About us

IPIFF is an EU non-profit organisation which represents the interests of the insect production sector towards EU policymakers, European stakeholders and citizens. Composed of more than 80 members, IPIFF promotes the use of insects and insect-derived products as top tier source of nutrients for human consumption and animal feed. IPIFF's main mission is to promote the wider use of insects as a complementary or new source of protein for human consumption and animal feed through a continuous dialogue with the European institutions (i.e. the European Commission, the EU Member States authorities, the European Parliament and the European Food Safety Authority). Notably, IPIFF centres its activities around advocating for appropriate EU legislation applicable to insect production.

  • As we strive for a more sustainable future, it’s crucial to consider all aspects of our lifestyle—including the impact of our beloved pets. 🐈 🐶 Did you know that switching to alternative proteins in pet food can significantly reduce its carbon footprint? 🦗 According to the BBC article below, #insects are a game-changer! Insects offer a high feed-to-meat conversion rate, can be reared on food waste, and require far fewer resources to produce. At IPIFF, we champion the potential of insects to revolutionise pet food sustainability. Not only are they packed with nutrition, but they also align with the principles of a circular economy by reducing food waste. Switching to insect-based pet food isn’t just a choice for the planet; it’s a choice for innovation, responsibility, and a greener tomorrow. Stay tuned in the upcoming weeks, as we expect some major updates! https://lnkd.in/eVGPREGa IPIFF (International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed) BBC News

  • 🐾 Pet superfoods: Tasty, Nutritious, and Sustainable! 🌍   The pet market in Europe is booming, with its market size reaching USD 5.75 billion in 2023 and projected to double by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 8.24%. This growth brings a rising demand for nutritious, sustainable, and innovative pet food solutions—and insect-enriched products are emerging as a game-changer. 🦗✨   Why insects? They're a nutritional powerhouse: ✅ High-Quality Protein: Insects like black soldier fly larvae, crickets, and mealworms offer 55–76% crude protein, essential amino acids, and 10–50% healthy fats. ✅ Digestibility: With rates up to 90%, they’re perfect for pets with sensitive stomachs. ✅ Vitamins & Minerals: Rich in B vitamins, iron, zinc, and calcium for overall health. And it’s not just about nutrition. Insects are a sustainable choice: 🌱 Low Resource Use: Farming insects requires less land, water, and feed than livestock. 🌎 Reduced Emissions: Insects produce minimal greenhouse gases and help upcycle organic waste, contributing to a circular economy. 💡 Scalability: Insects can be farmed locally, stabilizing supply chains and reducing environmental impact.   But that’s not all—insects are hypoallergenic and ideal for pets with food sensitivities. They’re also versatile, used in various forms (powders, oils, or whole), making them a premium option for pet food and treats.   As the pet food industry faces the challenge of balancing high-quality nutrition with sustainability, insect-based ingredients provide a viable and science-backed solution.    What are your thoughts on this innovative approach? Let us know below! 👇 #Sustainability #PetFoodInnovation #InsectProtein #PetHealth #FutureOfFood #IPIFF

  • Last week, the European Food Forum celebrated its 5th anniversary, and IPIFF's Deputy Secretary-General, Steven Barbosa, had the pleasure of attending the high-level event in Brussels. The European Food Forum is an independent, politically led non-partisan multistakeholder forum founded and governed by Members of the European Parliament. The forum aims to promote the civil dialogue on sustainable food systems between policymakers, food supply chain actors, civil society organisations, research and academia with the view to increasing transparency amongst all stakeholders involved in the agri-food chain. At this year's anniversary, the main topics included growth, innovation, as well as the importance of the dialogue between stakeholders to shape the agri-food system. Besides the participation of different Members of the European Parliament taking part in the governing of the European Food Forum, Seth Meyers, Chief Economist at the United States Department of Agriculture, delivered one of the keynotes. Mr Meyers addressed the importance of the EU-US agricultural relations. The EU insect sector can have a key role in the agri-food chain with the provision of animal feed, food products or organic soil fertiliser, strengthening EU farmers' resilience, and ensuring a level-playing field in the agri-food system. • Last week, IPIFF's Secretary-General Christophe Derrien and Scientific Advisor Zeynep Sinangil attended the consortium meeting for the PPS Insects/Packaging Materials project, coordinated by Wageningen University.   The high-level meeting presented an excellent opportunity to engage in insightful discussions with partners, focusing on innovative approaches to further enhance sustainability practices. We we happy to discuss the benefits of insects and their potential to contribute to Europe's resilient agri-food systems.   Following the meeting, the consortium had the chance to visit the Nijsen Company, one of the project partners. It was inspiring to witness first-hand their work on advancing sustainable practices within this collaborative initiative.   At IPIFF, we’re thrilled to be part of this impactful project, and look forward to sharing more updates and insights in the upcoming months. • Earlier this week, IPIFF's Deputy Secretary-General, Steven Barbosa, attended the EPP Congress of European Young Farmers, bringing together around 500 participants, with many young farmers from all over Europe, while the high-level event also attracted various Members of the European Parliament as speakers. The Congress addressed key challenges, such as water management and innovation, to ensure a resilient and sustainable EU agriculture. Moreover, attendees shared that generational renewal in agriculture is indeed a major challenge, considering that the number of farmers has decreased by around 30%, complemented by the fact that 31% of European farmers are above 65 years old. We truly believe that the EU insect sector can have a determinant role in increasing the generational renewal in agriculture. EU insect farming activities create economic opportunities by bridging existing agri-food chains and developing new segments, encompassing various applications—including human nutrition, animal feed, and soil fertiliser. Through these initiatives, we contribute to the creation of green jobs in rural areas, fostering a diverse skill set and a range of professional qualifications.
