host the Youth Summit for over 300 students across London. This was a fantastic opportunity that empowered young people to engage in important dialogue around misogyny and tackling Violence Against Women and Girls, learn to stay safe and build their confidence to speak out. We would like to extend our gratitude to Kate Harris from VotesforSchools for facilitating such an impactful, youth-led discussion. A special thank you to our former detective, Ciara Isabel from The Real Project for sharing her powerful story and equipping the next generation with vital resources. #youngpeople #education #support

Eight thieves that choreographed thefts of jewellery and cash totalling more than £1million have been thwarted by a specialist police investigation, and now face more than 40 years in prison. A highly organised group of pickpockets used distraction techniques and sleight of hand to target victims and businesses in London and across the UK. Working with partners SaferCash and SaferGems to help connect the crimes, the Met’s Flying Squad coordinated a national investigation ensuring the thieves were identified, arrested and convicted.

Two heroic police officers rushed into a blazing building to save residents trapped inside. Last Friday, the officers were waiting in traffic when they noticed smoke billowing out of a building on High Road in Willesden. Without a second thought, they left their car and ran into the fire. The building was full of thick, choking smoke but that did not stop them. They rescued several people trapped inside with the help of members of the public. Both officers required medical treatment as a result of their selfless actions. Running towards danger without hesitation to help those in need takes incredible courage, reflecting the very best of policing.

Officers surprise 11-year-old boy on his birthday Giulio, who is autistic and non-verbal, was celebrating his 11th birthday when officers gifted him with the chance of being a police officer for the day. His mum had previously told them that Giulio was a big fan of police officers and their cars, so they wanted to put the icing on the cake and make his birthday unforgettable. This special gift meant that Giulio got to sit in a police car, put the lights and sirens on and also try out some of the kit. "His smile said it all"
