Project Weather Risk and Schedule Management

💨☔ Weather Risk in Construction: Are Speed and Cost Always the Best Strategy? In the construction industry, it’s no secret that clients often prioritize the fastest and cheapest programmes to get projects completed. On paper, it makes sense—time is money, and budgets are tight. But is this focus on speed and cost setting projects up for greater risks down the line? One factor that’s often underestimated in these plans is weather risk. - A sudden storm can halt progress. - High winds can render cranes unusable. - Heavy rainfall can turn excavation sites into lakes. These delays aren’t just inconvenient—they can ripple across the entire project, causing escalating costs, safety concerns, and missed deadlines. What’s interesting is that some forward-thinking companies are starting to shift the narrative. Instead of focusing solely on the cheapest and fastest options, they’re integrating weather risk management into their planning. They’re asking: - What’s the cost of not accounting for weather impacts upfront? - How can better forecasting and risk mitigation strategies actually save time and money in the long run? - Is it time to rethink the balance between cost, speed, and resilience? Every day I speak to contractors and clients, and the subtle changes in perception on weather are promising. More people are starting to recognize that weather isn't just an uncontrollable factor but a risk that can be managed with the right approach. It’s encouraging to see conversations shifting from reactive measures to proactive planning. But with so many projects still driven by the cheapest and fastest programmes, it begs to ask the question if this culture shift is something the industry is truly ready to embrace—or if it will take more costly lessons to fully change the mindset?

CEO @EHAB ⛈️ Helping construction companies tackle weather risk with data & science. Avoid risk, save money.

It's tough being a startup. You have a vision for the world that you can see so clearly, and early on you get a lot of confused faces. Often people in construction might defend the current process, "we've always done it like this... so it must be working right?" Even though, 10 seconds later you ask "what is the current method for analysing weather today?" "Gut-feel, yeah not science based at all..." BUT! This is not a post about people still coming to terms with the fact that they could be doing things wrong. This is a post about a partnership. Our oldest partnership. Going all the way back to when we started this journey in 2020. BAM UK & Ireland are the construction company who said gut-feel isn't good enough, lets work together and create a new approach. Its radically different, but it's not really radical. Use science, data, analysis, to make better decisions that ultimately save time and money. Not radical, obvious. We are approaching 5 years of working with BAM and this blog post was written to describe all the hurdles we've overcome and the new climate resilient industry we are helping to forge. An enourmous thank you to Chris McGinness IEng MICE and Sharon Oswald for being constant testers and champions. Thank you to Julian Garwood for getting the momentum going. Thank you to Colin Evison for 100s of conversations and intros, especially in the early days. Thank you to Ivor Barbrook for continuing to see our vision. Thank you to so many others, Andy Johnson (the dragons den pitch!), Jo Burns (the talks, and smart contract testing!), Arjun Thiru, Harrison O'Hara, Dr George M Evans, Imran Ullah, Calum Van Nuil, Simon Whalley, Paul Burnside, Neil Parker, Alison Powell FCInstCES, David Milnes, Heidi Simpson, Neil Irving, Kapil Gandhi, Michael Coulson, Graham Kirkby, Gaelle Bardsley, Philippa Jefferis, Neil Openshaw, Bob Djordjic, Ben Mullard, Muhammad Atif Shamsi. Probably so many others too... #construction #civilengineering #innovation #startups #partnership

Assessing weather risk, how do you do it? Most people in #construction seem to rely on 'gut-feel' - but.... This does not work and we all know it!!! So, EHAB & Oracle have teamed up to bring you a data driven and science based approach to assessing weather risk. Want to know how? Join our webinar on the 18th of September 14.00-15.00 Find out how to pull accurate weather calendars for any location on planet earth into your schedule or QSRA. Understand how this can protect against changing weather patterns too! I'll be joined by Dave Hammal who will help demonstrate this new and powerful integration. CEO @EHAB ⛈️ Helping construction companies tackle weather risk with data & science. Avoid risk, save money.

I recently did an experiment... I spoke with 25 construction experts about the weather. This is what they had to say: 1. Biggest Issue Caused by Weather - Delays in Construction (61%): The most frequently cited issue was weather-induced delays in construction projects, particularly due to rain, wind, and extreme temperatures. - Damage to Works (22%): Another significant concern was damage to completed or ongoing work due to weather conditions like flooding or extreme winds. - Productivity Loss (17%): Some respondents highlighted that weather directly reduces construction productivity, which in turn affects project timelines and costs. 2. Is Weather a Cost Problem, a Time Problem, or Both? - Both (89%): Nearly all respondents agreed that weather is both a time and cost problem, often intertwined. Delays caused by weather directly translate into increased costs, whether through extended project timelines, damaged materials, or increased labor costs. - Time Only (11%): A smaller portion mentioned time as the primary concern, with cost being a secondary effect. 3. Suggested Solutions - Better Weather Forecasting and Planning (38%): A significant number of respondents suggested using more accurate weather forecasting tools and incorporating these forecasts into project schedules. - Contingency Planning (28%): Building weather contingencies into project plans, including buffer days and additional resources, was another common solution. - Alternative Construction Methods (22%): Some suggested using off-site construction methods or modern construction technologies to minimize the impact of weather. - No Feasible Solutions (12%): A few respondents indicated that, despite best efforts, weather issues are largely unavoidable and must be accepted as part of the risk in construction projects. What’s your take? How do you tackle weather-related challenges in your projects? 💬 Let me know in the comments! #Construction #ProjectManagement #WeatherRisks #Innovation #RiskManagement
