Om os

The Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies (Instituttet for Fremtidsforskning) is an independent, non-profit futures think tank – founded in 1969. We help people and organisations imagine, work with, and shape their future. The Institute was founded in 1969 by former Danish Finance Minister and OECD-Secretary General, Professor Thorkil Kristensen, with the support of visionary public and private organisations, to better qualify decision-making through futures studies and to contribute to the betterment of our society. That is our purpose. The Institute is today a truly global entity working with public, private, philanthropic, and academic organisations around the world. We act as an advisory, a publisher, an event organiser, and as an initiator of various future orientated joint-venture initiatives. The Institute is also configured as a community of sorts, offering memberships for organisations and individuals. We believe that, as the Institute itself, the future belongs to no-one and yet to everyone. We are by decree here to contribute to the betterment of our society, meaning better for the largest possible number of stakeholders. Our own definition of better is based on our perception of our Nordic values firmly rooted in trust, equality, openness, integrity, and inclusiveness, and a society where critical decisions about the future are based on insights, not intuition. Our research within futures studies is essentially about spotting initial signals, identifying patterns, and convert analysis into insights about potential futures. The Institute does not predict the future, this is of course impossible, but instead we generate the best possibly qualified assumptions for potential futures. All of the Institute’s profits are allocated to further futures studies and to realising our purpose.

  • 📣 A short Q&A with Simon Max Bloch Lajboschitz CEO, Khora  We are thrilled that Simon is joining us for The Summit 2025. We asked him what he believes the future of Extended Reality, wearables and AI look like. Q: How do you foresee XR addressing tensions between empowerment and overreliance in its next evolution? A: “The more successful a tool is at solving problems, the more we will end up relying on it. I think the AI x Smartglass tool will be 100 times the internet in both empowerment and over-reliance. We will have to balance the use to avoid total reliance." Read the full Q&A below, and get your tickers here 👉 https://lnkd.in/difF7ZKp This year, we're diving deep into how the relationship between humans and technology is evolving, with AI, extended reality (XR), and other game-changing new technologies driving us towards a future where the physical and virtual worlds merge. We'll explore what this means for Nordic businesses – from future-proofing strategies to developing talent and understanding the broader societal impact. • Are you a student curious about Futures Literacy? 👉 Then join Futures Lab byStudents - A new project that prepares young people for the unpredictability of the future. byStudents (Studenterhuset) and the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies are launching the project ‘Futures Lab byStudents’ – a program featuring workshops and events to strengthen students’ futures competencies and prepare them to navigate a complex and unpredictable future. The project aims to enhance students' futures literacy, sharpening their ability to innovate and act in the face of uncertainty and complexity. Learn more and sign up 👉 https://lnkd.in/duUg7tAf Based on Danish company case studies, students will develop concrete solutions to selected societal challenges and hone their skills to drive meaningful change. The project consists of three elements: competency training, events, and networking. 📣 “The ability to imagine and explore different, possible futures – known as 'futures literacy' – is innate in all of us. However, if we don’t practice it, most people will struggle to envision a hopeful future beyond flying cars, robots, and catastrophic climate changes. Therefore, it is crucial that both current and future citizens develop these skills,” says Thor Svanholm Gustavfson, Senior Advisor at the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies. Natural resources student Anna Leed Madsen agrees: “I think there is a lot of power in limiting people’s imaginations about possible futures. It is incredibly important that we learn to challenge those scenarios.” Futures Lab byStudents is supported by the Tuborgfondet and the Knud Højgaard Foundation. • In "CIFS' 10 Principles for Strategic Foresight", we present the principles that serve as the foundation for how we approach strategic foresight as a discipline. We have a long history and proven track-record of working with organisations worldwide, applying strategic foresight to specific societal and business challenges. We have compiled and refined the principles from our own extensive experience, as well as drawn inspiration from other thinkers and practitioners within the field. Feel free to share! 💪 Organisations with a culture of strategic foresight perform fare better then those who do not apply futures thinking on a regular basis. However, every strategic foresight project is different, and should be based on its own specific context, premises and objectives. Some are large-scale, deeply integrated into the organisation, while others are more lightweight and ad hoc. Large-scale and comprehensive setups are not necessarily needed to benefit and learn from strategic foresight, and every organisation or team is capable of developing simple processes that give them the ability to better anticipate the future. Situation should define approach. Reach out to Simon Fuglsang Østergaard and Lasse Jonasson if you want to leverage strategic foresight in your organisation 👋 Nabil Ali Jaloud - Daria (Dasha) Krivonos #strategicforesight #foresight #futuresthinking

