Anti-Slavery International

Non-profit Organizations

Working towards freedom from slavery for everyone, everywhere, always.

About us

Anti-Slavery International is committed to eliminating all forms of slavery and slavery like practices. Founded in 1839, we are also the world’s oldest international human rights organisation and base our work on the United Nations treaties against slavery. We work closely with partner organisations from around the world. Our experience at grassroots level informs and shapes our work to influence decision-makers and inspire change on a global level, particularly on bonded labour (also known as debt bondage), descent based slavery, forced labour, forced marriage, the worst forms of child labour, the exploitation of migrant workers in conditions amounting to slavery (particularly migrant domestic workers), and human trafficking. We have consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council and observer status at the International Labour Organisation. We are a non-religious, non-political independent organisation.

  • 👁️⬇️ Spot the signs of forced labour in your supply chains Forced labour is when a person enters (or provides) work or service against their freedom of choice, and cannot leave it without penalty or the threat of penalty. We have highlighted some questions that you and your company should ask in relation to workers in your supply chains to help you identify their vulnerability to forced labour and understand why addressing forced labour is relevant to your business. • A new report from KnowTheChain reinforces what we have said many times before: stronger laws are essential to tackle forced labour and exploitation in business supply chains. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/eT5sE-c9 Stronger laws, such as import bans and a Business, Human Rights and Environment Act, would empower investors to withhold investment from companies like Shein because of their appalling human rights record. Stronger laws would also: 👉 Compel businesses to prioritise human human rights and the environment in their decisions. 👉 Require Shein, which operates in the UK, to address its unethical practices.  👉 Empower the Financial Conduct Authority to make more human-rights-focused decisions on which companies can list in the UK.

  • Joint submission to the Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA): The UK has taken many steps back in tackling vulnerabilities to trafficking and modern slavery. This submission provides a response to the fourth evaluation round of the questionnaire for the evaluation of the implementation of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings in the United Kingdom. Contributors to this joint submission have identified steps back in tackling the issues of trafficking and modern slavery. Since the last evaluation round in 2020, there has been a rollback in the identification, support and protection systems for survivors as a result of the focus on immigration enforcement and securitisation, which led to the introduction of recent legislation such as NABA (The Nationality and Borders Act, and IMA (Illegal Migration Act). 📢We call on the Government to abandon the focus on immigration enforcement and securitisation to ensure appropriate attention can be given to developing a robust prevention strategy to tackle modern slavery and trafficking. This can only be achieved if survivors are guaranteed access to identification and support according to their needs and ensure there are secure pathways for them to report their exploitation without the fear of being criminalised. This submission aims to provide useful tools to facilitate an evaluation round that will encourage the UK authorities into a more strategic, systematic, and robust implementation of their own anti-trafficking commitments and duties. • 📢 Today, on #InternationalMigrantsDay, we celebrate the millions of people who have moved away from their homes and communities in search of safety and better opportunities. We urge governments to take quick and effective action to prevent the widespread abuses migrant workers face. Migrant workers often endure exploitative recruitment practices, poor working conditions, and violations of their fundamental rights. According to The Global Estimates of Modern Slavery, they are also at a higher risk of forced labour compared to local workers. The International Labour Organization (ILO)’s report, released this week: https://lnkd.in/dw93bcYa, highlights that international migrant workers are essential in filling labour shortages in critical sectors such as agriculture and care. For instance, countries like the UK and Italy depend heavily on migrant workers to ensure there are enough fresh fruits and vegetables on their supermarkets' shelves. Despite the crucial role they play in economies around the world, migrant workers are too often treated as disposable. Recruiters frequently exploit them by charging excess fees, pushing them into debt bondage and into situations of forced labour. Businesses take advantage of vulnerabilities linked to their migration status and the lack of knowledge of local languages and their rights. Governments have failed to implement adequate protections to stop unscrupulous actors from exploiting migrant workers. In many cases, they have even introduced hostile policies that perpetuate vulnerabilities to modern slavery. Read more about the injustices faced by migrant workers and what needs to change in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/eicaaqNv
