30 Years of Friends – our friends talk! Part Two.
Emmanuelle Werner managed our Alternative Care project in Cambodia from 2009/10, returning to Europe to run Friends Suisse until 2020.
She told us - ‘I have so many incredible memories, the laughs, craziness, changes (“What? We’re restructuring teams again?? Yes baby, the only constant at FI is change”). One experience deeply impacted me: as part of the Alternative Care project, we were seeking to develop partnerships with orphanages to encourage them to reintegrate children into their families and transition towards community-based centers.
One day, I visited an orphanage that was about to open, funded by foreigners: the building was brand new, the staff was in place, and the only thing missing were the children, whom the director planned to recruit from nearby provinces. For me, this was a clear illustration of how much the entire system needed to be rethought and how relevant and spot on our approach was.
I learned so much about innovation, flexible thinking, pragmatism without compromising on values, thinking out of the box, leadership, and vision. So many things that continue to inspire me today.’
Over to Renay Farrell, who was a ChildSafe Movement mainstay from July 2018 through December 2019 – ‘Happy 30th Anniversary to Friends-International, congratulations to Seb, the Board, Executive Team and all staff past and present. What an amazing milestone!
I’ll always treasure my time with Friends-International and ChildSafe. Having the opportunity to see the work of FI & CS really opened my eyes and heart to the challenges facing the most vulnerable people in Cambodia and the tireless work of all staff in helping children and families to have a better chance at life. My biggest takeaway will always be the friendships that I made. The very best people work at FI & CS. I remember riding my moto to work, surrounded by smiling Cambodians and feeling a sense of gratitude, love and being blessed to have the chance to live in the country and connect with the beautiful people of Cambodia.’
