HR

  • 🌍 Do you know what DEIB stands for? 🌍 This week we will elaborate the B in DEIB. B stands for Belonging.  Belonging is the feeling of security and support someone has when there’s a sense of acceptance and inclusion in a group. Belonging is the result of inclusion efforts (Benevity). The EY Belonging Barometer (2019) shows that 40% of adults experience feeling of isolation at work, therefore it is important to focus on the employees’ sence of belonging. So, ensure that every employee feels that they belong at work (Warner, Greenlee, Butterworth 2024). ✨ Bravely explains how “feeling like an outsider in the workplace can be painful and anxiety-inducing” (Bravely 2021). It is not always easy to fit into a company’s culture, therefore chances are, that almost everyone has felt as an outsider at some point in their career. Because of that, “cultivating a sense of belonging in the workplace is a fundamental part of creating a better workforce for the future.” (Bravely 2021). 🤝 One way to work with belonging is to designate a member of the team to be a go-to mentor or “buddy” for your new hire. Hereby the expierenced colleagues can offer insider tips on navigation the team dynamics and the company culture. The mentor can offer support and making the new hire feel welcomed and valued (HBR 2023). ⭐ A leader can give the employee a feeling of belonging by asking how the person is used to doing specific tasks. Here the leader can adjust or incorporate something recognizable to give the employee a feeling of belonging in the new tasks. We have now elaborated the terms: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging in DEIB –and we hope that you can use some of the recommendations or explanations with you to your workplace. #DEIB #Diversity #Belonging #WorkplaceCulture #DiversityCharter

  • 🌟 Celebrate Saint Lucy’s Day at the Workplace 🌟 Saint Lucy’s Day, celebrated today December 13, brings light and warmth during the darkest days of winter. Rooted in Scandinavian traditions, Saint Lucy's Day celebrates hope and light. You can use this opportunity to share its cultural significance with non-Scandinavian colleagues, including them in the customs of the day✨ In Denmark the key tradition is the processions led by a "Lucia bride" wearing a white robe and a crown of candles, while children sing the peaceful "Santa Lucia" song, spreading light throughout the community. 🎶🕯️ Here's a few ideas on how you can celebrate Saint Lucy’s Day at your workplace: 🕯️ Candle Lighting Ceremony: Set up a space where employees can light candles (or battery-powered ones for safety) to symbolize hope and unity. 🎉 Decorate Together: Invite colleagues to create a traditional Lucia crown, either for wearing or as a decoration, and add some festive charm to the workspace. 🌟 Inclusive Lucia Procession: Organize a voluntary Lucia procession, where participants can dress in white, wear candle crowns (or hold battery candles), and sing songs like "Santa Lucia". Saint Lucy's Day is a wonderful opportunity to bring light into our workplaces, celebrate unity, and embrace the warmth of the holiday season. 🌟 #SaintLucysDay #LuciaDay #DiversityCalendar #Inclusion #DiversityCharter

  • 🌍 Do you know what DEIB stands for? 🌍  This week we will elaborate the I in DEIB. I stands for Inclusion. You might see acronyms like DEI and DEIB. The difference? In DEI, Belonging (B) is often considered part of Inclusion. As @Sara Louise Muhr puts it: “Inclusion is a measure of whether a unique individual feels a sense of belonging in a group” (Muhr, 2024). In Diversity Charter Denmark, we work with an DEIB approach.  So, what is Inclusion about?  It’s about creating space for everyone—listening to, valuing, and respecting each unique perspective (Warner, Greenlee, Butterworth, 2024). It’s also about fostering an environment where people feel welcomed, respected, and empowered to thrive (Davis, 2022). It is the leaders and colleagues'’ task to create an inclusive work environment, so people can feel welcomed, valued and respected. Thereby ‘inclusion’ is a practice.  You can create a more inclusive environment by:   🍴 In the lunchroom, ensure everyone feels considered by providing vegetarian, halal, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. One topic during lunch can be about children, because many have children, but not everyone. Therefore, try to change the topic, if there is someone without children, so every employee feels included. It is about making a balance. 🗣️ During meetings, actively invite different voices and ideas to the table. ✨ You can also decorate the workplace for the holidays in the employees’ religion or beliefs – for example at Diwali, Eid or Easter.  Next week, we will elaborate on the meaning of B for Belonging. Make a comment on how you understand Belonging #DEIB #Diversity #Inclusion #WorkplaceCulture #DiversityCharter

