🗣️A huge thank you to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), Cambridge Cleantech and Innovate UK for hosting last Thursday's Showcase Event for Agrifood Tech. Bringing together some of the best innovators and investors operating in this domain, all in one room! 🇦🇶🐧It marked the culmination of an Ant-arctic (apologies, BAS) and positive week as we celebrated the successful conclusion of our second Innovate UK project at Newcastle University. ⭐️🌱Sustainability Insight: Public and Private Trends of Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technology in the UK🌱⭐️ 💬[Summary] The UK’s #WtE sector is adapting to regulatory and technological shifts, with a key development being the planned 2028 carbon tax on WtE facilities under the UK Emissions Trading Scheme. Additionally, the governments delayed Resources and Waste Strategy reforms, such as Extended Producer Responsibility, aim to increase recycling and reduce waste-to-landfill dependency while complementing WtE. Investment in WtE facilities remains robust due to rising demand for waste management solutions that contribute to the UK’s net-zero goals. 💡[Insight] The #carbon tax represents a significant shift in the UK’s approach to managing WtE emissions, pushing operators towards lower-carbon technologies. Biofuel Evolution’s ‘BEBlock’, already fulfills these lower-carbon needs by providing a #decentralized and tailored-to-scale solution for WtE that minimises #emissions associated with transportation, optimises energy use locally and enables efficient carbon capture and integrated recycling practices effectively. With private investment for #energy projects (including WtE) expected to remain high, firms are increasingly committed to adopting solutions that address both regulatory compliance and #climate #impact concerns. 🌱[Impact] If successful, these initiatives could make #WtE a more sustainable alternative to landfill, helping the UK cut emissions and reach net-zero targets. The carbon tax, combined with the growing adoption of carbon capture and storage (#CCS) technology, is likely to make WtE a more environmentally #sustainable option for managing residual waste. 🗣️[Discussion] The WtE sector’s future in the UK hinges on the effectiveness of carbon capture and recycling policy reforms. Private sector readiness to innovate is promising, but the financial burden of compliance with new regulations may limit smaller centralised operators. Companies like Biofuel Evolution are advancing solutions to manage and monitor waste treatment and energy generation to align with broader UK goals for cleaner, tech driven infrastructure. We are overjoyed and proud to participate in this year's TRUSTxBio: Empowering Trust and Innovation in Biofuels and Bioenergy Challenge!🍃💧 We would like to thank ETIP Bioenergy, Center for the Study of Democracy and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden for the opportunity to join this exciting ecosystem and initiative. Through a series of workshops, the programme will offer the chance to accelerate and develop BEBlock® as well as garner knowledge from industry experts which will help to shape our vision of democratising sustainable energy and resources.

From attending a Cadets Course in 1998, building a rocket out of a 2-litre plastic bottle, at the Observatory Science Centre in Herstmonceux to pitching at the National Space Centre in Leicester for the TBAT Innovation Challenge Final 2024. A transformative two month chapter of learning and living in the UK has officially come to a close. I am so honored to have worked in partnership with the University of Bath and Biofuel Evolution to support their sustainability goals through green chemistry research. I am proud to say my work has generated meaningful results, allowing traditionally discarded food waste to be more effectively fractionated towards renewable fuels. I wanted to take the opportunity to thank: Sanjay Nagarajan, Jaymish Patel, Sarah Grant (+the broader IFS team), Anne Glenn, and Norman Chiu for making this experience possible. An additional thank you to my coworkers/newfound friends Makenzie Wiseman, Maggie Mahanes, Meredith Lehman - Student, Cambria Oldham, Emma Hughes, Ashley Linden, Ella Nolen, and Kimberley Sanabria - it was such a privilege getting to know and work with you all!
