About us

Airlines for Europe (A4E) is Europe’s largest airline association, based in Brussels. A4E works with policymakers to ensure aviation policy continues to connect Europeans with the world in a safe, competitive and sustainable manner. As a key initiator of aviation's Destination 2050 roadmap, A4E and its members committed to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions for their own operations by 2050. With a modern fleet of over 3,600 aircraft, A4E airlines carried over 718 million passengers in 2023. Each year, A4E members with air cargo and mail activities transport more than 5 million tons of goods, life-saving vaccines and essential medical equipment to more than 360 destinations either by freighters or passenger aircraft.

Updates

  • As Poland takes on the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union Union, Airlines for Europe (A4E) extends its warmest welcome and looks forward to working together to address the key challenges and opportunities ahead for Europe’s aviation sector. Our key priorities include: 🔹 Reforming Europe’s airspace to increase capacity, reduce emissions, and modernize air traffic management. 🔹 Accelerating the production and adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) to support decarbonization efforts. 🔹 Completing the Single Aviation Market, ensuring transparency and clarity in passenger rights, multimodality, and airport regulations. Together, we can make meaningful progress for the 450 million European citizens who rely on air travel. #FlyingForOurFuture #PolishPresidency #EU #Aviation #Sustainability

Consumentenbond, the Dutch consumer organization, published yesterday the findings of a recently completed study looking at the prices of airline tickets on #OnlineTravelAgents (OTAs) websites and found them to be “unnecessarily expensive”. The results were quite telling: 📈 The cost of ancillary services such as seat reservations and baggage are “through the roof” – up to four times more expensive than when booking directly on an #airline website. 🔎 The study also noted that additional costs are often not displayed transparently. #Consumers may see “reasonable” upfront ticket prices but later face substantial mark-ups for optional services. 💵 Some OTAs charge for services that airlines offer for free, such as online check-in. OTAs sometimes also force passengers to book a new ticket in case of a typo in a #passenger name, while airlines are obliged to help passengers with a name correction and may not charge for this service. Such opaque practices can be detrimental for passengers. From an #EU #policy perspective, it’s clear that: 1. The new passenger rights proposals must place more obligations and ensure transparency from OTAs. 2. Content sharing between airlines and OTAs must remain voluntary, to ensure airlines can choose partners among intermediaries that meet their standards in terms of passenger rights. This is particularly important in light of ongoing policy debates around multimodal transport and the #DigitalMarketsAct (#DMA) where OTAs have been playing an important role. • Pragmatism has prevailed. A phased approach is the right way forward to thoroughly test the system and make sure it functions under the combined input of all Member States and all border crossing points, be they road, rail, sea or air.   A4E continues to work with EU regulators on the details of this phased approach and our member airlines continue to liaise with authorities and partners nationally to ensure a smooth transition for air travel.   #EES #Aviation #Travel #BorderManagement

  • Earlier today, Airlines for Europe (A4E) joined nine leading European travel and tourism organisations for a landmark meeting in the European Parliament. Hosted by Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas and MEP Daniel Attard, with participation from other Members of the Tourism Task Force, European Commission officials, and EU Member States representatives, the dialogue reaffirmed our collective commitment to a sustainable and resilient future for the sector. Building on the momentum of the Joint Declaration EU Tourism: Resilience in the Climate Crisis Era signed in Rhodes earlier this year, discussions focused on: 🔹 Delivering a Sustainable Tourism Strategy to drive decarbonisation and resilience. 🔹 Simplifying compliance processes and improving access to EU funding. 🔹 Aligning sustainability with competitiveness to ensure long-term growth. During the event, Commissioner Tzitzikostas highlighted the pivotal role of tourism in Europe’s economy and pledged to support the sector in addressing climate challenges. Complementing this, MEP Attard emphasized the importance of ensuring competitiveness remains central to these efforts, noting that “economic growth and sustainability can and must go hand in hand.” As Airlines, we are proud to have contributed to this important dialogue. We remain dedicated to fostering collaboration with policymakers and industry leaders to deliver tangible results for European aviation and tourism, charting a more sustainable and resilient future. ✈️ Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/gzgdvtru #SustainableTourism #EUTransport HOTREC - Hotels, Restaurants & Cafés in Europe ACI EUROPE CLIA in Europe ECTAA European Exhibition Industry Alliance European Regions Airline Association IAAPA IRU RURALTOUR

  • Eighty years ago today, a meeting took place in Chicago which produced a document that is the starting point for flying as we know it today. The Chicago Convention gave birth to the International Civil Aviation Organization which spurned global commercial aviation and connected the world in ways that could scarcely have been imagined in 1944. In Europe alone in 2023 there were: 🛫 7.9 million commercial flights 👥 988 million passengers who connected across Europe and with the rest of the world In Europe aviation generates: 💹nearly 3 millions direct jobs 📈over €260 billion in GDP Aviation has become crucial for moving people, goods and services across Europe and the rest of the world. At A4E we'll continue to work for an airline industry that is connected, competitive and more sustainable.

  • The new European Commission has just been approved by the European Parliament and will take office at the beginning of next month. Expectations are high for concrete action over the next five years. A4E's message to policymakers remains clear: let’s get down to business and work for a connected, competitive, and more sustainable airline industry in Europe. • ✈️ Aviation is often seen as a "hard-to-abate" sector— meaning that it is not easy to decarbonise. This is mainly due to the massive amounts of energy required to get tonnes and tonnes worth of aircraft into the air. But decarbonising aviation isn't impossible! Why? Because all players in the sector are determined to get there and are turning words into concrete actions.🌍 A4E, alongside ACI EUROPE, CANSO, Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD), and the European Regions Airline Association, has set out a roadmap containing measures to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through the Destination 2050 Alliance. This week, we also called on policymakers to include aviation in the Clean Industrial Deal. This will be an important early priority for the next European Commission—and essential for aviation's green transition. You can find out more details in the comments. 🚀 You can also check out one of our latest videos, where A4E’s Communications Director Kevin Hiney explains how policymakers can help accelerate aviation's decarbonisation journey by including it in the Clean Industrial Deal 🎥 #Sustainability #NetZero2050 #FlyingForOurFuture

  • At A4E we're proud to have joined with the wider aviation industry in Europe to set out a roadmap to reach Net Zero carbon emissions. The roadmap, known as Destination 2050 contains a number of measures that will result in meaningful carbon emission reductions. In our latest video, our Managing Director Ourania Georgoutsakou explains what Destination 2050 is, what the four key measures behind it and how they are going to get us to Net Zero by 2050. EU and member state policy makers have a key role to play in helping us along our way and aviation needs to be a key part of initiatives like the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (STIP) and Clean Industrial Deal.  #sustainability  #airlines  #NetZero  #FlyingForOurFuture
