An international open-access journal publishing high quality original research on social pedagogy.
About us
Published by UCL Press (University College London, UK), the International Journal of Social Pedagogy is a fully peer-reviewed, free to read and free to publish within, Open Access Journal. Since its inception in 2012, originally to support the evolution of social pedagogy in the UK, The International Journal of Social Pedagogy has proven to be an important platform for dialogue, that contributes to social pedagogy as an evolving interdisciplinary field around the globe. Articles in the journal reflect the cross-cultural perspectives of a wide range of social pedagogical traditions and provide a deepening disciplinary understanding of social pedagogy itself. Social pedagogy is a long-standing discipline, field of research, and practice area in various countries and is fast becoming better known in others. It offers an integrative and coherent ethical framework for supporting learning, well-being, and social inclusion, through both relationship-centred practice, as well as critical perspectives on structural efforts to address social inequality and promote social justice. Social pedagogy engages with concepts such as 'human flourishing' and 'meaningful belonging' to achieve social change for individuals and communities. The journal promotes a continuous rethinking of educational and human rights centred responses to complex social issues. We encourage rigorous original contributions about Theory and Research in social pedagogy, as well as Review Papers, Practice Papers, and Opinion Pieces that reflect social pedagogical perspectives and challenges. Great new publication by Dr Katrin Bain, one of our editorial board members.
The book is out! The result of 20 years of exploring how parents are represented in policy, organisation and frontline social work practice in England; 20 years of feeling strongly that parents need to be repositioned within the child protection process; 20 years of discussing these ideas with John and developing them into what is now the book. And as it happens it gets published just as the government has re-discovered "working in partnership with parents" in the current edition of Working Together to Safeguarding Children after 20 years of parents being largely invisible. Let's take this as the springboard to talk about the chances, limitations and complexities of working with and meanigfully involving parents in the child protection process to ensure as many children as possible can live safely at home!

💫💫💫 CALL FOR PAPERS - TOWARDS AN ECO-SOCIAL PEDAGOGY 💫💫💫 We've already received a fantastic 23 abstracts to our forthcoming special issue 'Towards an Eco-Social Pedagogy', and there are still a few days left until the extended deadline. 💫💫💫NEW CALL FOR PAPERS - SPECIAL ISSUE💫💫💫 TOWARDS AN ECO-SOCIAL PEDAGOGY We're delighted to invite contributions to our new special issue, guest edited by Prof Arto O Salonen (University of Eastern Finland), Dr Katrin Bain (London Metropolitan University), Gabriel Eichsteller (South East Technological University) & Robyn Kemp (Social Pedagogy Professional Association). As one of the most urgent crises affecting societies across the globe, the climate emergency requires all human professions to critically consider how they can meaningfully integrate an environmentally conscious perspective in their practice. With climate change disproportionately affecting individuals and communities who are already disadvantaged, we argue that any serious attempts to address social inequality must require approaches that encompass a holistic view of the well-being of the entire planet. This raises the question what an eco-social pedagogy might look like and how it can become a key feature in mainstream discourse and practice. We are inviting authors to publish academic and practice papers as part of a special issue offering contributions that can help develop an eco-social pedagogy. ⏲ Expressions of interest accepted until: 15th July 2024 ⏲ Deadline for draft papers: 31st December 2024 👇 Please find the full call for papers here: https://lnkd.in/eSZjup4W The International Journal of Social Pedagogy is a peer-reviewed, open-access diamond journal (meaning there are no publication charges for authors or fees to read the journal), publishing articles on social pedagogy in the broadest sense. #SocialPedagogy #SocialEducation #SocialWork #SocialCare #ecosocialjustice #climatechange #planetarypedagogy #IJSP UCL Press - ThemPra Social Pedagogy CIC - Social Pedagogy Professional Association - Global Alliance for Social Pedagogy and Social Education - International Federation of Social Workers - Claire Cameron - Robyn Kemp - Ian Caswell - Katrin Bain - Gert Biesta - Lieve Bradt - Eldar Ćerim - Lowis Charfe - Mette Christiansen, - Yvalia Febrer - Kiaras Gharabaghi - Jameel Hadi - Juha Hämäläinen - Kieron Hatton - Kevin Jones - Lotte Junker Harbo - Iro Mylonakou Keke - Alia Pike - Karen Prins - Niels Jensen - Adrian Schoone - Daniel Schugurensky - Xavier Úcar - Karla Villaseñor - Evelyn Vrouwenfelder - Howard Williamson - Maria Helena Zamora

🎇NEW OPEN-ACCESS PUBLICATION🎇 Book review: Generation Z in the virtual environment: Competencies and risks, by Miriam Niklová, Mário Dulovics and Jana Stehlíková By Milada Kovalíková Abstract Schools play a pivotal role in cultivating a sense of security, care and community belonging to all students. The schools most successful in academic performance and student well-being, emphasise the importance of relationships. By fostering an understanding and nurturing environment, teachers ensure that students feel valued, improving their life prospects and preparing them to build meaningful, compassionate relationships into adulthood. Generation Z in the virtual environment is based on a research project on the impact of electronic media on the behaviour and development of cross-cutting competencies of Generation Z. The monograph explores the digital lives of this cohort and features both the empowering aspects and the risks posed by digital technology. Despite the valuable insights into Generation Z’s engagement with digital environments, I continue to have a questioning attitude towards the commercialisation associated with generational labels. My own observations in educational settings suggest that the wide range and complexity of individual experiences often go beyond these broad categorisations, highlighting the need for a more subtle comprehension of digital interactions across different age groups. ➡️read the book review here (free access): https://lnkd.in/eZEg6D7M ➡️read the book here (free access): https://lnkd.in/eQ96Njqi The International Journal of Social Pedagogy is a peer-reviewed, open-access diamond journal (meaning there are no publication charges for authors or fees to read the journal), publishing articles on social pedagogy in the broadest sense. 🎇NEW OPEN-ACCESS PUBLICATION🎇 Who and what belongs to us? Towards a comprehensive concept of inclusion and planetary citizenship Arto O Salonen, Anna-Maria Isola, JP Jakonen, Raisa Foster ➡️read the paper here (free access): https://lnkd.in/dawWfjEZ Abstract In this theoretical article, we ask who and what belongs to us. We aim to conceptualise planetary citizenship and identify the scale for experiences of planetary inclusion. As a basis for the planetary approach, we utilise systems thinking and eudaimonic well-being that transcends hedonism and materialism and that focuses on meaningful and purposeful living, personal growth, engagement and positive relationships. Expanding the concept of human participation is necessary as the contemporary lifeworld has gradually stretched beyond the traditional boundaries of local communities and nation-state societies. Furthermore, the lifestyle of people living in high-income industrial countries has also been noted to have serious consequences in wider circles of life. Thus, human–biosphere relationships must be renegotiated to strengthen responsible citizenship and facilitate caring for life on Earth. To promote this ideal, we widen the already validated scale for experiences of social inclusion towards a scale for experiences of planetary inclusion. We introduce the concept of planetary citizenship, which enhances the concept of inclusion. Planetary citizenship refers to a life orientation where the boundary between humans and the rest of nature disappears. It refers to the citizen who is simultaneously a local, global and planetary actor. The attachment to something larger could help planetary citizens grow towards being a person who is aware and reflective and can look at the world from new perspectives. Experiences of planetary inclusion could also help to solve the problems of climate change, depletion of natural resources and biodiversity loss.
