Together, we empower private sector development worldwide 🤝 A strong small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector is essential for sustainable economic growth and food security. By supporting SMEs in agriculture and food production, we help combat hunger, promote income growth, and foster sustainable farming practices. That is why we work with other countries to strengthen their private sectors, collaborating closely with Dutch and local companies and organizations to achieve these goals. Would you also like to use your knowledge or expertise to support the private sector in developing countries? Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of going back to the University of Geneva to teach a class on peasant mobilization and grievances, based on a chapter of my PhD dissertation. In this chapter, I studied the farming milieu’s mobilization against the pesticide-free initiatives in 2021 to add some layers and nuances to the discussion. In my class, I talked about the fact that.. 🔉 The farming milieu formulated economic AND societal grievances during the mobilization against the two “pesticide-free” initiatives in 2021. 🏠 That studying the broader meanings that are at stake can help understanding strong mobilization (Simmons 2016). In fact, I found that the farming milieu felt attacked in the broader meanings behind their grievances such as what it means to be a farmer (e.g. perpetuating family heritage). ...and with the class, we discussed the parallels to this year's peasant mobilization. Many thanks to Valentina Holecz for the invitation and to the class for their active participation. This allowed diving into a topic I am passionate about: the tensions that can arise between social justice and ecological questions…. I ended my class with three reflections around these important questions: 1. The importance of taking into account systemic lock-ins such as pesticide dependency, specific land ownership schemes etc. rather than delegating an unfair amount of the responsibility to individual consumers, producers etc. 2. The potential of coalitions around common interests and the need to foster mutual understandings, without necessarily having to agree on other aspects, specific values etc... 3. The need to promote a just transition which allows creating inclusive and participatory processes of ecological transition which aim at reducing inequalities and just outcomes. (for more on just transition in Switzerland, follow our work at sanu durabilitas)
