The National Youth Theatre(NYT) has been announced as a 2025 CIVIC TRUST AWARDS and 2025 Selwyn Goldsmith Awards for Universal Design: Regional Finalist. NYT is deservedly recognised as a community asset in Islington and has promoted a sense of belonging to the many participants who have accessed its Youth Arts programmes over the last sixty years. We are super proud to see NYT get the recognition it deserves, and especially so for the Selwyn Goldsmith Awards, as DSDHA's retrofit was driven in large part by considered engagement with current users, and supported by accessibility consultants, to ensure it became a diverse space, usable by many. Last Friday, we felt especially thankful to be hosted at NYT for DSDHA’s Christmas Party. We saw talented performers take to the stage for a production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and enjoyed a communal meal put together by Syrian Sunflower Kitchen. The Civic Trust Awards encourage the best in architecture and environmental design, to improve the built environment for us all through design, sustainability, inclusiveness and accessibility, and also to reward projects that offer a positive cultural, social, economic or environmental benefit to their local communities. The Selwyn Goldsmith Awards for Universal Design celebrate places that are responsive, flexible, welcoming, easy to use and occupy, allowing all to use with dignity and equality. #SpatialJustice #InclusionInDesign #CulturalInfrastructure

The City is our Client. Architecture, landscape, urban design and spatial research. Based in London.
About us
We are an architecture, urban design and spatial research studio. More than bricks and mortar, our projects are about people. Our work spans from crafting beautiful and sustainable buildings, welcoming landscapes and whole new neighbourhoods, through to writing the brief that will shape how a space might be used long into the future. Our aim is to foster positive change in the built environment and to empower communities, creating social value through collaboration and meaningful engagement. Using our intelligence and insight, and by deploying our range of skills to add value and deliver more, we bring projects to life and design them to evolve after completion. Above all, we see beyond boundaries to seek opportunities that bring wider benefits to all. Known for our innovative buildings, high-profile urban strategies and widely-acclaimed research, we have been awarded 19 RIBA Awards, nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award, and also shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize.

We’re pleased that our redeveloped home for young storytellers has been selected as a 2025 CIVIC TRUST AWARDS: Regional Finalist and a 2025 Selwyn Goldsmith Awards for Universal Design: Regional Finalist. These awards recognise how buildings allow all to use them with dignity and equality, putting people at the heart of design. Given the access focus of our redevelopment, it was fitting to hear the news yesterday on International Day of Disabled People. You can support our work to make theatre accessible for all young people and have your donation doubled by giving before 10 December at www.nyt.org.uk/biggive We’re very grateful to the redevelopment team, led by architects DSDHA and our supporters who made this work possible, including: the Mayor of London's Good Growth Fund, The Kirby Laing Foundation, THE LONDON MARATHON CHARITABLE TRUST LIMITED, #TheChristinaSmithCharitableFoundation, City Bridge Trust, Arts Council England, Islington Council & the Green Hall Foundation. Agnieszka Szedzianis, an Associate at DSDHA shares industry frustrations, shared by many, on the role and wages of the Architect in contrast to 1999. ‘The same mid-career architect would be earning today’s equivalent of £67,760 a year, an annual difference of around £19,000, creating an almost 40 per cent shortfall. This is not mere salary stagnation. This is a rapid salary decrease’ Read more on Architects’ Journal https://lnkd.in/esUeWRSw

Following in the footsteps of Denise Scott Brown, Zaha Hadid, Toshiko Mori and Yolande Daniels, in Autumn 2020 Deborah Saunt was appointed Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at the Yale School of Architecture. After production delays caused by numerous lockdowns, we're pleased to be able to finally announce that Yale selected Deborah's Advanced Design Studio, 'What about Learning?', to be produced in book form by the architectural publishers Actar Publishers, and that the book is now available for purchase! With global pandemics, social injustice and the climate emergency posing urgent questions to education and its role in shaping democratic life at large, both what and how we learn are political questions that are mediated through spatial conditions — we challenged our students to take learning outside existing privileged enclaves and consider a twofold architectural question: What is the best site for learning today? What are the alternative forms of learning and exchange it could nurture? A collective analysis of Yale's changing conditions, from its physical site to its virtual presence and networks, and parallel research into alternative learning models, such as The University of the Underground and The London School of Architecture, served as a basis for critique and the making, and unmaking, of curriculum in the students’ projects. With travel restrictions in place across the globe, in place of Yale's usual 'travel week' we hosted an international online symposium that brought together a hugely inspiring range of speakers from different fields — from activism to planning and pedagogy — to share their diverse interests on the subjects of learning as both a spatial practice, and architectural learning in the expanded field Nelly Ben Hayoun- Stépanian Ph.D Lesley Lokko Roberta Marcaccio Sam Jacob Alicia Pivaro Mel Dodd Beatrice Galilee RESOLVE Collective Joel De Mowbray Leroy Street Studio Cohort: Ashton Harrell, Ben Woo Thompson, Claudia Ansorena, Gordon Jiang, Justin Kong, Saba Salekfard, Shuang Chen, Tyler Krebs, Vignewsh Hari Krishnan + Jane Wong, Tim Newton ISBN: 9781638400820 Edited by David Grant, Saba Salekfard and Nina Rappaport https://lnkd.in/exzG3rb5

🥁The moment you've all been waiting for! The Supreme Winner of the 2024 Brick Awards is... Norton Folgate! This project involved redeveloping three urban blocks, to bring life back into unused buildings while respecting the unique character of the historical area. We've partnered Marble Arch London BID and The Church Commissioners for England – Real Estate to set out priorities for public realm improvements along Edgware Road. The Edgware Road placemaking strategy has been produced by DSDHA after the architects and urban designers carried out an extensive review with local residents, businesses, councillors, community partners, schools and faith groups, to find out what they would like their high street to look like. Our Strategic Projects Director Simon Loomes commented: “These plans, which help guide the Edgware Road’s future, are a testament to the power of collaboration and strategic partnerships, which have been pivotal in shaping this shared vision. The Portman Estate, as a key landowner on the east side of Edgware Road, is deeply committed to this initiative. We are dedicated to enhancing the public realm, improving facades, shop fronts, and forecourts, and ensuring that the Edgware Road remains a vibrant, inclusive and dynamic community. This strategy is a significant step towards a shared strategy for a sustainable and welcoming environment in one of London’s much loved cultural centres.” Rosa Han #EdgwareRoad #Placemaking #MarbleArch #Marylebone #ThePortmanEstate
Marble Arch London BID has partnered with The Portman Estate and The Church Commissioners for England – Real Estate to set out priorities for public realm improvements along Edgware Road in the West End. The Edgware Road placemaking strategy has been produced by DSDHA after the architects and urban designers carried out an extensive review with local residents, businesses, councillors, community partners, schools and faith groups, to find out what they would like their high street to look like. Edgware Road forms the central spine that runs the length of the Marble Arch BID area and is bounded by The Portman Estate to the east and The Church Commissioners’ Hyde Park Estate to the west. This new placemaking strategy will help guide future investment towards the long-term protection and enhancement of one of London’s most vibrant and iconic neighbourhoods.
