This question is one of several that researcher Martin Wallstam from ETOUR, Mid Sweden University, has been has been asking in his research about events. In his presentation “Measuring the unmeasurable: The role of social value in strategic decisions about events”. Martin will discuss why this might be the case and what could be done to address this problem. Tourism Actors Believe in Culture The ICH North project has organized various workshops and brainstorming meetings between cultural actors and the business community. The theme of the workshop held at the Central Ostrobothnia 2024 Tourism Forum earlier this year was the utilization of intangible cultural heritage in tourism. The participants were encouraged to explore the various possibilities for incorporating elements of ICH into tourism. In the workshop not only did the many strengths and creativity of the cultural region’s actors emerge, but also the need to increase regular cooperation between different actors. The proposals highlighted the local strengths with a great tourism potential. Local elements could be used more effectively in communication and to develop tourism products around them. Joint planning and execution could add value to both cultural and tourism operators. At its best, incorporating cultural heritage into the economy can benefit both the tourism company and the community or cultural actor. As one participant put it: “With a bold and open-minded attitude, services from almost all fields can be combined with experiences of living heritage. This area has many traditions and strengths that can be continuously developed.
