🗑️ JUNK FEES 🤬 Many years ago legislation was passed that airlines cannot advertise airfare without including all the tax and fuel charges. Airlines used to advertise $20 tickets to London but when you went thru the checkout process the total with tax and fuel was $500+. Finally these same rules are being legislated for Hotels. (Cars next?) Too often you lookup a hotel online or see an ad and it says $215 per night but when you get to the checkout page its $253.31. Taxes and resort fees often come out to 20% or more of the total advertised price. In your business, are your prices transparent or do you have what the legislators are calling JUNK FEES (not my words)??? #hotels #legislationupdates #travelindustry #junkfees #corporatetravel

Americans aren’t getting sick of European vacations, and airlines are on the hunt for new places to take them. Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines set their flying plans for next summer, with more flights to key #travel destinations on the continent while also introducing flights to locales not previously served, such as Nuuk, Greenland, and Catania, Sicily. “The savvy traveler has been to Paris, Rome and Madrid. They’re looking for something different,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances. The number of Americans who flew to Europe is up 9% this year through September compared with last year, and 16% above the same period in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic brought cross-border travel to a standstill, according to data from the International Trade Administration. The pent-up appetite to travel abroad that was unleashed after the Covid-19 pandemic hasn’t dropped off. Robust travel to Europe has helped fuel profits for large U.S. carriers over the past two summers. 🔗 Read more from Alison Sider and Roshan Fernandez: https://lnkd.in/eRc8uk4p

🛫 Starting May 2024, flight tickets from German airports are set to become pricier due to an increase in the Luftverkehrsabgabe tax. This adjustment is part of the German government’s efforts to cover a significant budget shortfall. Under the new law, air travelers within Germany or to other EU states will see the ticket tax rise from 12,73 Euros s to 15,53 Euros. 😳 For longer flights exceeding 6,000 kilometers, the tax will jump from 58,06 Euros to 70,83 Euros per ticket. While these taxes are initially absorbed by airlines, the costs will inevitably be passed on to passengers. Given these upcoming changes, it might be prudent to consider more sustainable travel alternatives, like train travel—provided there are no strikes. 🙄 #airtravel #germany #priceincrease

Interesting concept with Turkish Airlines. They let you hold the price of cash airfare with a set amount of miles/points, to give you time to decide. If you proceed to buy the cash airfare, the miles are refunded. If you decide not to buy the cash airfare, the miles are kept by Turkish. The Supreme Court of Canada's October 2024 decision affirmed the Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) as compatible with the Montreal Convention of 1999, emphasizing their complementary objectives. Justice Malcolm Rowe noted that the Convention provides a baseline for passenger rights, allowing national laws like the APPR to offer broader protections. The ruling aligns with Sturgeon v. Condor Flugdienst GmbH (CJEU, C-402/07, C-432/07), where the EU's Regulation 261/2004 was upheld as providing enhanced consumer rights without conflicting with the Montreal Convention. Similarly, the UK Supreme Court in Jet2.com v. Huzar [2014] confirmed that technical faults within airlines' control necessitate compensation under EU law. In contrast, jurisdictions like the United States take a narrower approach. The U.S. Department of Transportation focuses on refunds and transparency rather than standardized compensation, adhering strictly to the Montreal Convention’s individualized compensation framework. For example, in King v. American Airlines, Inc. (2018), U.S. courts required demonstrable damages for claims under the Convention. This divergence highlights the varied global interpretations of passenger rights, with Canada’s approach more aligned with European principles of robust consumer protections. The Canadian decision underscores a trend toward balancing passenger welfare with international treaty obligations. By rejecting airline claims of operational burden, the Court echoed sentiments from IATA v. European Parliament and Council (C-344/04), where the CJEU prioritized consumer rights over industry costs. Canada’s leadership in harmonizing national and international frameworks could influence countries like Australia, which lacks comprehensive passenger rights protections. This judgment reinforces global momentum for expanding passenger entitlements while respecting international legal norms.

What self serving guff… Ryanair's persistent complaints about Dublin Airport's passenger caps and charges seem to mask larger issues. The airline's focus on profit-driven expansion contributes to excessive tourism and environmental degradation. Despite its claims of environmental leadership, Ryanair remains Europe's top polluting airline, with emissions equivalent to seven million petrol cars annually Instead of addressing airport charges, Ryanair might better serve its customers by improving its poor complaints record. It’s rudeness and dirty aircraft. It’s a virtual monopoly contributing to price gouging for a landlocked nation. It does Ireland no favours. The lack of critical press in Ireland and general backlash is surprising, given Ryanair's environmental impact and customer service issues, which deserve more balance and scrutiny
