Updates

  • Today Leanne is taking front and centre at EPCA, following her recent visit to two Islay distilleries - Bunnahabhain Distillery and Laggan Bay Distillery (in construction). The Herald recently described the Islay whisky industry as “in [a] buoyant mood amid a spate of major investment aimed at capitalising on soaring demand for its distinctive spirits around the world, while attempting to safeguard its long-term sustainability for future generations.” At EPCA we love being a part of this! Leanne was providing CDM Principal Designer Services, alongside giving health and safety advice, although there is no need to be concerned - she also managed to tour some other Islay distilleries when she was there. And yes, of course this was for research purposes, upskilling and growing the EPCA knowledge of the ever growing whisky industry. There’s only one thing we really have left to say- Slàinte Mhath! #whisky #Islay #Scotland #CDM #healthandsafety

  • Oh, have we got a good one for you today! We've been working on a rather fabulous project as CDM Principal Designers - namely the Cowarehousing Community in Islington for Tradestars, a feel-good project that aims to "provide spaces that help makers make". This is the second project we have worked with Tradestars on, and we have been busy using our knowledge and expertise from the get-go on this project. That means we've been supporting them when it comes to building refurbishment surveys, along with CDM-related advice too. As we write this, we are carrying out CDM site audits, ensuring that the project is being undertaken to high health and safety standards. This is a top priority for Tradestars, so we are more than happy to oblige!   Once the Cowarehousing Community launches, this space will provide studios to a range of businesses that are in need of workspaces - think lots of natural sunlight with plenty of windows and the feeling of lots of space thanks to the high ceilings this building will have. Although currently under construction, we can't wait until this project is completed... and we'll keep you posted on how things go right here too.   (For a recent video of how things are going, we suggest you check out the Tradestars LinkedIn Page - or alternatively, just click on the link: https://lnkd.in/eEe_KBrx). #CDMPrincipalDesigners #BuildingProjects #Islington #Cowarehouse Tradestars

  • Today we have not one, but two projects to share with you at Hillington Park.   The first was a survey of three roofs as part of a dilapidations inspection, thankfully we got a break in the weather for this one with great views across the park!   The second was a completion inspection at Jubilee Court, a £1.2m refurbishment of 15,000 sq ft industrial space on behalf of Frasers Property UK. The unit is unrecognisable and is now in near new condition. Works completed by Advanced Building Contractors Ltd.   #projectmanagement #principaldesigner #buildingmanagement #HillingtonPark Julia Cheung-Buchanan Grant Edmondson

  • Summer is here, and we’re being optimistic when it comes to the sun (making an appearance that is)! However we wanted to take a moment to talk about Sun Safety this week - a topic that we feel passionately about here at EPCA. Sun Safety is a topic that is not given enough focus here in Scotland, however it is very relevant all joking aside. As much as we all love a spot of sunbathing, skin cancer accounts for 1 in 3 cancers that are diagnosed, with 2-3 million non-melanoma and 132,000 melanoma skin cancers occurring each year (these are global figures). Even when it’s cloudy, UV rays can still pass through cloud cover, meaning solar radiation can still be a threat. The good news is that deaths from skin cancer can be prevented via UV exposure control, by up to 90%. When it comes to site visits, we recommend ensuring you have some sunscreen in your car at all times. Then you can easily apply before your visit. We also advise wearing long sleeves where possible to help protect your arms from solar radiation when you’re out and about on a site. Sun Safety - Simple! #sunsafety #summer Leanne M.

  • The secret’s out - we’ve been working on a major new build development! This project is being carried out by Aaron Drysdale - and you can see a photo of Aaron in action below. EPCA have been providing snagging inspections, using the latest in project communication software such as Oracle Acconex. This then allows us to ensure we can efficiently manage the task(s) at hand, and eventually resolve any issues previously identified. These inspections are being carried out each week to the highest of standards - as you’ve come to know and expect from us here at EPCA. #EPCA #projectmanagement #newbuild #buildingsurveyor

  • This week we bring you news about Katie Dunbar, our Associate Director, and now the new RICS Regional Chair for Matrics Scotland. Katie has been involved in Matrics for several years, holding the title of Local Chair for the Glasgow Committee for the past 3 years. In this role, she has been involved in driving Matrics forward, which includes being a front runner on almost 30 Matrics Committees up and down the UK. We managed to catch up with Katie to see what she had to say about her new role. “I’ve been a part of Matrics Glasgow for a long time now and it’s something I feel very passionate about. Seeing how Matrics can benefit those entering the profession through CPD, APC Guidance and Social Events is hugely rewarding and it feels great to be able to give something back. I first joined Matrics back in 2018, and have Leanne McDermott to thank for pushing me to attend and for encouraging me to take on the Local Chair position back in 2018. Matrics has given me an excellent platform to meet new people across the industry and establish new contacts and indeed friendships with people that I would have not otherwise crossed paths with." Katie also told us about who she will be taking over from - Stuart Scott, who has held the position of Regional Chair over the last 3 years. She told us "He has been a fantastic support mechanism for me and the Edinburgh & Aberdeen Committees so I would really like to thank him for that. I am looking forward to continuing the momentum with our new local chairs across the three regions and keeping Matrics a priority for RICS. As a non-executive board member for the RICS Scotland Board, I have an excellent opportunity to make sure that people in the early stages of their career have a voice within the wider RICS.” Congratulations Katie, we can't wait to see what your Matrics future holds!
