Our CEO and Co-founder Eszter Kovács in this year's interview at Swiss Drone Competence Center explored the challenges and progress of integrating drones into traditional air traffic systems with Rocco Bustelli, Director at Riviera Airport, who shared insights into how decisions at the management and political levels are driving the competence center’s innovative approach. Integrating drones into airport operations is a complex undertaking, as Rocco explained: ☑️Bringing drones into the same airspace as helicopters and aeroplanes is a significant challenge, requiring careful coordination and planning. ☑️Successful integration means engaging with existing pilots to find the best solutions for cohabitation between drones and manned aircraft. ☑️This isn’t an overnight transition — it’s a gradual process that involves ongoing dialogue, testing, and adaptation. The goal is clear: to create an airspace where drones and traditional aircraft operate safely and effectively together. This effort is not just about technology but also about building trust and collaboration within the aviation community. 👉 What do you think? Can drones and aeroplanes truly share the skies? At this year’s ADW2024, our co-founder and CEO, Eszter Kovács, joined Manu Lubrano, INVOLI’s CEO and Co-Founder, to discuss a fascinating intersection of policy, technology, and sustainability: how evolving regulations in #Germany are reshaping air traffic management and reducing environmental impact. One notable example is Germany's new approach to addressing visual pollution caused by red blinking lights on wind turbines. These lights, essential for #aviation safety, are now required to remain off unless an #aircraft is detected nearby. This shift isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s a step forward in balancing safety and environmental preservation. Here’s how the technology works: ☑️ Advanced systems use real-time data to detect approaching aircraft and activate the turbine lights only when necessary. ☑️ By keeping lights off when not needed, the solution reduces visual pollution for nearby communities while maintaining safety standards. The broader impact goes beyond compliance. Improved air traffic awareness benefits #drones, enabling safer operations in shared #airspace and supporting the growing demands of unmanned aerial systems (#UAS). To date, about 400 receivers have been installed across Germany, mounted 150 meters above ground, providing visibility and coverage down to ground level. This collaborative effort showcases how technology can solve complex challenges, aligning with both #regulatory requirements and #sustainability goals. The drone industry’s wake-up call: Are we prepared for true scalability? The drone and aviation sectors are growing fast, but let’s face it – speed alone won’t cut it. The industry is standing at a key crossroads: Will it evolve into a scalable, sustainable powerhouse or remain stuck in fragmented, small-scale operations? At the Commercial UAV News in Las Vegas, Thilo Uebbert from Murzilli Consulting and Ulrich Amberg, CEO of SwissDrones, tackled this head-on. Their message was clear: Scaling BVLOS operations demands more than technology, requiring a complete rethink of infrastructure, skills, and regulations. Here’s what’s critical for unlocking the next phase of growth: ☑️ Scalable Systems: Technology is vital, but it must work and integrate seamlessly in real-world, diverse environments. ☑️ Aviation-Grade Expertise: Skilled teams trained to the highest aviation standards are non-negotiable. ☑️ Regulatory Alignment: Bold collaboration with industry and government is key to shaping a safety-first framework that fosters innovation. In our interview this year at ADW - Connecting Air Mobility Worldwide 2024, Eszter Kovács, CEO and Co-founder of DroneTalks, and Joe Darden, Director at Iridium explored the role of lightweight, low-power communication solutions in supporting drones and advanced aircraft. Iridium’s low-earth orbit (LEO) network and innovative 11-gram modem exemplify the technological advancements driving the industry forward. A LEO network consists of satellites orbiting much closer to Earth compared to traditional geostationary satellites (typically at altitudes of 500 to 2,000 kilometers). This proximity offers several advantages: ☑️Signals travel a shorter distance, making communication nearly instantaneous. ☑️LEO networks ensure connectivity even in remote or previously inaccessible areas. ☑️Ideal for dynamic operations like drone navigation and BVLOS missions. For industries like agriculture, logistics, and emergency response, this means drones can maintain reliable, real-time connections no matter where they operate. Iridium’s 11-gram modem is a breakthrough in drone technology. Why does its weight matter? ☑️A lighter modem allows for more efficient energy use, longer flight durations, or additional payload capacity. ☑️Lightweight modems are typically designed to consume less power, which is essential for extended missions or remote operations. ☑️Industries deploying large fleets of drones need compact, cost-effective solutions. A lightweight modem makes mass adoption feasible without compromising performance. The combination of LEO networks and lightweight modems is enabling drones to: ☑️Navigate precisely and safely, even in areas with poor ground-based communication infrastructure. ☑️Comply with regulatory requirements, such as Remote ID for air traffic management. ☑️Transmit critical data in real-time, essential for industries relying on drones for data collection or delivery. By understanding the technology behind LEO networks and lightweight modems, we can better appreciate how these innovations are driving advancements in BVLOS missions and autonomous drone operations. 👉 Want to learn more?
