About us

Crisis is the national charity for people experiencing homelessness. We are committed to ending homelessness. Every day we see the devastating impact homelessness has on people’s lives. Every year we work side by side with thousands of homeless people, to help them rebuild their lives and leave homelessness behind for good. Through our pioneering research into the causes and consequences of homelessness and the solutions to it, we know what it will take to end it. Together with others who share our resolve, we bring our knowledge, experience and determination to campaign for the changes that will solve the homelessness crisis once and for all. We bring together a unique volunteer effort each Christmas, to bring warmth, companionship and vital services to people at one of the hardest times of the year, and offer a starting point out of homelessness. We know that homelessness is not inevitable. We know that together we can end it.

A massive thank you to our partner TDS for holding an amazingly successful bucket collection this week! Over 30 of their staff team volunteered to collect donations from generous members of the public. Across four days, TDS staff were out and about fundraising and raising awareness of homelessness close to their Head Office in Hemel Hempstead. TDS Group work alongside Crisis year-round to help people find homes in the private rented sector, and we’re incredibly grateful that they’ve gone the extra mile for us this festive period. Thanks to TDS and everyone who donated for supporting our mission to help end homelessness.

🐄 Ever wondered what 9,000 litres of milk looked like? We can help you with that! Our long-standing followers will remember The Great Milk Panic of '23. One of the donor companies in London had to drop out at the last minute and we issued a very desperate appeal for milk! To our relief, Arla Foods UK kindly stepped in to help and generously provided all the milk we needed for our Christmas guests. 🐮 And this year, Arla's done it again! But this time they contacted us early and told our London team not to worry about sourcing milk this year. 9,000 litres arrived at our warehouse on Thursday and the Crisis elves snapped this photo before getting it into the fridge (it's a big fridge). A HUGE thank you to everyone at Arla for their kindness and generosity. The first step out of homelessness often starts with a chat over a hot drink. Our guests will all be raising a mug to you in the next few weeks. 🥛 ❤️ ❤️

When Charlotte’s mum passed away, she and her daughter were forced to move out of their shared home because the landlord was selling up. “My life had stalled; I didn’t realise how much I was grieving,” she said. After staying in temporary accommodation and moving from place to place, a broken phone meant she missed a call from the council and so lost the chance of a flat. Her appeal was denied. Then she came to Crisis… Charlotte's story is just one example of how your support can make a real difference this Christmas. You can make this the first day of someone’s life beyond homelessness, if you can please donate now: https://bit.ly/4gGt2PZ

Great news! London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced that the GLA and the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government will be providing £300,000 funding to allow one of our Christmas hotels in London to stay open for an extra fortnight after Christmas. This additional time could be a life saver for some of our guests. Our support teams work with guests in the hotels over the Christmas period to help them to start rebuilding their lives and get out of homelessness for good. Some guests are even able to move straight on into accommodation when the hotels close. An extra four weeks will allow case workers to work with more people, especially those with complex needs, and give them a better start on their journey out of homelessness in the new year. https://bit.ly/3VNmZB1

There’s nothing more special than this feeling ✨ When someone walks through our doors at Christmas, it can be the first day where everything changes. For many of our guests, the support they receive has such an impact that they return as volunteers once they are settled to help others access the help and support they once did. Your support will help someone start their life beyond homelessness. Give now: https://bit.ly/4gIn8xY

Yesterday we welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to our #CrisisAtChristmas warehouse in Canning Town. They came to learn more about the work that we do over Christmas and throughout the year. Most important, they also had an opportunity to talk to some of our members about their own experiences of homelessness. The Government has committed £1 billion to tackle homelessness and our CEO Matt Downie also got to talk to the DPM about this. We need to see investment in solutions that prevent homelessness from happening in the first place, rather than temporary solutions which do little to end homelessness for many households.

Con first came to Crisis at Christmas in December 2015, after months of sofa surfing and sleeping rough. Nine years later, he’s a homeowner, a Crisis volunteer, and has managed a service supporting homeless people and prison leavers. “I was sleeping rough on the streets in London. The most frightening thing was that I was getting used to being homeless. The first time I volunteered at Crisis at Christmas in 2015, I was actually still rough sleeping. That Christmas was pivotal in turning my life around. I felt like this was my family.” With support from Crisis in 2016, Con found housing and work, gaining confidence and independence along the way. From guest to homeowner and service manager, Con’s journey is incredible. Your support makes stories like his possible. This Christmas, help someone take the first step out of homelessness.
