"Malmin Lyhty" light installation at Malmitalo brightens dark winter days To bring light and colour to the dark season, architects Gülcan Ozan, Feng Ye, and Asli Ufacik of Lundén Architecture Company have designed “Malmin Lyhty” or “Malmi Lantern” for Malmitalo. Inspired by sunset colours, the warm installation serves as a beacon, inviting people to come together in Malmitalo. “Each light element symbolizes an individual, reflecting different characters and stories. Together, this interconnected diversity forms an impressive and unique light installation that embodies the spirit of Malmi”, explains the designers. The project, part of the Kauko project for innovations, aims to promote active movement and social inclusion among the elderly while creating an interactive space for activities such as watching movies, yoga, flower arranging as well as a place to learn more about events. Using parametric design and 3D printing enables the creation of light elements that are organically shaped and can be arranged in multiple and versatile ways. The light elements are interactive and react to people’s movements, fostering new shared experiences and discussions. The opening of the installation will be celebrated on Monday, December 9, 2024, during the Senior Citizen’s Service Market Day, and it will be on display until March 2025. You can meet the designers at 10:00 and 13:00 today at Malmintalo (Ala-Malmin tori 1), where they will discuss “Urban environments as an experimenting platform for well-being innovations: Introduction to Malmi experiments”. Admission is free. “Jõeorg” awarded third prize in Maakri Quarter Competition Lunden Architecture Company has received third prize in the open architecture and urban space competition for their proposal of a resilient new quarter in Maakri, Tallinn. “Jõeorg” proposes a contemporary urban river valley that will serve as the city’s blue-green heart. The design reintroduces a natural, functioning river landscape reminiscent of the historic Härjapea River, creating a vital green and blue artery to meet both current and future environmental needs. Strategically located between local and tourist attractions, Jõeorg aims to be a dynamic and inclusive destination for residents and visitors, blending the past and future in one biodiverse and culturally rich environment within Tallinn’s iconic skyline. The proposal was developed by Lundén Architecture Company in collaboration with Tallinn-based office, Arhitekt11. The two offices are currently constructing Raadi Daycare, the first building in their winning design for the Raadi Educational and Community Centre. Getting a Glimpse of the Current Trends in Wood Construction in Uruguay During two inspiring weeks in Uruguay, we had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the country’s current developments in wood construction and architecture. Through a well curated program of meetings, lectures and site visits, we engaged in many thought provoking discussions with our colleagues in Uruguay. We want to thank Matias Carballal and Mauricio López Franco of FROM, curators of the Festival de la Madera 2024, for inviting us to create an installation for the wood festival in Campo Abierto and for generously hosting us during the entire trip. A special thanks also goes to Tamara Cubas for her outstanding work in producing and organizing the entire festival. Building the installation gave us a chance to collaborate with local students on a real hands-on project, an experience that was both rewarding and fun. We appreciated their enthusiasm and willingness to try different things and learn news skills. We also learned a lot from them! The lectures at University of the Republic of Uruguay, organized by Bernardo Martin of Studio Taller Martín in the Department of Architecture, Design and Urbanism (FADU), and at Agencia Nacional Vivienda (ANV), with opening words by Klaus Mill, President of the agency, provided an excellent framework for lively discussions. We were honored to have the Honorary Consul Andrew Cooper and Diego Ranea, President of the Argentine-Finnish Chamber of Commerce attend the talk at ANV. It was great to be able to share insights and explore potential collaborations between Uruguay and Finland. In between our site visits to numerous interesting buildings, we also had inspiring discussions with Jaime Miller, Juan Gutiérrez, and many others. We are grateful to Kaisa Baiardi, our collaborator, for connecting us with Uruguayan architects, developers and representatives of the wood industry. We look forward to further developing collaborations and learning more about the exciting advancements in wood construction in Uruguay. Festival de la Madera 2024 in Rivera, Uruguay provides a platform for exploring the interdependencies between wood and the forest ecosystem The Wood Week (November 4 -10, 2024) invites us to investigate the ecosystems present in the territorial, economic, productive, cultural and environmental transformations related to the growth of the wood industry in Uruguay. The festival provides a rich offering of events oriented towards action, reflection and celebration around wood. The program includes a forum with conferences and exchanges as well as four collective design and construction workshops led by international teams of architects and designers, or Laboratories, in which small scale wooden structures are built. Eero Lunden, Rubén Tomás Verde and Ron Aasholm of Lunden Architecture Company are leading one of the Laboratories. The other Lab leaders are: Zuloark from Spain, Al Borde from Ecuador and Atelier Fanelsa from Germany. The prototypes and experiments built in the Laboratories will become part of the growing repertoire of projects carried out in Campo Abierto in Rivera, Uruguay. Raadi Kindergarten moves to building phase Tartu Municipal Government has signed a construction agreement with KRC Ehitus and the work is ready to start. The kindergarten is expected to receive its first students in the fall of 2025. The kindergarten is the first part of the larger complex including a school, sports center and community park. During the first years, the building will also provide a temporary home for the Raadi elementary school. The school building is planned to be built in 2028-2029. The kindergarten is carefully designed to provide an inspiring environment for learning and play for children. Its modern, rational use of wood in the structure, facades, and interior surfaces creates a strong connection between the surrounding landscape and the interior spaces. It makes it possible to bring nature outside into the curriculum of education. Raadi Kindergarten has been designed by Lunden Architecture Company together with Estonian company Arhitekt11. The design is based on their winning proposal for the international architecture competition in 2022. The landscape architecture solution was born from the collaboration of Lundén Architecture Company and Tartu-based landscape firm, TajuRuum. Tartu Postimees announced the signing of the construction contract in an article on October 30, 2024: https://lnkd.in/d6tk844C #lundenarchitecture #Arhitekt11 #RaadiLastead #architecture #woodarchitecture #tartuvald #educationbuildings
