The Bank was established on 1 July 1975, through an Act of Parliament (Bank of Botswana Act CAP 55:01) to support the country’s economic development through price and financial stability. The National currency, the Pula banknotes, and Thebe coin were issued into circulation on 23 August 1976, a day now known as Pula Day. VISION The Bank of Botswana (the Bank) aspires to be a world-class central bank with the highest standards of corporate governance and professional excellence. MISSION The Mission of the Bank is to contribute to the sound economic and financial wellbeing of the Country. The Bank seeks to achieve and maintain: • Price stability; • A safe, sound and stable financial system; • An efficient payments mechanism; • Public confidence in the National currency; • Sound international financial relations; and to provide: • Efficient banking services to its various clients; and • Sound economic and financial advice to Government.
