DIGI2AL recently had the privilege of partnering with DNA (the Royal Navy’s Software House) and UTC Portsmouth to deliver a hackathon. The event was themed around a real-world challenge faced by the Royal Navy: “How can maritime AIS data support sustainability analysis?”. This gave students hands-on problem solving experience using industry-leading practices, tools and data. We were honoured to have Captain McLocklain (Royal Navy), Ben Holloway (Head of DNA), and Roo Reynolds (COO, Digi2al) as judges on the day of the event. They assessed the students’ impressive data-driven solutions, which included optimising shipping routes using ocean currents, designing fuel-efficient vessels, and leveraging weather data to reduce fuel consumption. These solutions not only demonstrated technical proficiency but also embodied the core values of UTC Portsmouth—resilience, creativity, and innovation. A special highlight was the involvement of two members from Digi2al’s graduate scheme, Finn and Sophie. Both joined Digi2al in January and, having learned Palantir Foundry as a completely new platform, were able to provide contextual training to the students. This “full-circle” moment, where they transitioned from learners to mentors, demonstrated Digi2al’s commitment to furthering and developing talent. The success of this event has shown the benefits of collaboration between education and industry. We are incredibly proud of the partnership between Digi2al, DNA, and UTC Portsmouth, and look forward to working with other institutions to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals and showcase the innovation driving the future of Defence.

Over the weekend, DIGI2AL’s Victoria Preston met up with Imy O’Brien (left) – Skipper of 2024 Force Atlantic – to talk about all things data and DIGI2AL and, most importantly, what music the all-female Army rowing team will take with them on their voyage. If you can think of any tracks that might be endlessly re-playable for 40 days rowing to the Caribbean, let us know!

Last weekend, DIGI2AL’s Roo Reynolds and Luke Smith took part in Adaptive Grand Slam group’s AGS Cumbria Challenge – a guided hill walking experience led by mountain leaders in the Lake District. Since 2017, AGS has existed to train and enable disabled adventurers to take on expeditions and challenges, and to inspire others with life-long injuries and disabilities to achieve their goals. Twenty people with different levels of ability all successfully completed the challenge. The group included seven mountain leaders, which allowed the routes to be adapted for different physical abilities. Some took on over 20km of tough hill walking, taking in climbs of some big peaks in the Lake District, including Helvellyn. For some, shorter routes provided an opportunity to take to the hills to gain skills and confidence. DIGI2AL’s participants shared a few words on their experiences: Roo: “For both supporters and beneficiaries alike, the event provided a massively supportive atmosphere, a chance to learn something new and to meet some properly impressive and determined people. I left the weekend not only with sore muscles but also with a renewed sense of determination.” Luke: “It was my first time taking part in such an event, and I was eager to push my limits alongside a supportive and diverse group. Overall, it was an inspiring weekend, impeccably organised and supported, offering both physical and emotional challenges alongside an amazing group of people.”

DIGI2AL are excited to sponsor the first all-female Army team to take on the epic World’s Toughest Row Atlantic. On December 12th 2024, four members of the Force Atlantic team will climb aboard Rosie and set out to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, from La Gomera, Canary Islands to Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua.    Their endeavour is inspired by the Army’s ethos of challenge, adventure, teamwork and leadership. It also aligns with Digi2al’s mission to solve digital and data challenges that have humans at the heart. To this end, we are thrilled to be working with Force Atlantic to explore how data can support and optimise the team’s performance and health during the voyage. Look out for more updates over the coming weeks as we count down to the first splash of Rosie’s oars. Force Atlantic
