Age UK’s latest report, “You are not alone in feeling lonely”, highlights the urgent need to address loneliness among older people. Their data analysis reveals that 1 in 14 people aged 65+, equivalent to 940,000 individuals, experience loneliness regularly in the UK. Loneliness is a deeply personal experience, with serious consequences for both mental and physical health. Older people face unique risk factors, such as bereavement, reduced mobility, and social isolation, making it essential to understand loneliness within its broader context. The report outlines practical, evidence-based steps to tackle loneliness, demonstrating that while the issue is complex, progress is achievable. However, it’s clear that no single sector can solve this alone. Age UK calls for a ‘whole system’ response, urging collaboration across health, social care, public health, local government, and businesses to better address the loneliness challenge. We couldn’t agree more. Tackling loneliness requires collective action, and it’s only by working together that we can amplify our impact and create a more connected society.
