“Jõeorg” awarded third prize in Maakri Quarter Competition Lunden Architecture Company has received third prize in the open architecture and urban space competition for their proposal of a resilient new quarter in Maakri, Tallinn. “Jõeorg” proposes a contemporary urban river valley that will serve as the city’s blue-green heart. The design reintroduces a natural, functioning river landscape reminiscent of the historic Härjapea River, creating a vital green and blue artery to meet both current and future environmental needs. Strategically located between local and tourist attractions, Jõeorg aims to be a dynamic and inclusive destination for residents and visitors, blending the past and future in one biodiverse and culturally rich environment within Tallinn’s iconic skyline. The proposal was developed by Lundén Architecture Company in collaboration with Tallinn-based office, Arhitekt11. The two offices are currently constructing Raadi Daycare, the first building in their winning design for the Raadi Educational and Community Centre. Last week, I touched on the importance of giving African Architecture a bigger spotlight within the conservation and sustainability sector. 🗒️ Let us dive into some fun facts about it. 🏊🏾♀️ Did you know: 💡African Architecture has long used locally sourced and eco-friendly building materials like mud, grasses, stone, and timber, which are not only renewable and biodegradable but express the local context with pride. 💡Among good examples of African Architecture that stood the test of time in Southern Africa is the 'Great Zimbabwe', known to have formed part of a large and wealthy global trading network of the 11th-century CE (Late Iron age), with many other examples spread across the African continent. 💡South Africa's traditional African Architecture is diverse displaying regional, climatic and cultural influences - from the decorative motives and prints of AmaNdebele, to Sotho-Tswana distinctive courtyard design, and the AmaZulu, and AmaXhosa use of circular (Rondavel), single-room structures with conical thatched roofs to form a hierarchy of symbolically and strategically placed spaces. African Architecture is continuously evolving, incorporating modern influences and cannot be fossilised in space and time.💫 The fact is, African Architecture is influencing the contemporary architectural discourse: blending traditional architectural innovations with current space needs, to create sustainable and eco-friendly structures that are both aesthetically pleasing, sustainable and functional.🧱 Within the context of South African built heritage conservation and sustainability - the question is, to what extent are we paying attention to the conservation and promotion of African Architecture and its influences within built heritage?🤔 We have been granted a wealth of knowledge, our responsibility is to integrate it within the built heritage conservation and sustainability space, i.e., its merits, materiality, and functionality.✅ . . . #nompumelelonzuza #nzuzaarchitects #heritageconservation #africanheritageconservation #africanarchitecture #africanbuiltheritage #builtheritage #contemporarydesign #sustainabledesign

Cross Works was commissioned to design a masterplan for a 50 hectare brownfield site in central Almaty (the largest city in Kazakhstan) that was to seamlessly knit in with the existing city and align with the stringent policies and regulations of the local authority. whilst satisfying the ambitious requirements of a brief that asked for 2,000,000 sq/m of mixed-use floor space. The masterplan was made up of a variety of residential typologies, as well supporting community facilities (social infrastructure), commercial uses, cultural buildings and a stunning landscape strategy which also tied neatly into Almaty’s existing green space network, providing the locals with an abundance of useable open space and carefully designed public realm; all of which currently stands as a less attractive, industrial enclave of the city. Overall masterplanning and architectural design by Cross Works, with support from DOME+PARTNERS and landscape support from Alexander Saunders Ltd, with visualisation support from SNT visual. #masterplan #urbandesign #architecture #mixeduse #urbanregeneration #brownfield #redevelopment #futurecities #sustainablecities #walkablecities #greencities #crossworks #xw #almaty #kazakhstan #centralasia

