In June, our QA Lead Bettu S joined the Namma Shivamogga team - made up of the Forest Department, local villagers, and school children - in a drive to enhance groundwater conservation and green cover by planting trees. In line with our commitment to sustainability, one of the trees planted during this event was donated by Pollen. We're always grateful for the opportunity to do our part, and we thank Bettu and each of our incredible team members who go out of their way to further contribute towards our goal of creating a zero-waste world. Did you know that liquid shampoo only came about in 1927? About 80% of the contents of a current shampoo bottle is water. This works out to ~14,400 liters of water per 40 foot shipping container, which makes one wonder how much water in plastic bottles we're shipping around the world. But what's the alternative to liquid shampoos and soaps? And are they worth changing our hygiene routines for? Our COO Michael Seiji Schindler offers his thoughts and shares his own sustainability habits in the post below. Learn more about Pollen, your liquidation OS and AI co-pilot for brands around the world here: https://www.pollen.tech/ #Pollen #SustainableLiquidation #Liquidation #ExcessInventory
~80% of a #shampoo bottle is #water 🌊 . More water in products means larger #plastic #bottles, which requires more space ↔ and are heavier 🏋♀️ to ship 🚢 . It’s amazing when one zooms out… We are basically #shipping #water #all #over #the #world in the form of #consumer #products that are in large plastic bottles in millions of 40 ft containers. How did we get here? Where do we go? #Background: ✴ #Shampoo originally looked very different - generally powders or bars. That changed in 1927, when Hans Schwarzkopf invented #liquid #shampoo. At that time, however, liquids were expensive 💸 to #transport. After WWII, #consumerism 🛍 surged and drove an #adoption #of #plastics, which replaced its heavier counterparts - glass, ceramics, wood , and metal - as the #packaging #material of choice. A pathway for #water #solvent #products was born 🐣 as plastics were durable 💪 and light 🕊 to ship, lowering costs 💰 whilst giving the consumer something “new.” #Napkin #Math - 1 x 40 ft shipment = ~14,400 Liters of water 😱: ✴ 40 foot container: Transports ~18,000 Shampoo 900ml bottles which weigh ~1.1 KG / Bottle summing to ~19,800 KG in shipping weight. Let’s say ~10% is packaging, so ~18,000 KG of shampoo formulation and of that ~20% is active ingredients 💊 (~3,600 KG) and 80% is water 🚰 (~14,400 KG)… That’s about ~16 tons of water / ~14,400 liters / ~3,800 gallons. Imagine stacked cargo ships and then ask yourself “is all of that mainly water?.” 🤔 #What #to #do? ✴ #Standards - #Demand #forces 💳 are too strong 💪, so #legislation 🏛 has a role to influence changes in production 🏭 and end of life 💀 accountabilities. #Extended #Producer #Responsibility (EPR) should steer behavior, rewarding the “right” choices ☑. Producers, economically, don’t want to deal with #liabilities 📉 for #end #of #life #products. ✴ #Awareness - #Consumers 👨👩👧👦 have a role but we've been trained 👩🏫 to use gels, lotions, and other water solvent formulas. #Product #green / #sustainability #scores 🚦 are emerging but how will they take water weight and transportation into consideration - which is a lot☝? ✴ #Consumer - It comes down to #value 💵 , #access 🏪 , and #choice 🛍 . A shampoo bar is equivalent to ~3 bottles of liquid shampoo 🎉 . The value is there ✅ but communicating benefits is hard 🔴. Access and distribution exist ✅ but there are limited choices to date 🔎 - widening adoption barriers. I’ve made changes - #powdered #shampoo (lathers just fine 👌) and #bar #soaps. They last much longer ⏳ . At Pollen, the worst outcome is #business #waste when #unsold #inventory 📦 is incinerated 🔥 or filling landfills ⛰ . We work with #global #producers and #buyers to minimize this and get that product into consumers’ hands 👐. #startup #ESG #FMCG #innovation #singapore #brands #data #sustainability
Advice | Shampoos and soaps are mostly water. Here’s why you should buy them without it.