Our upcoming Futures Seminar will bridge this gap, helping you: 🌊 Understand how past consumer cultures shape future market trends 💡 Decode the complex motivations behind changing consumer behaviors 🔑 Develop more nuanced approaches and strategies for anticipating market shifts 🔭 Learn to see beyond traditional consumer research methods Join us for the online Futures Seminar on next wednesday, December 19. Sign up here 👉 https://lnkd.in/df5UYs2v Understanding our future isn't about looking at isolated moments, but recognizing how our past, present, and potential futures are deeply connected. In today's rapidly changing world, this interconnected perspective is crucial—especially when exploring how we as people and our behaviors continuously evolve – in terms of how we live, work, communicate and consume. From digital transformation to shifting social values, the consumer landscape is in perpetual motion, creating a need for understanding the interconnections between how we are shaped by our pasts, and structured by our presents, which in turn will inform our future practices. We need to bridge the existing (forced) tension between short-term, data-driven projections and long-term, qualitative explorations of potential futures Speakers Futurist and Senior Advisor Tamira Vámosi-Snell will host this Futures Seminar. We are thrilled that she will be joined by Lia (Linda) Arvidsson Avidsson, Futurist at H&M Group💡 We will take questions from the audience members at the end of the Futures Seminar. #behaviourchange #foresight #futuresthinking Lasse Jonasson - Nabil Ali Jaloud

• Greetings, future explorers! Meet Aeon and Mewtronix! 😸 We are proud to launch “Aeon and Mewtronix – A Futures Tale” - a comic designed to help young people imagine and explore the possibilities of the future.  We have created this comic because we believe children and young people need a more constructive way of relating to the future.  Supporting their imagination will strengthen their sense of hope and agency, allowing them to look past the dominant images of the future, which are often characterised by hopelessness and scary predictions. This will give them the tools to actively engage in shaping their own future. We hope this comic contributes to improving futures literacy among young people in Denmark and beyond.     You can download the comic and the teaching material (in Danish) that goes with it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dqWRi9se A heartfelt thank you to Knud og Dagny Gad Andresens Foundation and Brødrene Hartmanns Foundation for their generous support, which made this project possible. And a special thanks to Professor Sohail Inayatullah for co-authoring and providing invaluable guidance throughout the process. • Political Momentum for Future Generations! 💪 Yesterday was World Futures Day, and we want celebrate the positive momentum we're witnessing. There's growing recognition of the need to consider future generations by thinking long-term and integrating systemic approaches to the future into our decision-making processes. This September, the world saw a groundbreaking Futures Pact between UN member states, including a Declaration for Future Generations. At the Institute, we work to ensure ambitious political implementation of this declaration's transformative potential. Our efforts include active engagement in Fremtidskoalitionen (the Danish Coalition for the Future.) Therefore, it's encouraging to see increasing political focus and support, highlighted in a compelling opinion piece by an MP and former Minister of Foreign Affairs 👉 https://lnkd.in/d9n4jJXG He advocates for future-focused competencies within political systems, ensuring that future generations are not just an afterthought but an integral part of decision-making. Let's maintain this momentum and continue constructive dialogues to achieve a Danish model that benefits not only future generations but also those living today. Reach out if you want to know more about our work to integrate foresight and representation for future generations in policy making 👋 Jonas Gissel Mikkelsen - Thor Svanholm Gustavfson - Daria (Dasha) Krivonos - Nicklas Larsen - Toke Hanghøj #foresight #futuresthinking #anticipatorygovernance #futuregenerations