SALT architects PTY Ltd were crowned inaugural winners of the Coverland Roof Tile Award of Excellence at the Corobrik (Pty) Ltd South African Institute of Architects Awards for Excellence and for Merit in partnership with Coverland. Fresh from his prize-winning trip to the World Architecture Festival in Singapore last week, Gustav Roberts of SALT Architects gave us a summary of his experience: “The trip to the World Architecture Festival in Singapore was remarkable. Experiencing such a progressive city first-hand—one that functions almost like a precisely designed machine—showcased an ideal of “pragmatic utopia” that the developed world seems to be striving toward. Singapore’s vision of becoming a “City in a Garden” is an inspiring priority, and the extensive greenery everywhere contributes to a magical urban experience. The city’s openness, with few barriers or boundaries like fences, allows residents and visitors alike the freedom to explore seamlessly across properties. This intentional design seems certain to help foster a strong sense of ownership and belonging among residents. At the festival itself, it was inspiring to witness incredible architectural work presented by people from all backgrounds and parts of the world. The projects ranged in scale from small pavilions to entire cities, reminding us that these achievements come from regular people with the same challenges and humanity as we have in South Africa. One notable topic was the concept of “Sponge Cities”—urban areas designed to absorb and manage water more effectively. It sparked reflections on how these principles might influence the development of Cape Town, an official Wetland City. This concept could be highly relevant to our unique urban landscape and climate. A recurring thought was how successful architecture starts with a zoomed-out view, ensuring that it is good urbanism first. Our challenge in South Africa, however, is how to achieve this vision within a context where safety and security remain top priorities. Thanks again to Coverland and SAIA for the landmark opportunity.” #itsneverjustaroof #coverland #concreterooftiles #rooftiles #proudlylocal

Our vision proposal for Basra Park Location: Basra, Iraq The vision for the park centers around a symbolic design that honors the past, present, and future. "The Buttress of Time" is a 100-meter-tall monument composed of three architectural buttresses, each representing these temporal phases. The design integrates water, landscape, and plaza elements to create a reflective and commemorative space for martyrs. Visitors are guided through natural landscapes, ceremonial plazas, and a museum, offering both solemn reflection and public engagement. The park serves as a place for inspiration, education, and community gatherings. #basra #iraq #architecture #landscape #park #monument #ArchitectureDesign #UrbanPlanning #MonumentDesign #LandscapeArchitecture #PublicSpaceDesign #CommemorativeArchitecture #CulturalHeritage #DesignInspiration #FutureVision #CommunitySpaces #ArchitecturalInnovation #UrbanDevelopment #SustainableDesign #SpatialExperience #DesignForReflection

Just got reminded that I am a bit older than I thought… 😅 During my architecture studies, the Malagueira Quarter in Évora, Portugal, reached its completion after two decades of development in 1997. While on a summer vacation road trip through Portugal 🇵🇹, I visited this iconic neighborhood today and was struck by how its design, over 30 years old, remains a testament to #sustainable and adaptable urban planning. Álvaro Siza’s vision allowed residents the freedom to modify their units, creating a dynamic and personalized community space. This flexibility has fostered a unique #identity for Malagueira, seamlessly blending with the historic fabric of Évora while standing as a distinct entity. The project’s enduring success lies in its commitment to serving the community, rather than seeking architectural grandeur. Siza’s approach, integrating low-rise, terraced houses with innovative infrastructure akin to ancient aqueducts, emphasizes functionality and harmony with the landscape. This serves as a powerful reminder: architecture and urban planning should prioritize #societalneeds and #sustainability over monumentalism. 🌿🏘️ #Architecture #UrbanPlanning #Sustainability #ÁlvaroSiza #CommunityDesign

🌎🏨Did you know? Sustainable architecture not only preserves the environment but also enhances community well-being. The Lisio Scorg Secondary School in Burkina Faso is a prime example of how thoughtful design can merge with local resources to create something truly remarkable. 🌱✨ What's even more interesting? The school's use of local laterite stone not only gives the building its beautiful reddish hue but also serves as a natural insulator, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night🌡💡 Innovative features like perforated plaster vaults for natural lighting and air towers to cool the interior make this school a blueprint for future sustainable projects. Imagine if more schools around the world adopted such practices. 🏨🌿 #SustainableArchitecture #GreenBuilding #EcoFriendlvDesign #BurkinaFaso #FrancisKere #UgreenTips #SustainableFuture
