We fund research & innovation projects advancing circular bio-based industries in Europe under EU’s Horizon Europe
About us
The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) that funds projects advancing competitive circular bio-based industries in Europe. CBE JU is operating under the rules of Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation programme, for the 2021-2031 period. The partnership is building on the success of its predecessor, the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU), while addressing the current challenges facing the industry. The CBE JU is the legal and universal successor of BBI JU in respect of all contracts, grant agreements and liabilities. The CBE JU’s objectives are ensuring a high level of bio-based industrial systems’ environmental performance, accelerating the development and market deployment of bio-based innovative solutions. CBE JU organises yearly calls for proposals supporting research and innovation, de-risking investments, addressing market challenges, placing sustainability at the heart of the projects, strengthening the collaboration of all bioeconomy actors and engaging with stakeholders along bio-based value chains.

🥇With over 10,000 views, topping the #CBEtop2024 ranking, we find the brand-new CBE JU-funded biorefinery in Spain that transforms urban waste into valuable bio-based ingredients 👇 A new era for the #circulareconomy begins with the inauguration of the CIRCULAR BIOCARBON #biorefinery in #Zaragoza, #Spain. Funded by CBE JU, this first-of-its-kind industrial facility will turn urban waste into high-value #biobased products, from green graphene to #sustainable #fertilisers. 🏙 Once the waste treatment complex is fully operational, the biorefinery will treat more than 300 million tonnes of waste per year, generated by around 1 million people. It’s a model for sustainable European cities, setting a new standard for resource efficiency and innovation. 🗨 As Nicoló Giacomuzzi-Moore, Executive Director of CBE JU, said: 'This game-changing biorefinery sets a new European standard for #circularity, creating local jobs, driving green growth, and saving regional resources.' 🗨 Natalia Chueca, Mayor of Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza, added: 'Zaragoza wants to be #climateneutral. This biorefinery will not only contribute to that goal but will also attract investments and economic activity to the city.' 🗨 Fernando Abril-Martorell Hernández, CEO of Urbaser, emphasised: 'Innovation is at the centre of this biorefinery. It helps reduce dependence on fossil resources and proves that the circular #bioeconomy is a reality that can be replicated in many cities.' 🗨 Jose Manuel GONZALEZ VICENTE, Spanish representative at the CBE JU states representatives’ group, highlighted: 'This project is a great example of public-private partnership, demonstrating the strength of CBE JU’s industry-led approach to bring innovative products to market.' 5️⃣ We start the top 5 of the #CBEtop2024 with this story about #biobased materials advanced by our projects that attracted 8,200 views 👇 We know that #wood is a key ingredient in everyday items like construction materials, furniture, packaging, and textiles. But what happens to the bark, which makes up 10-15% of a tree trunk? 🧪 Usually, the bark is just a by-product used for energy. But what if the CBE JU-funded SuperBark project could unlock bark’s potential and turn it into a valuable source of #biobased chemicals for high-quality products? Discover how SuperBark is transforming the future of #sustainable materials: https://lnkd.in/g-y_TN9v
