Institute of Philanthropy
Non-profit Organizations
Empowered by The Hong Kong Jockey Club and its Charities Trust
About us
The Hong Kong Jockey Club's century-old legacy of philanthropic giving has presented an exceptional opportunity for the Club to establish the Institute of Philanthropy (loP), a "think-fund-do" tank dedicated to promoting philanthropic thought leadership at the local, regional and global levels together with its funder partners, for the common good for societies everywhere. Anchored in the East, the loP acknowledges Asia's growing significance in the global philanthropic ecosystem. With an initial sum of HKD6.8 billion (USD870 million) from The Hong Kong Jockey Club and its Charities Trust, the loP would provide a convening platform to bridge regional and global philanthropic efforts, scale strategic and innovative solutions for global & regional and challenges, and professionalise the philanthropic sector. The loP was formally inaugurated at the Philanthropy for Better Cities Forum in September 2023.

The Asian philanthropic landscape is vibrant and evolving, with organisations commonly employing a diverse range of grant-making practices. Our joint publication, “Examining Trust and Measurement in Asian Philanthropy”, created in partnership with McKinsey & Company, identifies six key grantmaking practices that are particularly prevalent in the Asia context: 1. Programme Co-Creation with Grantees → Many Asian philanthropies create opportunities for collaborative programme development with grantees, ensuring that local expertise and insights are integral to the decision-making process. 2. Priorities Alignment with Multiple Stakeholders → Foundations often align their priorities with multiple stakeholders around common objectives and the prioritisation of potential interventions, fostering coalitions for change. 3. Risk Capital Role → Foundations play a crucial role in providing catalytic capital to fund innovative and high-risk initiatives. However, they sometimes need to establish separate programmes to manage various risk profiles. 4. Multi-Year Unrestricted Grants → Long-term funding is becoming increasingly common, although there are often limits on the flexibility of the project since unrestricted grants remain less common. 5. Support Beyond Funding → Over 85% of interviewed Asian foundations provide more than just financial support, including networks and connections to peers and other funders, as well as capacity building and technical assistance. 6. Community Voice Integration → Foundations are integrating community voices into their grantmaking processes to become more inclusive and participatory, while establishing trust directly with the community. Social impact measurement is undoubtedly crucial in philanthropy, and the term "#MEL" (Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning) frequently takes center stage. This widely adopted framework enables funders and organisations to tailor their #impactmeasurement practices, aligning them with their specific motivations and objectives. The joint publication, “Examining Trust and Measurement in Asian Philanthropy”, by #IoP and McKinsey & Company, examines the evolving landscape of social impact measurement in #Asia, highlighting three key similarities in MEL practices among Asian foundation leaders. 1. Customised approaches to MEL for grantees → Funders tailor their MEL frameworks for each grantee, allowing flexibility in measurement and reporting. This approach reflects trust in grantees' expertise and also enables them to build capacity and experience. Many funders also emphasise the use of qualitative methods to capture complex issues. 2. Rigorous MEL practices in regulated sectors → Certain sectors, such as health interventions and public education systems, require more robust impact evaluations to meet regulatory standards. Foundations are adapting to stricter compliance environments by assisting grantees with necessary forms through third-party contractors. 3 Clear emphasis on learning → Learning is a priority for Asian foundations as they build their MEL systems and capacity of their grantees. This focus not only enhances field development and improves practices but also strengthens relationships with underserved communities. Internally, it promotes knowledge sharing across programs to inform future funding decisions. Want to dive deeper into these insights?
