👉 Glass is a permanent material that retains its properties throughout its life cycle, regardless of how often it is recycled into new products. Choosing glass as a packaging material keeps valuable resources in the economy and reduces the need for new raw materials. Permanent materials are essential for a proven, well-functioning European circular economy. That is why the packaging industry is calling on the authorities to move beyond a waste-centred approach, adopt a resource-based perspective and fully implement EU legislation on the circular economy 📑 Read our Call-to-Action 2024, in collaboration with STEEL FOR PACKAGING EUROPE, EUROPEAN ALUMINIUM and Metal Packaging Europe (MPE): https://lnkd.in/ekZMhkU4

🚀Glass manufacturers have long been an important partner to a range of sectors – from food and beverages, to perfumery, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals – contributing to around €140 billion in EU exports in 2023. All in all, our footprint, along with the sectors we serve, accounts for an added value to the economy of almost 1% of EU GDP. 🌍To continue driving this value for Europe, authorities must address critical enabling conditions for low-carbon glass production. From decreasing the cost of grid connection to increasing financial support for glassmakers switching to renewable energy, public authorities play a critical role in helping us reach net zero emissions by 2050. ➡️ Find out how policymakers can help sustain the glass industry's path to decarbonisation: https://lnkd.in/eXpuNevF #Decarbonisation #GlassIndustry #NetZero

Achieving net-zero glass production means more than reimagining how glass is made—it’s about transforming the entire value chain to make glass packaging fit for Europe’s future. The container glass industry is advancing on this journey through four key pathways: 🏭 Furnaces of the Future: Cutting emissions by adopting hybrid or electric furnaces powered by renewable energy. ♻️ Closing the Glass Loop: Boosting the use of recycled glass (cullet) in production to reduce virgin raw material consumption, and enabling reuse when it is economically viable and environmentally sustainable. 🎨 Source & Design: Prioritising low-carbon raw materials and designing lighter, more efficient packaging. 🚛 Transport & Delivery: Optimising logistics to adopting alternative fuels and collaborating across the value chain to decarbonise delivery systems. As the glass industry advances its low-carbon journey, continued investment in new technologies and infrastructure is vital. For an industry so important to the EU’s international competitiveness – contributing to 5.7% of the EU’s total exports in 2023 thanks to products packed in glass - the glass sector plays a key role in supporting European brands. For progress to continue, we need enabling conditions from public authorities and continued trust by customers in place. 📑 "80% of consumers prefer glass packaging in the hospitality industry", according to the 'Consumer Preferences in Horeca' study conducted by Conecta for Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP). 📊 In Spain, #glass consumption in bars, restaurants and cafés has increased by 3.9% in the last year and over 87% of Coca-Cola's customers in the hospitality sector now opt for glass. Besides its sustainable credentials, glass consistently ranks first for protecting taste of a variety of products, from beer to soda. It keeps sodas safe and fresh for longer, and the unique designs and natural credentials of these bottles make for a better taste. 💎 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eKUfqbib

🤝 With today’s approval of new #PPWR standards, the European Parliament has formally approved new packaging rules that set a clear standard: all packaging must now be recycled. This ambitious legislation is a big step forward for the European circular economy goals. 🔎 As we progress to the implementation phase of the PPWR, it is critical to make sure that secondary legislation and standards are adopted in a timely manner to provide visibility and certainty to economic operators. They should support both environmental objectives and the practical needs of the packaging industry. Here's why it matters 👉 https://lnkd.in/eXSGbmBP
