Jan Žabka, Klára Filipová and Simona Janíková are all experienced journalists from the Moravian-Silesian Region in Czechia. Back in 2023 they wanted to do something about the fact that there were almost no local investigative media catering to a local audience. With European Commission funding and strategic support from IMS (International Media Support) they founded the media start up Okraj.cz. One year in their journalism have focused on topics such as housing, environment and politics, and people come to them with ideas on what to report on. Value-driven public interest journalism and content that reaches and caters to diverse populations, promotes diversity, equity and inclusion as well as challenges entrenched power structures are the lifeblood of democracy. At the end of the day, IMS believe that public interest media should be viewed as a public good in the same way as health services, physical infrastructure and education. IMS Business viability adviser Iryna Vidanava has worked with Okraj and other media to iterate and maximise on new tech innovations. In the video below she explains more about that work. 🌍 Last but not least, meet the group mentored by Jonathan Moens — an award-winning independent journalist based in Rome, reporting on science, global health and climate change, among other topics. We’ll be sharing more soon about the stories this group is working on. But first, let's complete our round of introductions: Alexander Durie: A multimedia journalist, writer and photographer based between Marseille and London. He covers issues at the intersection of human rights and culture in Europe and the MENA region. Dafni Karavola: A data journalist and visual investigator based in Athens, with a background in architectural engineering. She is interested in exploring topics at the intersection of journalism and space. Goldy Levy: A podcast producer, host and writer currently based in Madrid. With a background in communication and literature as well as a master’s in Journalism, her work centers on the rights of nature and feminism. The group's resulting stories will focus on communities affected by pollution, new laws or climate change. The Magmatic School of Environmental Journalism is made possible thanks to the support of Journalismfund Europe.

🚨 Arming the world: Rheinmetall’s secretive ammunition factory program Over the last decade, Rheinmetall has established itself as a giant in the global defence industry. #Germany’s leading arms company is a major supplier to #Ukraine and regularly promotes its business with NATO nations. Its public profile was amplified in the summer after it became a ‘Champion Partner’ of Bundesliga football club Borussia Dortmund. But the company is involved in many more deals than its corporate communications would have you believe. Rheinmetall has quietly built a parallel business, one where its clients rarely feature in its press releases. Through a subsidiary in #SouthAfrica, the company has been discreetly supplying ammunition factories and machinery to customers far beyond the confines of NATO. Among the known clients are states that are linked to extensive human rights abuses and that supply ammunition to Russia. Significantly, the deals are free from German export regulations. Our newest investigation examines this secretive business, revealing new business deals conducted by the company via its little-known South African operation. The findings are published with media partners including ZEIT ONLINE (Germany), Partizán (Hungary), TPI - The Post Internazionale (Italy), infoLibre.es (Spain) and PT Tempo Inti Media Tbk (Indonesia).
