New record in England for early cancer diagnosis Data for the 13 most common cancers shows nearly 3 in 5 patients being diagnosed at stage one and two. 58.7% of patients diagnosed between Sep 23 and Aug 24 were identified at these early stages, which is a reported 2.7% rise since pre-pandemic levels. Innovative initiatives such as the targeted lunch health checks are playing an effective role in improving early cancer detection figures. Breast and cervical cancer screening participation still not back to pre pandemic levels. An analysis by Cancer Research UK (CRUK), found that 90,000 cancer cases were detected through screening over the last 5 years. However, participation in certain cancer screening programs in England has declined. Notably, cervical screening coverage has decreased steadily over the past decade, from 74.2% in 2013/14 to 68.8% in 2023/24. Breast cancer screening levels have also failed to return back to pre-Covid levels from 64.6% in 2022/23 compared to 71.1% in 2018/19 (CRUK). The analysis further highlights improving access to screening is essential in increasing uptake. Our latest #GPsTalkCancer podcast episode shines a light on some of the common barriers to screening and how primary care can help. Have you read our latest Cancer Key on FIT and rectal bleeding? We provide a handy summary of the guidance and provide key insights to improve your practice. Cancer Research UK (CRUK) latest referral guidelines are also included for you to download. Take a look 👇
Can we use FIT in patients with rectal bleeding? 🧪 A Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) detects small amounts of blood in stool which can be a sign of colorectal cancer. The test is used in bowel cancer screening and as an investigation for patients with signs and symptoms of possible bowel cancer. Evidence from the NICE FIT study has found that FIT is 99.9% effective at ruling out suspected colorectal cancer in patients with rectal bleeding. In 5 minutes we summarise the guidance, and share key insights to support you in your practice with our latest Cancer Key. Find out more 👇 #FIT #NICE #bowelcancer #earlydiagnosis

With our funding, scientists in Cambridge have developed a ground-breaking urine test to detect early signs of lung cancer. 🧪 The test identifies ‘zombie’ cells, which create an environment where cancers can emerge, helping to spot lung cancer early for faster treatment and better outcomes. We’re proud to back this research with a grant of £88,000 at the University of Cambridge. Read more below 👇

Bowel cancer cases amongst young adults are rising faster in England than anywhere else in Europe. A study published in The Lancet Oncology, found cases rising rapidly amongst 25-49 year olds particularly in western nations. England has one of the highest rates of increase, with a 3.6% annual increase. The reasons are not fully understood but lifestyle factors such as diet, obesity, alcohol , smoking and lack of exercise may play a part. While the overall number of cases in young adults is still low, it’s important for primary care professionals to be aware of red flag symptoms and not let age be a barrier to investigating symptoms.
