It is true that you learn even more than you know when you teach, which is why I was pleased when VISION SPRING INITIATIVES engaged me as a facilitator for a 2 day training out of their 3 days Storytelling Bootcamp. The theme was "Promoting Rights Through Advocacy using Storytelling," and under this theme, we addressed specifics including storytelling basics, narrative techniques, storytelling expressions and narrative development. On the advocacy arm, we delved into advocacy strategies, power mapping, and understanding the legal landscape particularly as is applicable in Lagos State, Nigeria. I believe in experiential learning, and so there was a lot of "doing" in class. Participants were divided into groups and engaged in hands-on activities including exploring storytelling forms right there in class and developing advocacy campaigns that focused on sexual and reproductive health and rights issues. Beyond them saying I almost "blew" their brains because they had to think through a lot of the individual and group work, if their feedback in the image with sticky notes is any indication, I'd say we collectively had a good AND impactful time. Thank you for the incredible work you continue to do, VSI, and for extending an invitation for me to be a part of it.