  • 🌍 Do you know what DEIB stands for? 🌍  This week we will elaborate on the E in DEIB. E stands for Equity. At first glance, treating everyone equally seems like the fairest approach. Although in reality, fairness often requires something different: equity. As @Sara Louise Muhr points out: “Working with diversity through the lens of equity means working for equal opportunities despite people’s differences” (Muhr 2024).  Equity is about recognizing that not everyone starts from the same place or faces the same barriers. It's about tailoring support to meet individual needs, ensuring that everyone has the same opportunity to succeed (Rugs and Holmes 2024). For employees from marginalized groups, systemic barriers — like limited access to mentorship, unconscious bias, or unequal opportunities — can make success harder to achieve. Equity works to dismantle those barriers by addressing policies, structures, and processes that inadvertently favor advantaged groups (Pendell 2022). In Diversity Charter Denmark we believe that in order to treat people equally, they must be treated differently. That can feel uncomfortable at first. But here’s the thing: equity isn’t about favoritism; it’s about fairness. When we embrace equity, we:  ✅ Empower diverse talents to thrive.  ✅ Foster innovation through inclusion.  ✅ Build stronger, more equitable workplaces where everyone feels valued. We can foster equity by:  🟢 Establishing transparent criteria for advancement and monitoring disparities in promotion rates.  🟢Provide mandatory training on equity, unconscious bias, and inclusive leadership for all employees.  🟢Creating support networks for marginalized groups to enhance inclusion and representation.    How is your organization addressing equity in the workplace? Let’s keep this important conversation going! 👇 Next week, we’ll elaborate the meaning of I for Inclusion. Make a comment on how you understand ‘Inclusion’. #DEIB #Equity #Inclusion #Diversity #WorkplaceCulture #Leadership #DiversityCharter

  • 🌐 Marking the UN’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities 🌐  We attended Dansk Erhverv's conference to commemorate the UN’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) 🌏. Since 1992, December 3rd has been dedicated to raising awareness and promoting the rights of people with disabilities. At Diversity Charter Denmark, we take an intersectional approach, looking at every aspect of the individual. We live in a world shaped by many biases – including those against people with visible disabilities. That’s why we focus on highlighting their potential as individuals and see them as more than their disabilities. The event emphasized supporting people with disabilities by breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for them to thrive in workplaces, social communities, and beyond. It was inspiring to hear presentations that addressed these challenges while also identifying ways to foster greater inclusion. 🤝 One key takeaway: we must focus on the individual – not the disability. Everyone has potential and dreams, and by ensuring equity, we can combat loneliness, reduce exclusion, and strengthen self-esteem, ultimately improving quality of life. 🌟 The conference also featured powerful personal stories, including Emma Lund, a Danish Paralympic Gold Medalist 🥇. It was very inspiring listing to her story on how the assistive devices for activities from Parasport Danmark helped her achieving her dreams. ✨ While we marked this important day yesterday, the conversation must continue every single day. Let’s work together to build a more inclusive and accessible world. 🌏 #Inclusion #Accessibility #UNday #DanskErhverv #InternationalDisabilitiesDay2024

  • 🌍 Do you know what DEIB stands for? 🌍  As we announced last week, we’re diving into the meaning behind DEIB. This week, we’re focusing on the first letter: D for Diversity.  Diversity is fundamentally about people and human differences. As Sara Louise Muhr explains: “Diversity is the composition of different people in a team or an organization” (Muhr 2024). The UK Equality Act defines a diverse organization as one where “the workforce is made up of people with different backgrounds, circumstances, identities and experiences. Its people are representative of the organization’s community” (Warner, Greenlee, Butterworth 2024). 💡 At Diversity Charter Denmark, we believe that fostering diversity in the labor market isn’t just important—it’s essential. But diversity goes beyond the visible. It’s not only about characteristics like age, gender, or visible disabilities. It also includes invisible traits such as education, nationality, sexual orientation, beliefs, experiences, mental health, and more. That’s why we also emphasize intersectionality—valuing individuals as whole and multifaceted people. 🌟 We find it important and necessary to work with diversity at the workplace, because every employee brings their own perspective, ideas and experiences. Thereby a diverse workforce can bring new innovative solutions to the organization or company. Diversity creates an inclusive work environment, where there is room for everyone. We can for example create a more diverse workforce by rethinking our recruitment strategies to avoid unconscious bias and thereby select the right candidates. If you remove names and other identifying information from applications can help you build a more diverse workforce (Vivek 2022). In Diversity Charter Denmark we work with diversity (and DEIB) through an intersectional lens. You can become a part of the charter by becoming a signatory and thereby enhancing your focus on diversity. Contact Sally Issaoui at diversitycharter@ligeadgang.dk if you are interested in signing the charter. 📅 Next week, we’ll explore the E in DEIB: Equity. In the meantime, we’d love to hear your thoughts: What does equity mean to you? #DEIB #Diversity #Inclusion #WorkplaceCulture #DiversityCharter

  • 🌍 Do you know what DEIB stands for? 🌍  Over the next four weeks, we’ll break down the four pillars that DEIB represents: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. Each week, we'll dive into one letter and its contribution to the workplace culture. Next week, we’ll start with the D for Diversity – what it means and why it matters.  🗨️ Make a comment on how you understand ‘diversity’. When DEIB is prioritized, workplaces move beyond diversity in hiring to create an environment that is fair, inclusive, and welcoming to everyone. The results? 🌟 More creativity, 💡 greater innovation, and 😊 higher job satisfaction. Many Danish companies are already leading by example, demonstrating how DEIB can unlock the full potential of their teams. At Diversity Charter Denmark, we approach DEIB through an intersectional lens, helping workplaces build inclusive and empowering environments for all.  #DEIB #Diversity #Inclusion #WorkplaceCulture
