De-icing cover from Jet Members. If you have used private aviation previously, you may be aware in the cold winter months aircraft on occasion may require de-icing, to some degree, prior to departure.   As the quantity of de-icing needed is dependant on the weather, aircraft size and airport service fees, there isn’t a simple answer as to how much this can cost. Most other charter companies and brokerages will state under a typical charter agreement, that the cost of de-icing is your responsibility, so it is important to be protected. It can also take potentially many months after the trip has been completed for these costs to be recharged back to you, leaving you quite literally out in the cold. To alleviate these concerns, Jet Members can protect members from these unexpected and unwelcome costs with our Jet Members De-icing Protection Program (JMDP). UK banking laws – the new 4-day hold on suspicious payments – a problem to consider for the air charter industry? Is there any way to protect yourself from these troubles that may lie ahead? Obviously, if you plan trips well in advance, but even bookings made over the weekend could extend this hold from 4 to 6 days, you could still face this issue. So is there a simple fix, and what about short-notice trips? You could request credit or make a credit card payment – but this will involve credit checks and likely a charge for convenience, especially with the high interest rates. You could give additional warning to the bank of the planned payment; whether they take the advisory may still, however, remain out of your control. Investigating a pre-paid account may be a better fix — provided funds are available on your account, therefore bookings can be made within a shorter timeframe, or even just hours before without concerns of delays from the bank – it also empowers your position when negotiating with the airline(s). With the growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI), is using a traditional broker / travel consultant regarded as a helpful tool or just another mouth to feed for an already premium service product? You decide. Is a broker service worth it? Are people still prepared to call a broker to find out when they can search out possible airlines directly? Clients naturally want to know if / what broker's fees may be for a service; some may add their fee to the charter price or receive a commission from the operator. Understandably, you want to mitigate these fees to be as low as possible without effecting the product being provided. A broker must demonstrate their commercial value to the client through market knowledge, airline negotiation, or ancillary protections. Sadly, true value is only seen when situations unfortunately go awry with the airline or aircraft, and / or the client needs difficult trip amendments. Broker fees also don’t necessarily mean you are paying above the market price; relationships developed over years of flying give better buying power. Somebody placing 30, 40, 90 flights with an operator is naturally in a better position who will only use them once. A broker is there to provide the client with the best option and the best rate, so an early conversation may identify ways of reducing the costs, whether this be the choice of airport, number of passengers, or even the time of departure. Speaking with airlines directly may not give you a truly unbiased opinion or range of offers.
