For Andrew Kiesel, great pavement engineering is about striking the perfect balance: practical designs that speed up delivery and innovative ideas that shape the future. With 13 years of experience, Andrew – an Associate Geotechnical & Pavements Engineer in our Melbourne office – is championing sustainable solutions like bio-bitumen, a natural alternative to standard asphalt. “I’m excited to see how bio-bitumen will influence the industry, reducing the reliance on crude oil while delivering durable roads,” Andrew says. Steven Lopati, Business Development Lead - Samoa, and Richard Reinen-Hamill, Sector Director - Finance and Insurance, attended the 2024 Commonwealth Business Forum held recently in Apia, Samoa. The Forum coincided with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Held every two years, this meeting was the first one hosted by a Pacific Island nation. This year's theme, 'One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Commonwealth', emphasised climate change. There were great speakers and discussions around: - Access to finance and its scalability to fund projects as critical - Emphasis on collaboration between governments and donors to facilitate climate mitigation and adaptation projects - The role of private equity in supporting investment-ready projects - Why determination and optimism are key to fixing climate change Steven and Richard also participated in roundtable sessions on Building Resilient Infrastructure and Unlocking Green Investment: Risk Mitigation. “The Business Forum was well attended by Government Officials and business leaders from public and private sectors. There were great inspirational speakers and leaders around climate mitigation. Samoa were amazing hosts with their warm hospitality, with villages across the island each representing a different Commonwealth country,” Steven remarked. He even had the opportunity to capture a picture of King Charles, who was also visiting Samoa at the time! #CHOGM #ClimateChange #InfrastructureResilience #GreenInvestment

Soil is an essential cornerstone of our planet, yet it often goes underappreciated. It serves as a foundation that sustains everything from thriving ecosystems to the food on our plates. This year’s United Nations World Soil Day theme, Caring for Our Soil, highlights the critical role of healthy soil in sustaining ecosystems and communities. We asked our ecology and geotechnical experts from across Tonkin + Taylor to dig deep and explore the importance of healthy soil, the consequences of degrading soil health, methods, and restoration of our soil. We’re passionate about building a better, more sustainable future – starting with our own spaces. Our Pōneke Wellington office fit-out has been awarded a 6 Green Star – Interiors NZ V1.10 Certified Built Rating from the NZGBC. This prestigious rating signifies ‘world leadership’ in sustainable office design and reflects our commitment to creating and sustaining a better world. Our Victoria Street building was evaluated on management, indoor environment quality, energy, water, materials, transport, emissions, acoustics and innovation. Hannah Kelly, Environmental Consultant, says the 6 Green Star certification recognises our commitment to continually improving and the great work the team has done to create a healthy workspace for our people. “The rating considered how we reused furniture, engaged with our people, provided great amenities and spaces and used ECA-licensed carpet and paints. It also recognises our negotiations to install EV charging points so we can upgrade our fleet to EVs. This demonstrates to our Pōneke clients that we are committed to our sustainability journey to design, build, fit-out and relocate our people, embedding sustainability in everything we do.” Thank you to our Green Star Accredited Professional Patrick Stone at TM Consultants Ltd, the designers and project managers at Unispace, and our technical experts at Tonkin + Taylor contributed to waste management, acoustics, health and safety, and sustainable procurement strategies. #sustainability #greenstar #greenbuildings #officefitout Helen Croad, Hugh Cherrill
