Our breakthrough sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology, aerobrew, will make affordable net-zero aviation a reality. The technology is innovative, highly scaleable and able to tap into future global renewable energy systems efficiently. Starting from renewable feedstocks including green hydrogen, driven by renewable electricity, and sustainably sourced CO2, for example from direct air capture, aerobrew™ provides an efficient route to large-scale production of e-kerosene, overcoming the scale up challenges and high costs of alternative e-fuels technologies. aerobrew™ is also compatible with the biogenic route whereby the carbon required for the process is derived from renewable and sustainable cellulosic biomass which, does not compete with the food chain (wood, miscanthus, etc.). With a high carbon conversion, high selectivity and a high overall SAF yield, aerobrew™ leads to attractive production economics and cost leadership. With a rapidly growing demand for SAF, aerobrew™ stands to contribute significantly to the decarbonisation of global aviation and to support the achievement of net zero 2050 targets.

We are excited to welcome Bettina Eberle as a new member of the Metafuels team! After successfully completing her internship, working with our technical and commercial teams, Bettina will now join us as Sustainability Engineer continuing the excellent work she has performed over the last months.
After five fulfilling months as an intern at PSI Laboratory for Energy Systems Analysis (LEA), I am excited to share that I have recently started my position as Sustainability Engineer at Metafuels! I’ll be working part-time while pursuing my Master’s degree. I will be focusing on life cycle assessment calculations, building on the work conducted during my internship, and supporting R&D efforts as a chemical engineer. I’m looking forward to contributing to and being part of Metafuels' exciting journey and shaping the future of aviation with sustainable aviation fuel. ✈️

PSI researchers, led by Marco Ranocchiari and Jörg Roth, want to facilitate the industrial production of sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) to help the #aviation industry ✈️ achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Together with a number of different partners, they are investigating, developing, and optimising several options for producing kerosene without 🛢️ oil. For example, in the three-year SynFuel initiative, together with the Empa and with financial support from the ETH Board. As one of the necessary steps, a pilot plant is currently being built on the PSI site together with the climate start-up Metafuels and the support from the Bundesamt für Energie BFE. This pilot plant should address the need to scale up SAF production which the International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates will reach 450 billion litres in 2050 to fully replace fossil kerosene. All parties involved hope that this project will inspire 💡 others to follow suit and initiate similar collaboration to achieve #carbon #neutrality 🌱:“First and foremost, such transfer projects between research and industry can point the way,” says Thomas J. Last week in Zürich, we had an inspiring breakfast discussion on the future of aviation with Metafuels 🇨🇭🛫. After Jacqueline van den Ende zoomed in on some of the most exciting themes in our portfolio, we had the pleasure of hearing about one of our innovative portfolio companies—Metafuels, based in Switzerland. CEO Saurabh KAPOOR presented their groundbreaking tech aimed at making affordable low-carbon aviation a reality with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). A big thank you to everyone who joined in the inspiring discussions, and special thanks to Thomas Adank for bringing us all together.
