🔔 New in our #EMFA Observatory! The recently introduced 'media plurality test' under Article 22 of the European Media Freedom Act represents a key step in safeguarding media pluralism and editorial independence in the face of growing market concentration. 🔎 In our latest blog post, Pier Luigi Parcu and Roberta Carlini dive into the rationale, design, and implications of this new provision. In particular, they highlight the partial inclusion of #online platforms in its scope, and the possibility to consider structural safeguards to media pluralism and editorial independence as a decisive condition for the approval of a defensive merger. They also highlight several open questions. 💡 Read the full analysis here: https://lnkd.in/e-W--hxM

"Curiosity", answered someone when asked what the biggest takeaway they pocketed from the #Voices Festival was. Leaving an event with a strong desire to explore or learn more is perhaps one of its greatest successes 🙌 Before Croatia, Voices kicked off in Florence in March 2024 and gathered over 1300 people. We cannot wait to discover what will be the takeaways sparked in Zagreb on 28 February - 1 March 2025 📅 ➡️ Sessions will explore pressing topics like AI in journalism, disinformation, journalist safety, media literacy, elections' integrity, EU media legislation, digital parenting, and more. 🎉 Today, we’re celebrating a remarkable milestone! Our #MPMbook 📚 marks 10 years of research for the Media Pluralism Monitor (MPM) project. With 36 authors and 13 chapters, the book might seem daunting, but don’t let the numbers intimidate you! Our authors and editors worked tirelessly to make complex, scientific content accessible to everyone, because the challenges they address impact us all. 🔎 What’s inside? We take a holistic approach to assessing media markets, examining not just the market dimension but also critical issues like political independence, diversity and inclusion, and more. 📖 The journey of the MPM is one of constant learning. When we began, we never imagined how deeply questions of media freedom and journalist safety would resonate across Europe. But the challenges we face today are more complex than ever. 🚨 The stakes are also higher than ever: political pressures and physical threats persist, digital platforms hold unprecedented power, and AI is reshaping the way information is created and shared. The complexity of these issues is staggering — but so is the urgency to address them: the very health of our democracies depend on it. 💡 Now, back to the book! Read it, discuss it: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d_Rf-tMw #MediaFreedom #JournalismMatters
