Research at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute falls under three key themes: Stem Cell States - studying the fundamental biology to understand the mechanisms by which stem cells self-renew, maintain their states, and differentiate to become different cell types. Stem Cells in Disease - investigating the mechanisms responsible for pathological behaviour of stem and progenitor cells. Stem Cells & Therapeutics - modelling diseases and generating new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. With 28 Principal Investigators and 38 Affiliated Principal Investigators, the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute (CSCI) is central to a community of biologists, clinicians, and physical scientists working to better human health through stem cell research.

I was truly touched by what Kirsty co-produced with members of the institute (see attached pdf), because they expressed as their lived reality a Research Culture that I aim to nurture. Of course, promoting positive research culture remains a constant work in progress. To this end, it’s inspiring how Kirsty’s drive and initiative delivered a better articulation of Positive Research Culture than any top down initiatives I have seen.

We're so thrilled for our PI Professor Sarah Teichmann FMedSci FRS and her incredible collaborators at the Human Cell Atlas and researchers from CSCI, Wellcome Sanger Institute and beyond for their incredible achievement this week. With their new bundle of papers out in Nature Portfolio, scientists are working hard to map the human body, offering insights into gut, skeletal, and immune cell development and making great strides into a full cell atlas. Our bodies are made up of 37 trillion cells - and scientists are trying to map what each cell does. The Human Cell Atlas team are cartographers of the human body. More than 3,600 scientists in over 100 countries – on every continent other than Antarctica – are working on what is arguably one of the most ambitious scientific projects ever launched. The project has already revealed important insights into how our bodies work - from how SARS-CoV-2 enters the human body to why the weight-loss jab Ozempic increases your heart rate. Professor Sarah Teichmann FMedSci FRS, who co-leads the project, says: "I'm super proud of how much we've achieved. It’s been mind-blowing, such an exciting journey." Could a gene that helps cancer cells survive be the key to finding new ways to wipe them out? 🗝️ Dr cécile Lopez, from the University of Cambridge, has been awarded one of our 2024 John Goldman Fellowships. She will be investigating the role of the ERG gene in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and how it encourages cancerous cells to grow.
