Interreg SK-AT is an EU programme for funding crossborder projects on innovation, culture, environment and transport

About us

Interreg is one of the key instruments of the European Union (EU) supporting cooperation across borders through project funding. Its aim is to jointly tackle common challenges and find shared solutions in fields such as health, environment, research, education, transport, sustainable energy and more. Interreg programmes are being financed by the European Regional Development Fund to promote the harmonious development of the territory of the European Union at different levels. The Slovak-Austrian (SK-AT) cross-border area offers significant potentialities to further the socio-economic and institutional integration for a well-performing European region. To contribute to the further integration and sustainable development of the area the SK-AT cross-border co-operation programme aims to improve frameworks and policies and deliver specific solutions to tackle common challenges. The programme area consists on the Slovak side of the Bratislava and Trnava self-governing regions, on the Austrian side the northern and central Burgenland, Vienna and Lower Austria. The list of eligible applicants is specified with a specific call. Mentioned regions, together with Ministry of investments, regional development and informatization of Slovak Republic (MIRRI SR) as Managing Authority, are the main programme partners and they cooperate to implement the programme objectives.

  • GET TO KNOW THE PROJECTS OF THE INTERREG SLOVAKIA - AUSTRIA PROGRAMME Sustainability at Heart: The GREENCHAR Project In today’s world, the demand for sustainable urban living is more pressing than ever. Cities are growing rapidly – by 2030, nearly 5 billion people will live in urban areas. But with this growth comes new environmental challenges: polluted air, flooding, and the gradual warming of our cities due to increasing impermeable concrete and asphalt surfaces replacing natural green spaces. What’s the solution? Green infrastructure! Expanding urban greenery, like vegetative roofs, is a promising way to tackle these issues. But designing green roofs is no easy task—they require specific materials, substrates, and plant types that can store rainwater, support plant growth, and combat urban heat islands. This is where cutting-edge research comes in. The GREENCHAR Project brings together an international team to explore innovative materials, focusing on biochar made from waste biomass and sewage sludge. This biochar could be a game-changer, offering a sustainable and eco-friendly option for roof substrates. By using recycled and upcycled materials, we’re not only addressing urban environmental issues but also supporting the principles of the circular economy.

In the photos you can see the result of the amazing work of people who participated in the revitalization of the garden As part of the project “Heritage SK-AT”, both interior and exterior of the manor house were also fully renovated.
