The UK has a new Government, congratulations to the The Labour Party and Sir Keir Starmer. Chemical businesses throughout the UK stand ready to provide much-needed economic, environmental, and social solutions. The new Government must demonstrate that the UK is open for business with an industrial strategy that creates an attractive investment environment and a chemicals strategy that supports the UK's capacity to combat chemical pollution, foster a secure circular economy, nurture the skills of future generations, and ascend as a science superpower. The Chemical Industries Association will continue to work with Government to ensure continued growth in the chemical sector, securing the UK's position as an attractive and competitive destination for investment and job creation. Over 43% of UK chemicals are purchased by other manufacturing sectors making us an essential component in ensuring secure and resilient supply chains. UK chemical businesses not only make a substantial macro-economic contribution in terms of turnover, trade, and the creation of highly skilled and well-rewarded jobs but also underpin much of our critical national infrastructure. Ahead of the publication of the final industrial strategy in spring 2025, the Chemical Industries Association submitted its response to the plans outlined in the green paper. We believe that the Government’s ambitions for economic growth, environmental progress and social inclusion over the next decade will, to a large extent, be realised by key foundation sectors such as the chemical industry. 🏭 We remain committed to working closely with Government and our members to shape a strategy that fully recognises and enhances the role of the chemical sector in the UK. 📄 Read our full submission here: https://lnkd.in/gJK63zaQ #Invest2035 #Innovation #Sustainability #UKGrowth

In a recent feature by the Financial Times the Chemical Industries Association called for the need of urgent action to ease concerns in the chemical sector. Although it contributes a great value to UK economy exporting more than £60bn worth of goods a year - half of which goes to the EU - the sector is being buffeted by energy costs and geopolitical instability. CIA Chief Executive, Steve Elliott, said: “Without decisive action, the risk of further decline is significant, which could have a knock-on effect across the economy”. Responding to Rt Hon Rachel Reeves pre-election comment that ministers would consider unilaterally aligning with EU chemical regulations, Steve also said, “Alignment doesn’t necessarily mean automatic access if the UK is outside of the single market and still needs to prove compliance at the border and therefore does not benefit from levels of friction-free access”. The chemical sector is key to the UK economy, supporting over 500,000 jobs nationwide. In the North West alone, chemical businesses employ more than 27,000 people—and now with Chemical Industries Association member Koura building a new facility in #Runcorn, that number is set to grow! 💼 Their new facility is not only introducing new jobs into the local economy but also helping customers achieve their climate goals. A great example of innovation driving sustainability and growth. #chemicalindustry #netzero #economy
