Aviation experiences for disabled and profoundly ill people, turning the dream of flying into an exhilarating reality!

About us

Aerobility enables disabled people of all ages to turn the dream of flight into an exhilarating and fulfilling reality. Our ethos of full inclusivity means we support people across the entire spectrum of disability, without exception – we know flying can provide a level of challenge and exhilaration difficult to find elsewhere. We also provide opportunities for disabled people to enjoy a wide range of aviation activities, from ground-based experience days, through to one-on-one training and instruction to secure a Private Pilot’s Licence. We own five specially-adapted aircraft and bespoke hoisting equipment, enabling us to make flight both accessible and safe. Our specially-trained flying instructors have built up a comprehensive knowledge on the challenges connecting disability and aviation, which is invaluable in the removing of barriers to participation. In 2016 we supported and provided services to almost 900 disabled people aged 7 to 92 – whatever the impairment, Aerobility have always found a way to get a someone into the pilot seat. Through our partnership with Help for Heroes, around a third of our beneficiaries are wounded, injured or sick (WIS) military personnel. Many cite flying with Aerobility not only as a turning point in their recovery, but also as an integral part of their rehabilitation. The positive impacts of engaging with Aerobility include: - Increased self-confidence, self-belief and independence. - Increased employability and improvements in academic studies. - Inspiring and empowering individuals to break through boundaries in all aspects of their lives. - Enhancements to well-being and social cohesion. - Positive change in an individuals’ long terms outlook on their disability. - Reduction in clinical episodes. - Personal accomplishment and pride. - The chance to do something amazing and experience a level of challenge, exhilaration and joy that it is difficult to find anywhere else!

Updates

  • Our AEP students and their instructors have been busy, cramming in their last few sessions before the end of the year. One of their recent meet ups involved learning about Air Traffic Control from retired NATS ATC officers, and AEP superstars, Martyn Rowlands and Nigel Seal, and guest host RAF ATCO Joseph Bell. Our AEP participants learnt about the importance of ATC in both the world of civil and military aviation. #AEP #ATC

  • Aerobility’s Advocacy Manager and Equal Skies Charter chief, Harvey Matthewson, had an extremely successful trip across the pond last week when he attended the joint ICAO/ACI/IATA Symposium on Accessibility in Civil Aviation. You can read his full write up below:

Last week our very own Harvey Matthewson attended the joint ICAO/ACI/IATA Symposium on Accessibility in Civil Aviation. This event marked the first of it's kind and was hosted at the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Authority) Headquarters in the centre of Montreal, Canada. The event brought together thought leaders from both the aviation industry and the disability community and featured keynote addresses from the Secretary General of ICAO and the Minister of Transport for Canada. Following on from the welcome speeches came a series of panel sessions comprising of a mix of voices from industry and with lived disability experience. The key take aways were: - Accessibility is a priority for ICAO moving forward - Only 2% of wheelchair users feel safe on an aisle chair - People with disabilities should be encouraged to work in aviation In summary, the symposium was a positive step for accessible aviation and we look forward to seeing ICAO continue their work in this area.

  • We often receive wonderful letters and emails from our flyers and we’d like to share this one from scholarship recipient David Turton. “I have just completed my latest five hour scholarship with Martin Jones (Tatenhill Flying Instructor) and I thought it only right to let you know what it has done for me. I can’t thank Aerobility enough, as a charity you’ve allowed me to do something that all my life I’ve wanted to do but has really been out of reach. I don’t say this lightly but it has been absolutely life changing for me. I can’t ever remember looking forward to doing something as much as I have this, as soon as one lesson comes to an end I’m looking forward to the next one. I have to thank Martin who has been a great instructor ( please don’t tell him that, it will go to his head) only joking. He has been a big part of this journey and I’m grateful for his sharp wit but mostly his patience and ability to explain the subject matter to numpties like me. I am writing this with a little sadness knowing that this may have been my last flight ( unless of course there are any more scholarships available)but if it really is the end of my journey, what a fantastic flight to finish on (see photo.) Finally if anyone out there has the chance to read this I would wholeheartedly recommend that you try it, it might just change your life as it has mine. It’s something that I will take with me forever. And I can call myself a PILOT UNDER TRAINING, and how many people can say that?!” This is why we do what we do. #ChangingLives #FlyingHigh #AbilityNotDisability
