About us

We are a charity which provides specialist compassionate care and support to patients and their families in Barnsley who are living with a progressive, life-limiting illness. Our multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals provide care and support in every way we can and take a holistic approach to help improve quality of life. People with progressive, life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, motor neurone disease and Parkinson's disease can access a range of support services and treatments at the Hospice. These include day therapy, complementary therapy, carers groups, inpatient care and counselling support to help them live the best life they can. We rely heavily on the generosity of individuals and businesses to help us continue our care. Each year we need to raise over £2 million to provide patient services that are free of charge.

  • 2024 has been an extra special year for Barnsley Hospice, marking 30 years since we first opened our doors. This wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our local community, staff, volunteers and everyone who goes above and beyond to ensure our care is available for everyone who needs it. Let’s look back at just some of our 2024 highlights: 👕 At the start of the year, we opened Rotation @ The Hub, a specially curated area of the Barnsley Hospice Retail Hub for all things vintage and designer. 🚶 Over 60 hospice supporters took on our ‘30 for 30 Walk’ and completed 10, 20 or 30 km routes around the borough to raise funds and celebrate our 30th anniversary. ⛏️ The hospice gardens got a makeover to create a new seating area thanks to the generous team at P. Biddlestone Groundworks and Maintenance. 🍽️ Barnsley College hosted an Anniversary Dinner in support of the hospice at The Open Kitchen, with local dignitaries and businesses in attendance. 🏆 We brought home two awards at the Palliative and End of Life Care Awards in June. We also received Highly Commended in THREE other categories! 👟 We were chosen as the official charitable partner of the Barnsley 10K and over 50 incredible supporters completed the challenge in aid of the hospice, raising over £10,000! 🛏️ Two rooms on our Inpatient Unit were renovated thanks to the team from Countrywide Healthcare , funding from the Morrisons Foundation and generous donations from individuals whose families have been supported by the hospice. 🪩 We hosted a 30th Anniversary Ball to celebrate three decades of the hospice. 🌼 Our fantastic team of volunteer gardeners received another GOLD award at the Yorkshire in Bloom competition for all their hard work and effort in keeping the hospice gardens looking amazing. 🍸 The team at Waterton’s Reserve Gin created a limited-edition gin to celebrate our 30th anniversary. The special blend contained 30 unique botanicals - including lemon balm, lavender and mint from the hospice gardens. 🎵 We marked our anniversary and Hospice Care Week with the release of a cover of Lean on Me by local musician Tom Masters and an accompanying video featuring hospice staff, volunteers and service users. We were even lucky enough to premiere the song and video on the big screen thanks to Parkway Cinema Barnsley. 🕯️ Recently, we held our annual Light up a Life services which welcomed hundreds of supporters to the hospice and St Mary’s Church to celebrate the lives of loved ones. There are so many events and people who have helped to make this year so special, that it’s impossible to name them all. Thank you to all our wonderful supporters and volunteers for all your help this year - Barnsley Hospice simply wouldn’t exist without you. 🧡 If you’d like to make a donation and help us continue to be there for local people and their families, please visit our website: https://loom.ly/jgoC89Y

  • 🧡"And that is how I know That when that leaf floats into view It isn't a coincidence, But a sign of love from you" 🧡 Robins have played a big part in our Light Up a Life campaign, as we celebrate and remember loved ones at this time of year. As well as our popular pin badges and Christmas cards, the robin has featured in a beautiful poem, written by Becky Hemsley, which was read out at both of our Light Up a Life services by our patron Dan Jarvis MBE and volunteer Sue Stokes. You can enjoy Sue's reading of 'There's a robin on my fence today' from our service at St Mary's church in this video.

  • 💪 Are you looking for a challenge to take on in 2025? We'll soon be announcing our upcoming events, which you can take on in support of Barnsley Hospice and the specialist care we provide. Keep your eyes on our social media in the new year as we'll share more information about our challenge events and how you can sign up. 🧡

  • As we close in on the end of 2024, we want to look back to the start of the year where Ridley & Hall Solicitors kindly decided to select Barnsley Hospice as their charity partner for the year. Having learned of our 30th anniversary taking place, they set themselves a target of £3,000. Recently we received a cheque for £3,229.97 which is amazing! All of the team took part in various fundraising activities, including a monthly 'Friday social' in town, a Christmas breakfast social, one of our Easter Chocolate Bouquets, runners in the Barnsley 10k and half marathon and of course to finish the year, several members of staff donned their elf hats as part of our famous Elf Run! What's even more amazing is that the staff enjoyed all of the activities so much, they have decided to fundraise again for us in 2025! Thank you so much to the entire team at Ridley & Hall, who really put the 'fun' in fundraising whilst supporting our services. 🧡

  • It has been another amazing year for Barnsley Hospice thanks to our fantastic fundraisers who are vital in ensuring we can be there for the Barnsley community. Throughout our special 30th anniversary year, you have ran, walked, pedalled, sang, baked, golfed, held a coffee morning - and anything in between - to help keep us going. We couldn’t provide our vital services without you, our phenomenal fundraisers. So, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done throughout 2024. Keep your eyes peeled as we look ahead to a year of new challenges to fund the vital care and support for the people of Barnsley and their loved ones.
