To dive a bit deeper into this topic, our CEO Tomaz Bizjak has prepared a short Q&A with Aleksandra:
Q: You were in the past already performing various standard requirement implementations and certifications in other companies. What was the difference when a start-up vs. an established company does this?
A: For both types of companies, ISO 9001 can be a transformative process. A start-up builds a new system as foundation for growth and can be faster and more flexible in the process without the constraints of legacy practices, while established companies need to adapt the existing system, the process is usually slower due to complexity and may often require a culture shift.
Q: Would you recommend start-ups to implement it? Because they need to be agile, yet any standardization and processes usually has a negative impact on being lean and agile – that is anyway the problem of big corporations that are slow due to their internal processes and multi-level decision making.
A: I would. Start-ups tend to operate in growth modes, so ISO 9001 provides a framework that lets the company build a streamlined, flexible system based on their culture of adaptability, agility, and innovation and later scale their quality management practices as the business grows.
Q: What was the main challenge in obtaining the certification, and how long did it take?
A: The main challenge is to develop a system that works for us as a unique company with its own culture, resources, maturity and other industry specifics, so that it can truly add value to our organization, rather than impose a rigid framework that may not fit well with our business context and goals. We implemented it in approximately half a year.
Q: What would you recommend to those considering it?
A: Implementing any standardized management system can feel overwhelming however it can also result in significant competitive advantage, demonstrating your credibility and commitment to quality. If you are facing limited budget and resources, use external consultants, focus only on critical elements initially, and look into government incentives or grants to support you in the process.
