Enabling early-stage companies to measure and improve their ESG performance.

About us

ESG_VC is a response by the venture capital industry to the urgent social, environmental and economic challenges that are increasingly impacting early-stage businesses. The initiative, which has brought together some of the world’s leading VC firms, with investors spanning the UK, USA and Europe, seeks to give entrepreneurs the tools to progress on their ESG journey. It does this in three ways: a measurement framework for early-stage companies to benchmark their ESG performance; an annual programme of events to provide start-ups with training and best-practice to achieve their ESG goals; and a bank of insights and resources to learn more about ESG.

Today, in partnership with the British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA), we're publishing the most comprehensive benchmarking of ESG performance in start-ups... Over the past six months, we've been working with the team at the BVCA and our partners at Marriott Harrison to compile and analyse data from 587 portfolio companies backed by leading venture capital firms across the UK and Europe. The findings offer a detailed analysis of ESG performance across early-stage companies, and how this performance differs by stage, sector, and geography. Key takeaways from this year’s report include:   🌳 Over the past year, the proportion of start-ups measuring their carbon footprint has almost doubled… 🗒️ Start-ups are investing heavily in people, talent and training, with 57% now offering study support to staff and 47% offering internships, apprenticeships or trainee programmes… 🤖 Responsible use of AI is an increasing focus for start-ups – 31% now offer training or codes of conduct on the topic – but is this keeping pace with the boom in generative AI?   For more of these insights, check out the full report via the link below! Thank you also to all of our contributors: Act Venture Capital, Astanor Ventures, Atempo Growth, Atomico, Beringea, Cambridge Innovation Capital, Clarendon Fund Managers, DeepTechXL, Fidelity International Strategic Ventures, Frog Capital, Gresham House Ventures, Highland Europe, IRIS Ventures, Mercia Ventures, Molten Ventures, Nesta, Oxford Science Enterprises, Par Equity, Pembroke VCT, Volution, and YFM Equity Partners. #ESG_VC #sustainability #responsibleinvesting

🌎 BIG NEWS 🌎 Our updated ESG_VC framework has launched!! Each year we refine and evolve the framework, and this year is no different (you can take a look at what's new for 2025 below).👇 First things first, a huge thank you to Henry Philipson for his support and knowledge on getting this over the line, as well as Suzi Gillespie, the British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA), and everyone else who has taken their time to provide feedback and expertise into this year's updates. Who's the framework for? 🤷♀️ Aimed at early-stage companies, the framework is designed to provide an entry to ESG scoring, from Seed to Growth stage, across companies spanning B2B and B2C sectors, resulting in a tangible ESG score and a list of key areas to address to improve ESG performance. So, what's changed for this year in our framework? ⌛ First off, it's shorter - less time for companies spent reporting and more time spent creating value through ESG is our number one objective. 🔗 We've separated out our supply chain metrics to make it easier for companies to spot questions that are material to them. ✍️ We've begun to ask companies to provide evidence wherever they can - ensuring that policies have substance. 📝 A new policy dropdown will help portfolio companies to quickly identify the policies they have - and the ones that they're missing. 👥 We've made some changes to the diversity data that we capture - our members have asked for more data on founder diversity, while we've reduced the breadth of data points captured to ensure we're only asking for data that is material to early-stage companies. 🔥 Burning to know more? Luckily, we put on a webinar yesterday to answer all your questions, which you can find linked in the comments Download the new framework at www.esgvc.co.uk

💥 Yesterday, we launched the revised ESG_VC Measurement Framework for 2025 💥 ESG_VC carries out annual updates to the ESG_VC framework, so that we can respond to feedback from users, keep pace with the evolving regulatory landscape, and align wherever we can with other industry standards such as Invest Europe's reporting template and the ESG Data Convergence Initiative metrics. So, what's changed for this year in our framework? 🔗 We've separated out our supply chain metrics to make it easier for companies to spot questions that are material to them. ✍️ We've begun to ask companies to provide evidence wherever they can - ensuring that policies have substance. 📝 A new policy dropdown will help portfolio companies to quickly identify the policies they have - and the ones that they're missing. 👥 We've made some changes to the diversity data that we capture - our members have asked for more data on founder diversity, while we've reduced the breadth of data points captured to ensure we're only asking for data that is material to early-stage companies. Big shout out to Emily Havers and Henry Philipson for leading on the changes. The British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA) research team will be collecting and aggregating the data - deadline 14th February 2025 - and publishing an updated report in the Summer. For anyone interested in learning more, I've linked our webinar explaining the updates in the comments, along with last year's research report. We're delighted to announcing our first licensing of the ESG_VC Measurement Framework in partnership with Novata. A core part of ESG_VC’s work focuses on benchmarking ESG performance within start-ups – to do this, it developed the ESG_VC Measurement Framework, which is now used by 100s of VC firms globally. ESG_VC’s framework – designed specifically for early-stage companies and VC investors to address the unique needs and challenges that they will face when thinking about ESG – will now be available in Novata’s platform to help startups measure the metrics that matter. #ESG_VC #sustainability #data

An exciting day for ESG_VC as we announce the first licensing of our measurement framework in partnership with Novata... A crucial part of supporting portfolio companies on ESG is providing them with a simple way to collect, manage and analyse data - and data collection platforms increasingly play an integral role in this. In collaboration with the Guy Battle and the team at Social Value Portal - who helped Beringea and ESG_VC's founding members to develop the ESG_VC Measurement Framework - we've designed a licensing programme that will help our members to work effectively with data collection platforms. As a global platform with a growing base of clients spanning venture capital and private equity, Novata is a great partner for launching this programme - thank you to Gence Emek, Elizabeth Meyer, Conor O'Laoire, Katie Stueber, and Allison Green in particular for your feedback and support on this! And look forward to working with you all to deliver lots of value through this partnership! For anyone interested in learning more about this partnership or licensing of the ESG_VC Measurement Framework, then do get in touch! #ESG_VC #sustainability #data

We had a great afternoon yesterday (at least until we picked up our phones and checked the England score...) hosting the ESG_VC community with our friends at Marriott Harrison and Dawn Capital. When Beringea first set out to tackle the issue of ESG within our portfolio companies, Karen and I always set out to be practical above all else. Start-ups (and their investors) lack time and resources, so we must get straight to the nub of what's critical for them to know, and how to improve. As we subsequently built this community, we've always tried to stay true to this original objective - and that was the focus of yesterday's event for investors in the ESG_VC network. Crafting and communicating an ESG strategy is a challenge for any firm, particularly those without in-house expertise. With the support and insight of David Strong, Dianne Skurray, Daniel Jacob and the Marriott Harrison team, we hosted a quick-fire set of practical discussions about deploying an ESG strategy. Roshni Bandesha of BGF, Grace Savage of Molten Ventures and Beth Adamson of Frog Capital kicked us off by providing the practitioners' perspectives - how do ESG leads think about engaging portfolio companies, involving internal stakeholders, and communicating with LPs? Hannah Gilbert gave us the view from the other side of the table, spotlighting the vital role played by the British Business Bank on this agenda. We closed things off with a view from the media - Debra Sobel hosted a fantastic discussion with Elliot Gulliver-Needham of City AM and Freya Pratty of Sifted that offered an insight into how some of London's leading newsrooms are looking at the ESG agenda today, from the issues of greenwashing and greenhushing to the stories to watch in sustainability and responsible AI. Huge thank you to everyone involved, especially Samuel Jervier and Julie Blane for all of their help with hosting in Dawn's fantastic events space! #ESG_VC #sustainability #ESGstrategy
