I was delighted to join a panel in Brussels at the EFPIA - European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations ‘Imagine a healthier, more competitive Europe’ event to discuss how industry, policymakers and patient advocates can work together to ensure faster, more equitable access to medicines. It was a privilege to share the stage with fellow panellist, Minister for Health of the Republic of Latvia Hosams Abu Meri. We all agree on the diagnostic: access in Europe needs to be fixed. How? A few reflections: 1. Access can only happen if a favorable ecosystem for medicines is in place. Political will and multistakeholder dialogue are key to move the needle in the right direction. 2. The revision of the #EU General Pharma Legislation, along with the promised European Life Sciences Strategy, are opportunities to restore European competitiveness. 3. Europe should work towards ensuring continued investments in innovation, a workable EU HTA system, and an agile and future-proof regulatory framework When we work together, we can turn ambition into action to build a healthier, more competitive, and secure Europe. #WeWontRest #BMS_Employee

What happens if the antibiotics modern medicine relies on, no longer work? The threat of #AntimicrobialResistance (#AMR) is becoming better recognised and understood. But something less talked about is the potential impact of AMR on vulnerable people tackling another feared disease – cancer. One of the common effects of cancer treatment is a compromised immune system. As many as 1 in 5 cancer patients undergoing treatment are hospitalized due to bacterial infection.* It is vital we keep the power of anti-infective medicines alive for today’s cancer community and future patients. Something this video brings to life so powerfully. * Bratti VF et al. Protocol: Scoping review protocol on the impact of antimicrobial resistance on cancer management and outcomes. BMJ Open. 2023;13(1):e068122. Published 2023
Patients with cancer are nearly 3x more likely to die from an infection than the general population. Effective antibiotics are an essential part of their treatment. But what happens when these life-saving drugs stop working due to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)? AMR is a significant public health concern that threatens the lives of cancer patients worldwide. Watch the latest film in our Race Against Resistance series, produced in collaboration with BBC StoryWorks, to learn more about this emerging threat: https://lnkd.in/exV2n_yf"

Self-regulation plays a vital role in governing how pharmaceutical companies promote medicines, interact with health professionals and collaborate with the patient community. It is undoubtedly a privilege and one which requires accountability and commitment to high standards from the organisations and companies involved as well as significant investment. Through our proactive approach, we can continually improve and enforce standards and embed them throughout the sector, to deliver on our mission to help patients.
