#ArchitectureOfTheMonth - La Marina del Prat Vermell, a historic neighborhood in Barcelona undergoing constant transformation, faces an ambitious challenge: becoming a new benchmark for mixed-use development. The architectural project by VIVAS ARQUITECTOS, Pau Vidal, and Arquitectura Produccions reinterprets the relationship between three scales—city, community, and housing—through a design prioritizing connection, diversity, and habitability. While the neighborhood’s planning establishes a strong maximum volume, the proposal challenges this with a fragmented approach. Instead of a single monolithic block, the dwellings are divided into three independent volumes connected by a shared plinth. This arrangement responds to varying orientations and contexts, introducing porosity and visual richness to the urban landscape. The three volumes engage in dialogue with each other and the neighborhood, creating a diverse yet cohesive addition to the cityscape. #SelectedProject - Located in the picturesque coastal town of Todos Santos on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, Vipp Todos Santos stands as a tribute to the union of Danish and Mexican design. Led by renowned Mexican studio Pérez Palacios Arquitectos Asociados (PPAA), this project is Danish design brand Vipp’s first guesthouse outside of Europe and its tenth addition to a growing portfolio of accommodations that create a locally rooted and meaningful architectural experience. The natural setting of Todos Santos, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by fields of chiles, cacti, and desert vegetation, served as a fundamental inspiration for the design of the house. This area of Baja California is a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, known for its colonial charm, artistic traditions, and unique biodiversity. #ArchitectureOfTheMonth - The new middle school in Puos d'Alpago centers around a versatile agora, fostering innovative teaching and intercycle activities. Designed by Facchinelli Daboit Saviane Architecture, its "covered square" concept integrates four nuclei supporting a suspended volume, creating seamless indoor-outdoor spaces with a strong public vocation. WA: Can you describe the project to us? FDS: This school doubles as a civic center, opening its spaces to the community beyond school hours. Architecturally, it embodies the concept of a "covered square," with a suspended volume supported by four cores, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. WA: How does the design respond to the site? FDS: The Alpago basin's layered landscape, shaped by centuries of natural and productive use, inspired the design. The building's strong horizontality integrates harmoniously as a new anthropic layer amidst fields, trees, and mountains. #WorldBuildingOfTheWeek - From 1982 until 2019, visitors to the Missouri Botanical Garden entered through the grounds through the HOK-designed Ridgway Visitor Center. With the 40-year-old building unable to handle the garden's growing crowds, it was replaced by the Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center designed by Baltimore's Ayers Saint Gross. The architects answered a few questions about the project. WA: What is the inspiration behind the design of the building? ASG: Inspired by the Garden’s rich history and extensive botanical collection, the Visitor Center integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces to create a holistic visitor experience. This architectural approach not only reinforces the Garden’s mission but also ensures inclusivity and accessibility for all visitors. WA: What makes this project unique? ASG: Entering a new era, the Missouri Botanical Garden, a global leader in plant science research and one of the oldest botanical gardens in continuous operation, needed a new gateway for their more than one million annual visitors. The Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center represents a bold, transformative vision for the Garden and its mission “to discover and share knowledge about plants and their environment in order to preserve and enrich life.” Read about this project on World-Architects.com by following the https://lnkd.in/eDcsFWyH Photos: 1,3,4,5,6,7,8 Casey Dunn 2 Wesley Law #forqualityinarchitecture #waofficial #worldarchitects #architecture #architects #bestoftheweek #bestarchitecture #bestof

#SwissBuildingOfTheWeek – weberbrunner architekten have constructed a two-apartment house in Weiningen on a plot of land previously deemed unbuildable. Roger Weber explains how the project embodies a sustainable approach by integrating aesthetics, space efficiency, circularity, and social considerations into a holistic design. WA: What makes this project unique? RW: Residential Building H, located on a hillside in Weiningen near Zurich, transforms a once unbuildable plot with irregular dimensions and challenging topography into a model of climate-friendly construction, addressing Switzerland's growing land scarcity. WA: What is the inspiration behind this project? RW: The idyllic location and unique topography inspired the concept of creating a structure in harmony with the landscape. House H is embedded into the hillside, providing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. To enhance the connection to its surroundings, we used local and recyclable materials. #GermanBuildingOfTheWeek - The Stadlmann property in Freystadt stood empty and fell into disrepair for a long time. But the team from Kühnlein Architektur renovated the listed building and added a new section. Michael Kühnlein reports how the ensemble became an archive with an office and community hall. WA: What is special about this building project? MK: A narrow plot between Freystadt's market square and Wassergasse was reactivated after years of vacancy and neglect. We restored the city's oldest secular building, added a new structure, and enhanced the courtyard with open spaces, bringing new urban quality to Freystadt. WA: What is the inspiration behind this project? MK: Respecting the monument set the tone; the venerable building was to reclaim its place in Freystadt's monument ensemble. In the rear, we reinterpreted the historical barn type to moderately densify and strengthen Schwallgasse, where such buildings once stood. Preserving and harmonizing Freystadt's unique roofscape was also essential. DIVIA Award 2025 Nominees Announced! The nominees in the second DIVIA Award — the biennial award promoting diversity in architecture — have been announced: 25 women architects in more than 20 countries. This announcement comes one month after “Mind the Gap,” the first conference organized by Diversity in Architecture (DIVIA), took place at Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin. DIVIA's efforts to broadly promote diversity in architecture started with the recognition of women in the field, with Marta Maccaglia winning the inaugural DIVIA Award in 2023, and it continues with the 25 women nominated for the 2025 award. The 25 nominees, listed below, were determined by DIVIA's international Advisory Board, made up of 15 architects, designers, educators, and other experts who were asked to name “women architects recognized for their innovative design approaches in urban living spaces and impactful contributions to their societal contexts.” The jury will select five finalists, with that announcement coming next month, and then the winner, who will be announced at the DIVIA Award Ceremony in May 2025. 👏 Congratulations to all the nominees! #WorldBuildingOfTheWeek - The new Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw revealed itself during an inauguration in October, but the Thomas Phifer and Partners-designed building won't have its official grand opening until February 2025. The new Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Warszawie | Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, designed by New York architect Thomas Phifer, is, to put it simply, an elegant white bar. But to fully understand its architecture, it is essential to consider its position in the city. Plac Defilad (Parade Square) has been the de facto center of Warsaw ever since the Soviet Union built, in the mid-1950s, the Palace of Culture and Science on land that was once the heart of late 19th-century Polish capital.
