About us
Civil engineers have been shaping our cities for centuries, creating the new and maintaining the old. The Institution of Civil Engineers represents approximately 97,000 civil engineers across the globe, with ICE South West supporting the 6,000 members who live or work within South West England. Our regional members help to create the structures and systems that sustain the South West. They are responsible for designing, building, maintaining and improving bridges, roads, canals, docks, office buildings, hospitals, schools, airports, power stations, railways, flood defences, water-treatment facilities... everywhere. We help to make sure that the high standards needed to become a professional civil engineer are met. Professionals who are awarded membership of our Institution are among the best in the world, and we have a dedicated membership team available to support civil engineers within the South West.

Richard Lang explains why his diagnosis inspired him to set up the ICE South West Neurodiversity Network. Did you know an estimated 14-20% of people in the UK are neurodiverse, with even higher rates within STEM professions. In his blog for the ICE website, Richard discusses the challenges a neurodiverse engineers can face at work and the many strengths they contribute. 📖 Read it now: https://buff.ly/4fnwGNq The ICE South West Neurodiversity Network seeks to: 🔵 support neurodivergent civil engineers; 🔵 foster a supportive and understanding community; 🔵 shape policy by representing neurodivergent interests at the regional committee; and 🔵 raise awareness of neurodivergent concerns across the industry. You can GET INVOLVED by volunteering to help run the new network. Please email ice.southwest@ice.org.uk to put you name forward. #CivilEngineering #Neurodiversity

Today I handed over my role as chair of the ICE Early Careers Network Bristol & Bath in our final meeting of 2024! Taking on this role over the past year has been a challenge, with this level of organisation and responsibility being uncharted territory for me! However, I have hugely enjoyed leading the organisation and delivery of a range of events: from technical lectures to site visits and networking sessions (some highlights pictured below). It's been great to meet a wide network of passionate civil engineering students, apprentices and graduates, as well as the dedicated group of people working and volunteering in other groups across the ICE South West. We also grew our STEM Outreach work this year, with our dedicated team creating new content and delivering online workshops to school students across the country. I would like to thank everyone on the committee over the past year, as well as those who supported me with their advice in this role: Lidia Pearce, Yasemin Gurbuz, Annie Hayton, Miranda Housden FRSA, Sally Walters, Adam O'Brien, Miyu Kudo, Rachel H., Meg Ginsberg, Alex Buley CEng MICE, Jasper Chun. Thanks also to every speaker and company who supported one of our events - they would not be possible without you! I hand over to the capable hands of Alex Browne, while I remain on the committee as communication officer. I'm excited to see what 2025 brings for the committee!

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to Tom Pucknell, William Harwood, Anna Furmaniak, Sam Bartle, George Norcott, Teresa Frost and Gary Cutts for all their hard work and support this year as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Truro City Club Committee. I have thoroughly enjoyed my year as Chair of this fabulous committee and as a team we have successfully run 15 events this year, connecting civil engineers working and living in Cornwall and beyond. These events have ranged from Lunch and Learn Webinars (with over 400 people attending), in-person talks and networking events, site visits, workshops and STEM outreach activities. Although I am sad about stepping down as Chair of Truro City Club, I am looking forward to continuing to run and host the monthly Lunch and Learn Webinar series on behalf of ICE South West in 2025, so look out for updates of our upcoming events in January! #ice #civilengineering #Truro #Cornwall #Southwest #STEM #volunteering
