At our graduation ceremony today, 🎤 Kai Dupe, Ed.D., Associate Professor of Computer Science at Skagit Valley College, shared invaluable thoughts on the importance of continuous learning. While he admired the drive for innovation within Nigeria, he emphasized the need to bridge the existing skill gaps. Drawing from his own experience, he stressed that staying in tech for the long haul requires a commitment to never stop learning. He encouraged graduates to seek deeper knowledge, not just relying on tools but understanding the fundamentals. He compared knowledge to a passport that must be renewed regularly to remain relevant in an ever-evolving industry.

We called it a year with the graduation ceremony of participants in our tech training here at Nithub. What a journey it has been, and we are proud to see them not just skilled, but ready to tackle real-world challenges. They’ve learned to use their knowledge to create solutions that matter, and we wish them the best as they take on the future.

Highlighting Collaboration and Innovation at CoRE AI - Cluster of Research Excellence in AI (CoRE AI) Africa Innovation Event! On November 21, 2024, I had the honour of participating in a panel discussion at the prestigious Uppsala University in Sweden, where we explored the critical role of cooperation between Africa and Europe. During the discussion, we emphasized: - The need to redesign PhD programmes to foster innovative research that drives economic, social, and environmental progress. - The importance of equipping research students with entrepreneurial skills to enhance research commercialisation. - The value of knowledge-sharing through bi-directional mobility programmes between the Global South and North. It was inspiring to hear the insightful contributions of my co-panelists: Kristian Männik (co-founder of Sinch ), Cecilia Wikström, Omokhoba Blessing Yama, and Otema Yirenkyi. Special thanks to Ranjula Bali Swain for moderating the session so brilliantly! I also had the pleasure of visiting Twelve Football, a sports data company co-founded by Prof. David Sumpter—a remarkable example of research commercialization and job creation through spin-off startups. My conversations with Marcus Lådö and Lars Ekman were incredibly enlightening. A big thank you to Kajsa Hallberg Adu, Ph.D. and David Sumpter for organizing these impactful events. It was a pleasure connecting with Carolina Wählby, Id-maria Sintorm, Petter Knagge (Hammar) , Petter Ranefall, Beimnet Girma, Ochukut Selina Atwani, Emily Morgan and many other brilliant minds. This experience reinforced the power of collaboration in driving innovation and global impact. 🌍✨ #Innovation #Collaboration #ResearchCommercialization #AfricaInnovation #PhDRedesign #KnowledgeSharing University of Lagos Nithub

Adedamola Adejumo is a 400-level Computer Science student at the University of Lagos, a software engineer, and an active member and tutor in the Nithub community. While Adedamola has always been interested in tech and programming, his first experience with community-guided learning came through Nithub. He joined the Nitdev training program in 2022 as a pioneer member, which he describes as a catalyst for his tech journey. Adedamola found the Nithub community both supportive and challenging, with the people around him motivating him to continuously improve. After completing his training, he became a backend tutor at Nithub, which allowed him to give back to the community by mentoring and training hundreds of aspiring backend engineers at the hub. In June 2024, Adedamola landed a summer software engineering internship at Goldman Sachs, London, which he described as a pivotal moment in his career after facing several rejections. Beyond technical skills, the experience taught him valuable lessons in communication. He highlighted Goldman’s culture of collaboration, where asking questions, helping others, and openly sharing ideas is encouraged. This helped him build confidence in his ideas and their value. Adedamola is driven by a desire to solve problems using tech and software solutions. He is particularly interested in addressing challenges in the finance sector. He believes the intersection of finance and technology holds the potential to create significant global impact. For him, Goldman Sachs is the ideal place to contribute to this vision, and receiving a return offer for a summer analyst role in 2025 is something he is truly grateful for. Adedamola hopes his story inspires others to stay consistent, not to be discouraged by rejections, and to trust that their efforts will eventually pay off. Outside of his passion for tech, Adedamola is an avid Chelsea fan, a video game enthusiast, and, surprisingly, a K-drama lover.
