Yesterday afternoon, I received my Certificate of Internship for the #DiscoverMHA internship programme, marking the completion of my month-long internship with the Ministry of Home Affairs Singapore. During this internship, I was attached to the SGSecure Programme Office (SSPO), a department under the Joint Operations Group. The focus of my project was to develop creative engagement tools that could be implemented during Community Response Roundtable (CRRT) sessions. These tools were designed to promote, reinforce and enrich the SGSecure message, ultimately helping to better prepare communities for crises, especially terrorist attacks. I worked with Rachel Toh and the full-time officers to generate ideas, conceptualise and design prototypes. We developed three sets of engagement tools: an icebreaker activity for Year 1 CRRTs; a pre-discussion engagement tool for Year 2 CRRTs, and a post-discussion reflection tool for Year 3 CRRTs. Additionally, we liaised with external vendors to procure the necessary materials required for the prototypes. On the topic of CRRTs, I had the rare opportunity to observe the Pioneer-Telok Blangah Year 2 CRRT session. Through this experience, I learned how various community leaders can establish communication channels during peacetime and use them to disseminate important information during emergencies. It was especially interesting to listen to the ideas raised by community leaders during the tabletop exercises, and it was heartening to witness their collaborations during the project discussions. Surprisingly, my biggest takeaway came in the final minutes of my internship, when I had to present a month's worth of work to CRRT vendors. After several rounds of internal reviews, I expected their feedback to be positive. However, they raised many concerns about the feasibility of our activities, which was a stark contrast to what I expected. This experience taught me that even the most interesting ideas may not always be practical in reality, and that multiple rounds of testing and adjustments are necessary before a project can be successfully implemented. This is a lesson I will keep in mind for future projects. Overall, I found this internship experience to be extremely fulfilling. While developing the deliverables provided me with valuable insights into creating impactful engagement tools, the more important lesson I learned was that every one of us can contribute to the SGSecure national movement by becoming prepared citizens. It is only through our collective efforts that we can keep Singapore safe and secure. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Home Team Scholarship Centre, Human Resource Division, for organising this internship programme for secondary school and junior college students and graduates. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to my supervisors Gladys Chang and Joanna Loke, as well as to Director of SSPO Wilbur Sim for making us feel so welcome throughout our internship!

Had an insightful breakfast chat with our Singapore Police Force officers. We had a chat about the use of technology in their everyday work, and I also addressed questions on recent policy changes. MHA HR was also present to address appraisal and career progression enquiries. I thank our officers for their passion and dedication. Ministry of Home Affairs Singapore

[Strengthening Collective Resilience] I had a valuable exchange with South Africa’s Deputy Minister, Prince Zolile Burn-Ncamashe, on the country’s priorities for the G20 Disaster Risk Reduction working group. Its leadership and vision for a safer and more humane world is inspiring. Singapore fully supports South Africa’s commitment in this area and is determined to work together to strengthen our collective resilience. Ministry of Home Affairs Singapore #G20 #DisasterReady

[Sharing Singapore’s Efforts in Disaster Risk Reduction] I had the opportunity to share Singapore’s efforts in disaster risk reduction with Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, Mr. Kamal Kishore. It was inspiring to discuss our initiatives, from community preparedness to strengthening financial resilience for disasters in the region. A big thank you to the United Nations for its impactful work in disaster risk reduction – your efforts are invaluable in helping communities worldwide prepare, respond and recover. I visited 3rd SCDF Division HQ and Yishun Fire Station on Christmas Day and was most happy to meet COL Lim Beng Hui, Commander, 3rd SCDF Division HQ, MAJ Gan Chea Hui, Commander, Yishun Fire Station, the Rota Commander on duty and his men. I had a chat with them at the Yishun Fire Station’s watch room and understood better their routes for the 8-15 min response times and the types of emergencies they have had to respond to. Yishun Fire Station apart from taking care of the residents of Yishun, also look after the Sembawang and Senoko areas and these industrial sites require close coordination with the local Emergency Response Teams. I thank our SCDF teams for keeping us safe and secure every day, every season of the year. Ministry of Home Affairs Singapore Singapore Civil Defence Force

[Promoting Desistance, Uplifting Lives] A focus area of M3 is to prevent offending and re-offending through supporting offenders, ex-offenders, and their families. To achieve this, Ministry of Home Affairs works closely with Mendaki, MESRA, Fitrah and many Malay/Muslim organisations (MMO) on various initiatives. As we celebrate five years of creating greater impact for the Malay/Muslim community through M3’s work, we are working on achieving greater heights. The three MMO Rehabilitation Network project groups are identifying ways to strengthen support for vulnerable families, offenders and ex-offenders with no or poor family support, as well as prevent offending among youths. Let us journey together towards a community of success. I highly encourage more organisations to collaborate with MMO Rehabilitation Network partners to support these individuals and their families. Last Friday, HTX celebrated its 5th anniversary with not one, but two events! In the morning, Xponents participated in a symbolic "dash" to HQ from eight satellite offices, mirroring how HTX was first formed in 2019 by bringing together talents from the various Home Team Departments and the Ministry of Home Affairs Singapore. Later, over 1,500 Xponents gathered at Marina Bay Sands for a fun-filled dinner and dance themed "Hands Across HTX". The event highlighted our journey in enhancing Singapore's safety and security, as well as showcased the many innovations we have developed to exponentially empower the Home Team over the last five years. We’d like to extend a big THANK YOU to all Xponents, partners and stakeholders--we wouldn’t have reached this milestone without your support. Here’s to another five fruitful and eventful years ahead! 🚀 Read the web story here: go.gov.sg/htxturnsfive #HTXsg #5thAnniversary #OneHomeTeam

Happy to attend the Security Industry Conference, as we celebrated the industry’s progress and look to the future.   The theme for this year’s conference is “Smart Security: Future-Proofing Your Organisation”. Since we launched the refreshed Industry Transformation Map in 2022, we have made operations more efficient with greater integration of technology, focused less on headcount-based models with outcome-based contracting, and improved training to equip security officers with updated competencies. We have also improved security officers’ welfare with the Progressive Wage Model wage schedule.   Ministry of Home Affairs Singapore will continue working closely with our tripartite partners and drive industry transformation.
