Horizon Europe: Strategies for just and equitable transitions in Europe

About us

ST4TE projects adopts a multidimensional approach to study the relationship between the green, digital and twin transition (TT) and inequalities. The project aims to investigate the impact of the TT on inequalities among individuals and territories and explore how existing inequalities affect the transition paths creating cycles of inequalities. ST4TE uses both quantitative methods (econometrics, machine-learning and agent-based modelling) and qualitative methods (narrative interviews, case studies and workshops) to analyse different patterns of inequalities and envisage custom made policies to counterbalance the unequal effects of the TT. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101132559.

  • Beneath the surface of the Green and Digital Transitions lie structural inequalities that can deepen existing divides. In this final post of our series (4/4), we explore examples of how access to financing, political influence, and technology often favour some groups over others. Without equitable access to green financing, for example, smaller businesses and lower-income households may struggle to adopt sustainable solutions. Similarly, policy influence often aligns with wealthier regions, potentially side lining those in greater need. ST4TE seeks to illustrate these structural gaps, advocating for policies that make the Twin Transition accessible to all. 👉 Check out our carousel to learn more. #ST4TE #ST4TEProject #TwinTransition #GreenTransition #DigitalTransition #Inequalities

  • The impacts of the Green and Digital Transitions vary widely by location, creating distinct geographical inequalities. In this third post of our series (3/4), we explore examples of how regions can be at risk of falling behind in the race to adapt. Urban areas often have better infrastructure to support digital and green initiatives, while many rural regions face obstacles like limited resources and slower digital development. Climate risks also hit certain regions harder, demanding tailored adaptation measures. ST4TE examines these geographical divides, aiming to build evidence-based support systems that address unique regional challenges. 👉 Click through our carousel for a closer look. #ST4TE #ST4TEProject #TwinTransition #GreenTransition #DigitalTransition #Inequalities

  • As the Green and Digital Transitions reshape our economies and societies, some social barriers could deepen. This second post in our series (2/4) highlights examples of how the Twin Transition risks amplifying existing social inequalities. From education to employment, disparities in access can exclude key groups from the benefits of these shifts. Marginalised communities, underrepresented groups, and those lacking digital or green skills face unique challenges. ST4TE combines data analysis with personal narratives to identify these social barriers, paving the way for inclusive policies and fairer opportunities. 👉 Explore our carousel to learn more. #ST4TE #ST4TEProject #TwinTransition #GreenTransition #DigitalTransition #Inequalities

  • The Twin Transition – both green and digital – is reshaping how we live, work, and consume, but its benefits don’t necessarily reach everyone equally. This first post in our series (1/4) explores examples of how economic inequality can widen as access to resources and technologies varies. The Twin Transition brings opportunities, but also risks: high-skill roles are in demand, while automation may limit options for low-skilled workers. At the same time, the cost of sustainable products keeps green choices out of reach for many. Through ST4TE, we are mapping these disparities and translating data into actionable insights to help reduce economic divides during the transition. 👉 Check out our carousel for a deeper dive. #ST4TE #ST4TEProject #TwinTransition #GreenTransition #DigitalTransition #Inequalities

  • 🌍 Last week, ST4TE joined the OECD World Forum on #Wellbeing in Rome, joining forces with our Horizon Europe sister projects - READJUST, MERGE, and Fitter-EU - to explore how the Twin Transition can create a more inclusive and sustainable future. The forum provided a valuable platform to discuss pressing challenges and share our project’s focus areas, including: 👉 Mapping green, digital, and twin technological capabilities to understand regional disparities 👉 Examining how the Twin Transition impacts inequalities across skills, occupations, and industries 👉 Making targeted policy recommendations to support more equitable pathways toward green and digital futures Thank you to everyone who engaged with us at the event! 🌱 If you want to learn more about our project, visit our website at www.st4te.eu #OECDWellbeing #OECDForum #JustTransitions #Sustainability #HorizonEU #EUResearch #ST4TE #ST4TEProject #TwinTransition #GreenTransition #DigitalTransition

  • We’re happy to be at the 7th OECD - OCDE World Forum on Well-Being (Nov 4-6), together with our sister projects at our collaborative booth. This is a great opportunity to explore how ST4TE, READJUST, FITTER-EU, and MERGE are working towards sustainable and inclusive societal transformation across Europe. Here’s a brief overview of the projects: 🌍 READJUST: Addressing inequalities from the twin transitions, focusing on sectors like mobility and agri-food. 🔍 Fitter-EU: Creating a predictive tool to help policymakers anticipate and address the impacts on vulnerable groups. 🤝 MERGE: Bridging diverse approaches to well-being and inequality, with co-creation workshops involving key stakeholders. 🌱 ST4TE: Examining the drivers and outcomes of the twin transitions to promote greener, fairer societies. Join us at our booth to discuss our projects and their impact! #OECDForum #WellBeing #Sustainability #InclusiveGrowth #SocialTransformation #READJUST #FITTER #MERGE #ST4TE

🌍 Meet MERGE at the 7th OECD Forum on Well-being 4-6th November 2024 in Rome! MERGE, in collaboration with READJUST, Fitter-EU and ST4TE, will be hosting a booth throughout the three days of the forum. If you're attending, we’d love to connect—stop by to say hello! 👋 We’ll be eager to share about the deliverables of the first year of our project. Our advocacy paper "A European Agenda To Navigate Uncertain Times – How to steer the EU towards wellbeing for all now and in the future" will also be discussed at our morning session on the 6th Nov. This is an exciting chance to dive into this year’s achievements and exchange ideas about approaches to measuring sustainable and inclusive wellbeing. Looking forward to meaningful conversations and new connections! See you there! OECD - OCDE #OECDForum #OECD #Wellbeing  Thank you READJUST and EURICE – European Research and Project Office GmbH for our beautiful poster design!

  • In our recent posts, we've explored the Green and Digital Transitions – two transformative forces reshaping how we live, work, and engage with the world. But are these transitions really distinct, or happening simultaneously? 🍃💻 This is why the concept of the Twin Transition is so important. It reflects the understanding that the green and digital transitions are everywhere and for everyone – they are twins. As Alasdair Reid at the European Future Innovation System (EFIS) Centre shares: "For a citizen, the twin transition means living in a world where digital technology is increasingly integrated into daily life (smart homes, digital services, online healthcare), while also benefiting from greener practices (clean energy, sustainable transportation, reduced pollution)." Ideally, the green and digital transitions reinforce each other. For instance, digital innovations can drive greener practices, such as AI-optimized traffic management or advanced recycling technologies. But sometimes these transitions clash – for example, digital systems demand more electricity and produce waste, and the resource-intensive production of digital devices can undermine sustainability efforts. As part of the ST4TE project, we assess how these transitions influence each other and explore how their parallel roadmaps can merge into a cohesive policy framework. We also examine the inequalities that arise from these transitions and their interactions.
