How do you grow your freelance business? 🤔 After my last post, people reached out to me to ask me exactly this. So here are my six tips on how to grow as a freelancer in Finland: 1) Network, network, network 👥 You (like me) are probably BORED to hear this but damn is networking important in Finland. If you are starting out with your business, I recommend thinking about where your ideal audience is and going to those events: - You work in marketing? Join The Awesome Marketers and attend their events. - Want to tap into gaming? Go to a game jam. - Interested in startups? Maria 01 has great parties and workshops. 2) Start with what comes easy 🙂 When I started as a freelancer I did what was easy to me: writing blog posts and managing social media. I knew exactly how to do this, so it was an easy sell. Being an entrepreneur is hard enough, so you want to at least feel confident in what you are selling. 3) Get those first clients 🙌 I remember when I showed the Business Finland advisor my business plan and he said: "This is all nice but you need to know how to get your first clients." Without someone buying, you don't have a business. My first clients were people with whom I had a rapport and who were willing to "take the risk" of working with someone new. Once you have those first clients, they are your social proof for whoever you want to land next as a customer. 4) Be kind 🧡 Seriously, I've heard this again and again: People like working with you if you are genuinely nice. No one hires a freelancer that is a pain in the ass. It's hard enough to have colleagues like that. Freelancers are easy to fire, so it's better to be fun to work with. One of my all-time favorite freelancers is Rémy Bertoli 🍕. I worked on two websites with him and I'd hire him in an instant for another website. Is he great at his job? Absolutely. But he's also one of the kindest people I know and a joy to work with. 5) Set clear boundaries 🫸 My clients know my working hours, how long it takes for me to answer an email or a Slack message (one business day), and how they can reach me (never via phone, I'm a millennial after all). When you have 5+ clients, it's impossible to get back to everyone immediately. I also never work on weekends for my clients but I might work on my business on the weekend (website, branding, accounting). 6) Be good at your job 💪 This should be a no-brainer but it's even more important as a freelancer than a full-time team member. Freelancers usually do work that is easily outsourced. It also means that you're usually easily kicked out. I'm very grateful that I've never been fired at any full-time or freelance jobs. But I also know that it has to do with the fact that I work hard to create a good end result for my clients. What has helped you in the past to grow your business as a freelancer in Finland?
