Empowering Filipinos with Online Safety & Media and Information Literacy (MIL)
Tungkol sa amin
BANTAYnet is an NGO with the purpose of providing education about Online Safety and Media Information Literacy (MIL), primarily to Filipinos in Filipino languages & English. Our material will be delivered in simplified & accessible posts or short videos on social media. The word “bantay” means beware, watch out, or be on guard in several Filipino languages, which is fitting to our mission. Founded in the UK, we have now fully moved our operations to Bohol, Philippines to be at the heart of the communities we are aiming to serve. As we continue to grow, we strive to involve as many Filipinos in our work wherever we can, to make sure our services are created by Filipinos for Filipinos as much as possible. This is just the beginning of our journey, which is why we are counting on your support to make it possible for us to create quality educational content in Filipino languages, to reach those who are most vulnerable to Online Exploitation! Have questions or interested in collaborating? Feel free to contact us—we’d love to connect!

🔍 Tech Reminder: Don't Trust AI Blindly! 🔍 At BANTAYnet, we’re strong advocates for embracing new technology, like AI, to make work more efficient and accessible. But here’s a reality check: AI is a tool—not a one-size-fits-all solution. While it can speed up processes, it still has limitations, and accuracy isn’t guaranteed. 🛠 The attached, real example, shows how AI can generate not only misleading data, but completely madeup information, as seen when ChatGPT made up a statistic! This highlights why we need to approach AI-generated information critically. It’s up to each of us to verify facts manually and ensure accuracy before sharing. AI might be powerful, but without human oversight, it can unintentionally spread misinformation. Let’s remember that while technology opens up opportunities, responsible use and informed decisions are key. Know what to ask, check your facts, and don’t let the convenience of AI replace due diligence. Let’s keep the internet a space for truth, not for shortcuts! 🌐💬 #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #Misinformation #MediaInformationLiteracy #BANTAYnet

Security vs. Privacy: We know they’re not the same, but explaining the difference to non-tech audiences can be a challenge. After hearing from tech and IT professionals who struggle to communicate this clearly to clients, we created a simple visual analogy in the typical BANTAYnet way: simple, bite-sized & accessible. This has been proven to make it easier for everyone to undertand. Let’s make online safety accessible to all, one clear explanation at a time. #PrivacyVsSecurity #ITSecurity #TechSimplified #ITRisk #MIL

Media & Information Literacy (MIL) is More Than Just Tech Skills. MIL and digital literacy are often oversimplified as just "knowing how to use digital technology". But MIL is so much more—it’s about empowering people to access, evaluate, and create information responsibly. This graphic from the MIL for ASEAN Network breaks down these competencies, showing what true digital literacy encompasses. While these skills are frequently emphasized for digital immigrants, digital natives need them too—just with tailored approaches. Let’s go beyond basic tech skills and foster critical thinking and responsible participation for all. #MediaLiteracy #DigitalLiteracy #MIL #InternetForGood

🌟 I’m excited to share that I recently completed the “Unlocking Media Literacy” Virtual Training Series (October 8-24, 2024), organized by the DCN Global (Digital Communication Network Global) and World Learning! The training was tailored to teach educators teaching Media Literacy. As BANTAYnet aims to be a key player in the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) space in the Philippines, I really appreciated how this training was tailored to Southeast Asia. The sessions were led by experts from our region and beyond, providing valuable insights that are extremely relevant to our work. In my quest for ongoing learning, I’m committed to better equipping myself to educate users, educators, parents, and other vulnerable groups about staying safe online and understanding the information we encounter every day. I gained great knowledge on HOW TO TEACH identifying fake news, enhancing critical thinking, and navigating the digital landscape effectively. A big thank you to DCN Global for accepting my application to join this FREE training filled with high-value content! I can’t wait to use what I’ve learned in my work with BANTAYnet, where we strive to empower individuals with knowledge about online safety and media literacy. Thanks to the organizers and fellow participants for such a fantastic learning experience! 💖 #MediaInformationLiteracy #ProfessionalDevelopment #DigitalCommunication #EducatingEducators

🌐Global Media & Information Literacy Week 2024🌐 To celebrate, we’ve created this short explainer video to help educators teach Media Information Literacy—and it's free for anyone to use! Did you know that, according to Pew Research, only 35% of American test subjects were able to correctly identify all the "opinion statements" mixed in with factual ones? 🤔 This is a key reason why #fakenews, misinformation, and disinformation spread so quickly online. 📰⚡ Watch the video and let’s empower people to better navigate the digital world! #GlobalMILWeek #MediaLiteracy #FactVsOpinion #Educators

Heartfelt congratulations to Michael Ethan Chiu, for successfully completing his 1-Month Paid Internship at BANTAYnet! In his brief time with us, he was able to show off his skills by quickly learning how to use video editing and animation software, as well as helping to get the filming process for our upcoming Online Course started! Ethan did a great job helping to tackle any problem solving challenges that came up with the steep learning curve we are all going through, since this is our first project of this kind. Although he is off to college, we are thrilled to keep him on as a part-time member of our Team, and look forward to his valuable contributions towards our organisation's mission, which is to spread educational content about #OnlineSafety and #digitalliteracy to the wider #Filipino public. We hope this is the first of many paid Internships that we can offer to young people starting out in their early professional careers. Huge thanks Ethan, and good luck at College Team BANTAYnet
