  • Seminar “Geotechnics in Maritime Works - Learning from Experience”   At HAEDES we don’t work in silos, we pursue to actively listen and engage with valuable contributions from experts of a given field – this is the core premise of innovation and continuous creation. As such, Francisco Bastos attended the seminar "Geotechnics in Maritime Works - Learning from Experience," taking place on 2nd and 3rd December (2024) at Port of Leixões.   The initiative was organized by CPGT (Portuguese Commission for Geotechnics in Transport) through its Working Group 2 (Port Geotechnics), in collaboration with CPMT (Portuguese Commission for Ground Improvement) of the SPG (Portuguese Geotechnical Society), being sponsored by us.   This event is a meaningful opportunity to reflect on lessons from the past while exploring future trends and potential in the maritime and port sectors.   #portlogistics #inspiration #network #geotechnics

At HAEDES we enable independent, creative & qualitative engineering & consultancy for natural waters at sea, rivers and cities. We tackle the cause of problems, not the consequences. Weprovide tailored solutions and co-create for the shared well-being of society, environment and planet. Believing in the added value of being inspired by Nature and its regenerative strength, we experiment to weave the silos conditioning us. To elevate our consciousness, activities and daily endeavours. This means we assert expertise but foster knowledge transfer. Acknowledge a healthy ego and foster ownership. Transact based on reciprocity and added value. Depart from linear and mechanistic approaches into complex and systemic thinking, underlying a regenerative way of working and interacting. This also means that we - as engineers, scientists, technical experts, … - operate in the building blocks of societal infrastructure and natural world but also address and share what enriches our soul: true connection through nature, poetry, painting or music. We are individuals and one living ecosystem where no separation is needed. Sharing what touches, amazes and inspires us, is an inherent part of the way we work. Interconnectedness is part of the HAEDES Soul. #regenerativeleaderschip #connectivity #sharing #systemthinking #Soul

🌿 Milestone Achieved: AquaForest Takes Root! 🌿 At AquaForest, impactful consultancy means transforming insights into tangible, lasting change. We're enthousiastic to share the creation of the AquaForest island — a 50-hectare sanctuary crafted from reclaimed sediments, soon to become a thriving mangrove forest! 🌱 As a trusted partner, we've collaborated with partner, authorities and stakeholders to bring this vision to life. Leveraging our HAEDES NESEV ecosystem services analysis tool, we assessed the anticipated social and economic impact of this new ecosystem on the Guayaquil delta and the El Morro Natural Park. 🌎 A heartfelt thank you to our partners to take us along: G-STIC: Global Sustainable Technology & Innovation Community, Vlaamse overheid, IUCN, Mantis Consulting, South Pole, Jan De Nul Group, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, University of Antwerp, Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral, Fundacion Calisur. #sustainability #ecosystemrestoration #AquaForest #mangroves #Guayaquil #Ecuador

#JDNproject • We built a 50-hectare mangrove island from scratch in Ecuador. Did you know mangroves can store up to four times more carbon than tropical forests? They serve as water filters, are hotspots for biodiversity and protect coasts from erosion. But since 1980, 50% of mangroves have disappeared in Ecuador. That's why we developed AquaForest, together with our partners from governments, industry and science. A blueprint for mangrove restoration worldwide, using locally dredged material to create an economic advantage. We can not to wait to use this blueprint for large-scale mangrove restoration globally. • #BoostBiodiversity #MangroveRestoration #COP29 #EcoEngineering This project is financially supported by Vlaamse overheid and IUCN through the ‘Flanders International Climate Action Programme’, an initiative coordinated by G-STIC: Global Sustainable Technology & Innovation Community and Departement Omgeving. Big thank you to our partners: , Mantis Consulting; South Pole, HAEDES, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Universiteit Antwerpen, Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral, Fundacion Calisur.

HAEDES' Climate Proof Tool in action. Yesterday, HAEDES and De Vlaamse Waterweg nv facilitated the workshop “Climate Proof for Future Challenges: Building Climate-Resilient Infrastructures with a Climate Proof Tool” to the #GreenDeal learning network. The Climate Proof Tool was introduced to a multistakeholder setup (municipalities, cities, governments and consulting companies) using the Seine-Scheldt project as a case study. The 40 participants were invited to actively engage and co-create, weaving feedback, ideas, and recommendations into useful outputs for innovation. The Climate Proof Tool qualitatively evaluates climate resilience by addressing two key aspects: 1) examine project’s vulnerability to climate change impacts; 2) assess the risk of environmental impacts of the project such as floods, drought, heat island effect, or other hazards. Compliance and systemic thinking are a plus, as it calculates the carbon footprint of the infrastructure throughout its entire lifecycle. This is a breakthrough instrument to project developments in infrastructure, blue-green solutions, dredging works, etc. #climateproof #climatechange #floods #droughts

On October 4th HAEDES' ecosystem met in Flanders (Kalken) during our Client event. This was an initiative to do more than showcase; we devoted this event to appreciate, re-connect, and inspire. Appreciate because it started with a visit to our silent stakeholder, an invaluable part of our ecosystem and to which all of us depend on - nature. A walk to Kalkense Meersen, acknowledging the role of integrated water management and engineering practices to foster habitat quality and landscape conservation. A glimpse of the potential of harmonious developments in territories. Re-connect as we revisited past projects, ongoing challenges, and aspirations. An opportunity to rekindle our stakeholders why we do business the way we do it, advancing holistic solutions and meaningful applications on climate resilience and sustainable water systems, aquaculture, dredging, and blue growth in general. Re-connect to honour our joint endeavours. Inspire with a suggestive event theme: “witches”. Revisiting how deep connections to Nature were historically and locally tormented with pejorative premises, questioning if society lost the chance to further understand what sometimes is only believed and felt. Client event 2024, more than showcase: appreciate, reconnect, inspire. #inspire #nature #reconnect #celebrate

“Where were you all this time?” was the positive reaction we received during our first meeting with the BlueBio Alliance (BBA), confirming our membership is valued. For HAEDES, being a member of BlueBio Alliance (BBA) is a logical step. Portugal benefits from a fantastic geopolitical advantage, having an immense marine potential and vivid marine sector. Since a few years we are unfolding and exploring the potential of seaweed as Nature-based Solution and as a component to boost marine biodiversity. This is made possible thanks to projects like MARCOS, AQUABREAK, and the recently lauched I3-4-SEAWEED project. But we want to do more. To create systemic development we can adopt an attitude that favors the potential of creating a field of caring, co-creativity and co-responsibility. Going from shared challenges into shared developments. As a member of the BlueBio Alliance we take a new step in the interaction with a network of start-up’s, SME’s, research institutes and governmental entities to further unravel the potential of the blue bioeconomy. #partnerships #bleueconomy #seaweed #membership

New project, new start, new ideas. The combination between seaweed and technology does not seem evident. Not for us. In the I3-4-SEAWEED project, HAEDES will develop digital solutions for offshore aquaculture providing real time access to crucial met-ocean indicators, parameters that allow to assess the farm health status while facilitating planning of activities and operations. Last week we actively participated in the Kick-off of the I3-4-SEAWEED project, hosted by the Universidade de Coimbra. Together with 16 partners, we are committed to unfolding solutions to support the developments of the EU seaweed sector. Connecting people, ideas and solutions is what drives us. I3-4-SEAWEED offers the potential to cultivate this in an environment where creativity and imagination is valued. Together with the partners we will start assessing the seaweed farmers’ needs to initiate the development of a tailor-made tool. 📻 Stay tuned to engage with us in these developments!
