🟠 The SUNBIO consortium successfully held its 6-month plenary meeting on December 10–11, 2024, at the 📍School of Naval Architects and Marine Engineering National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in Athens. ✅ Key Milestone Achieved: Defining the specifications and requirements for the hybrid Wave Energy Converter (WEC). 🏗️ Facility Tour: Partners explored NTUA’s specialized towing tank, capable of simulating waves up to 100 meters, providing critical insights for WEC design and testing. 🔜 Next Steps: Finalizing WEC design, conducting trials, and preparing for deployment near the OBSEA Observatory in Barcelona—ensuring continuous ecological monitoring and marine habitat protection well beyond 2027. 🔵 This meeting showcased the consortium’s collaborative spirit and commitment to advancing sustainable marine energy solutions. The 6-month plenary meeting of the Horizon Europe SUNBIO project was held at the School of Naval Architects and Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, 10-11th December 2024. The plenary meeting marked the achievement of the first important technical milestone, which concerned the specifications and requirements of the hybrid wave energy converter (WEC) to be designed and built during the project. The next step is to finalise the design and model the hybrid WEC, prior to the initial trials at the NTUA towing tank. Subsequently, the custom-built demonstrator will be installed and tested under actual operational conditions at the vicinity of the OBSEA Observatory near the coast of Barcelona during the last year of the project. The key aim is for the demonstrator system to remain operational well beyond the end of the project in May 2027, to protect the associated artificial marine habitat created, whilst continuing to monitor its evolution uninterruptedly. The implementation of cost-effective and detailed ecological monitoring of our seas and oceans through self-powered observatories and autonomous robotic networks will be critical towards improving our understanding of the current and future sustainability challenges we face, including the true impact level of different human activities. The SUNBIO project results will contribute towards assessing our capabilities of promoting marine habitat restoration, as well as offer new means to protect and monitor existing ones.

The kick-off meeting of NERITES project in Hannover, Germany. The Kick-Off Meeting of NERITES project took place in Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH) premises between 13th and 14th of February. The meeting was hybrid, with the partners of the project participating both in presence and virtually and planning the project’s first steps and activities. The 1st day session was dedicated to management issues and project partner’s participations. The 2nd day session included presentations of the WPs by the responsible partner for each one of them. 📣 The 2nd meeting of the NERITES project was successfully completed at the facilities of the University of Calabria (UNICAL) from July 4th to July 5th, 2024.
